Money gone, i think its time for me to call it a day or actually learn how to trade first

I'd do some more research and learn up a bit before you actually part with any real money - you'd be better off out partying with the cash than losing it trading.

everytime i look in here im baffled!  have only ever traded shares once, on a tip from someone that worked at the company.

i bought a thousand pounds of shares for a few pence each, sold a few months later when it had doubled.

it got to over 200 a few years ago, oh how i wish i had waited.....  lol

Yeah i suppose it would be better off in a savings account it, tbh in a mad kind of way its probably good that i lost this £700... If i had done well at 1st i would of been tempted to bung everything ive got on a trade and probably would of lost it and then hung myself lol. At least its not the end of the world but needless to say im pissed off but fcuk it. Drawing the line.

You have gone about this far too casually. When I started working- EM fixed income- I had to go through quite a long training process before I was given my first book, and even then it was small! 

Get out now before you lose any more. Do a bit of studying and decide if you want to come back to it in the future.

Little Share tip for you longer term investors. HMV seen a few reports and its had its rating upgraded and price target doubled with a view to monopolising the high street music business and online, rumours are it will be taken over so fill your boots. I bought at 76p PT ranges between 150-190p pity I dont have the capital behind me or would have bought as opposed to placing a spread bet still rose sharply friday took a nice 10pts of it :D.

Not a bad call.  Marked down by the market to almost bankrupt levels, so a lot of people don't think they will survive.  Very much a turnaround punt and a cracking dividend to keep you warm while you wait, assuming they can keep it up.

Retail isn't really my thing, but they could be worth a dable.

This seems of interest to me... What benefits would i have investing in HMV shares?

You get paid a div though not massive. You would own the asset so could run it for longer as opposed to a spreadbet where you dont actually own it. Think they hit 90 today so still good value imo iv got a long running spreadbet on them @ £10 a point got in at 76 lol.

If your still spread betting blue and can get a decent price on the FTSE I see it hitting 5850 tomorrow because its options expiry and that usually bumps it up a bit.

Blue WTF are you playing at? What did you punt and how if you had bought the FTSE this morning could have had it for 5800 ish then took 37 points off when the expiry happend. What did you punt on?

China is interesting at the moment too. Growth is phenominal.

Earlier today i backed it £25 a point to go down, i got locked out at 11 points :/

lol, shorting a bull market is not ever going to go well.

Your doing this wrong Blue 11 pts on the ftse (im assuming) is about 0.1% of the index one stock can move it by that much if your going to try the indices only look for things that yield 30+ points also dont go above more than £5 a point because they fluctuate wildly not uncommon for 100 pt swings espeically around annoucement time. Great if your on the right side of it bad if your on the wrong side.

How much have you lost in total now then? You need to be more careful because atm your gambling as opposed to making an informed decision. At what point did you place your down bet?

I had a tidy amount on MNR in March last year at 10p. sold then rebought again a few times and finally cashed in at 28p.


It recently hit 126p! Buying and holding would have yielded me enough to chill out for a few years. 


Soon enough most will realise that spreadbetting is a zero sum game... to spend your time obsessing over fluctuations in the market for what is essentially beer money when you are better off doing something else.


Alas, you could be privy to some inside information and stake a whole lot more which may/may not net you a windfall and will make a difference to your life for better or worse.

HMV is interesting, everything else on the high street is falling on it's arse, could see that tactic working.

For mid to long term investment I'd just stick my cash in Apple- look at their consistent growth, about 125% this year FFS!! Their growth looked pretty exponential, recession hit, it went down, now looking exponential again...

No spare cash to put in though

I bought this sucker at 87p on the way down... saw it hit 69p and now it's back to my breakeven. Sigh...


Well at least there's divi in it (but then so was Woolies).


HMV is interesting, it has a lack of competition on the high street and is now very heavily diversified, just take a look inside! It might have to get rid of Waterstone's at some point and shore itself up. It's competition is from the net... but as far as I can see the central London stores are doing very well from footfall custom, however, I can also see it trying to do too much (books, T-shirts, books, just taken over MAMA). Bit confused from it's business model, but perhaps they are on to something... I'm a **** analyst as you can see.
And whilst it's relatively cheap, we are hearing of bid rumours. Let's see if anything will materialise.


The HMV store turned a good profit last year, but has been heavily shorted the past few months. So, once the shorters close we should be able to see a bounce back for those Technical Wallahs.
