Tonights training

Squats
10 x bar
5 x 60 kg
5 x 100 kg
Belt on
5 x 140 kg
3 x 3 x 155 kg
2 x 2 x 155 kg

Rope crunches, SLDL's, calf raises

The plan was 5 x 3 at 155 so I was a bit dissappointed at first but looking back through my journal my previous best 5 x 3 was at 140, so not too bad really.
Stick with the same weight next time for triples.

Tonights training

Flat BBBP
10 x bar
5 x 60 kg
5 x 100 kg
5 x 1 x 125 kg

Hammer Strength Incline BP
5 x 120 kg
3 x 5 x 140 kg
4 x 140 kg
3 x 140 kg

Dips
5 x 3 BW + 40 kg

First 125 was tough but they got easier, move onto 127.5 for next 5 x 1 but put in a warm up triple at 115.

5 x 60 kg
5 x 100 kg
5 x 140 kg
5 x 5 x 155 kg

Hard but good, surprising given my sh!t diet today.
Move on to 160 for 5 x 5.

Tonights training

Seated DB Press
5 x 50 lb
5 x 60 lb
5 x 70 lb
5 x 80 lb

Push Press
3 x 60 kg
3 x 70 kg
5 x 1 x 80 kg

Shrugs, lat raises, rope crunches

Strength was there to press the 90's but they were too painful on the elbows to get into position.

All in all a decent weeks training.

Tonights training

Squats
10 x bar
5 x 60 kg
5 x 100 kg
5 x 140 kg
3 x 155 kg
3 x 1 x 170 kg
1 x 170 kg (f)

Calf raises, SLDLs, rope crunches

The plan was 5 singles at 170, I got 2 good ones, 1 **** one and didn't get back up on the 4th.
I've not done a 'proper' 5 x 1 before and I might have started too heavy but I'll stick with 170 for next time.
Warm up sets were good.

Poor session tonight, failed at the 4th rep on the push press because of the pain in my right elbow.
My 16 yr old came training with me tonight, a bit of a distraction from my own training but we both enjoyed it.

Hamstrings are much improved and deadlifting has resumed thanks mate, I'm going to do some singles on Thursday so that will push things a bit more.

The plan is to qualify at either the South Yorkshire or the North Midlands in May or June but I really want to get in 6 months of uninterrupted training before then.
All being well I'll see you in Birmingham.

Standing Press Machine
5 x 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 plates
3 x 10 plates

Lat raises, shrugs, rope crunches

The standing press is like a poor mans viking log press but it's a good pressing angle and doesn't aggravate my elbows/forearms.

5 x 100 kg
5 x 140 kg
1 x 155 kg (see below)
5 x 3 x 155 kg

SLDL's, calf raises, rope crunches

Split yet another pair of tracky bottoms when squatting, they had given me a few warnings recently but the recent weight gain was the final straw.
Squats were ok but could have been better, easily a PB for 5 x 3, move onto 160 for triples.

Quick session tonight, had things on.
Bench was poor, I've managed so far without a spotter but I'm at the point where it's difficult to un-rack it myself, press it and re-rack it. I'll move onto 130 for 5 x 1 but I need to sort out a spotter.

I'm just waiting for the divisions to sort out their comps now mate and I'll decide what I'm doing.
Unless I'm badly injured I should see you in Birmingham.

I've seen a comp announced for GBPF on Sugden though that's well worth looking at, an un-equipped bench and dead in February.

Hiya mate. Hope things are well with you.

A question if I may, coming off the booze, how did you deal with social situations? Being that Chrimbo is around the corner and I am going to find myself in situations where everyone is smashed (eg this Saturday for the football and out after with my missus), I am very apprehensive indeed. How did you manage to cope mate?

Cheers

Re:The 40 Plus Journal Part 2 - The Search For Strength - 13 December 2009 13:37
I'll be completely honest with you mate, I did my best to avoid them.
I stopped drinking on New Years Day so there weren't too many social events immediately after to be fair. By the time the next Christmas came around I'd been off it for nearly a year and so found it a bit easier, though definitely not easy.
Nowadays I find it quite easy to go out to a party or a club and have diet coke all night even if the missus has a drink but there are still plenty of times when I do fancy a drink.
I was at a party in a Nottingham club 2 weeks ago and was quite happy drinking coke all night while the missus and her mate and her mates husband had a few drinks. He'd had quite a few and managed to fall flat on his arse and damage his wrist on the way back to the car - I don't miss that.

It is a bit of a trek but most comps are for me mate to be honest.
The closest one to me is the South Yorkshire but that's not my division.
I did promise myself 6 - 7 months of un-interupted training barring injury but I'll certainly give it some serious thought.

Tonights training

Flat BBBP
10 x bar
5 x 60 kg
5 x 100 kg
3 x 3 x 117.5 kg
1 x 2 x 117.5 kg
1 x 3 x 117.5 kg
1 x 2 x 117.5 kg

Tonight was supposed to be squats for 5 x 5 x 150 but I've had a stabbing pain in what seems to be the ligament area below my left knee cap since Saturday morning. I thought it might have cleared by now but it hasn't and the pain causes my left leg to buckle at times, particularly when going up stairs or kerbs and also when pressing the clutch down in the car.
I've no idea what's caused it as last weeks squats and deads gave no indication that anything was wrong.
I was going to take at least a week over Christmas off from training any way as I really do need a break but I have to admit this latest injury has got me wondering if PL is the way forward for me.
