My understanding of black markets is an area where you buy items that are illegal or restricted such as conflict diamonds drugs arms etc. Maybe im missing the point not someithing i would want to invest in personally unless there were good gains. Wheels what do you do are you a banker ? Ras

And no, I'm not a banker, just a part-time investor/trader. My main work is engineering.

Banks may still be worth buying - I am looking at some atm purely based on their dividend yield (assuming the dividend holds) some are over 30% atm. Some REIT's maybe interesting on the same basis but a risky punt. Real Estate Investment Trust - REIT. I would imo if not day trading look for high yielding dividend stocks where a share rise is an added bonus.

Bank dividends will be under threat from the govt, I can see them being cut almost completely for a couple of years for the bailed out banks. Agree fully with the yeild play, telcos's are looking nice too me as a long term buy.

One of the Irish banks already cut it's dividend by 50% but because of the depressed share price the yield has doubled to near 20%. The ADR (American Depository Receipt) for the same bank has a yield over 40% atm.

Sorry if it seems obvious but the guys at work, (RBS), say they won't be receiving any dividend payments from their shares. I'm really tempted to go and buy some RBS shares outside of the company scheme at the moment, just a case of seeing what is the best price I can get em for! We've opened up 20 times more ISA's and savings accounts than estimated during the last 3 months so hopefully that may have a bearing on prices when they release official figures in a few weeks!
I'm here to attain not maintain

If I had some money I would have a look at a few banking stocks. Compnaies that have made that much profit may not be a bad investment although you can obviously raise an eyebrow where alot of it came from.

where's the bottom going to be? that's the thing like someone has said this could be a very rare buying opportunity, especially for long term gains, sectors like mining and natural resources seem to have been hit hard (check out aquarius platinum/ rio tinto etc.) still could be a good market for shorting as well, the fluctuations at the moment in th index as a whole are massive and a lot of shares seems to be bobbing with the tide
I wish I was more attractive like Dagless.

Mining & Natural Resources are well down as everything is - TransOcean (RIG) is another one. Who knows where the bottom will be - thing is not to be too greedy imo.

the market is in a terrible state, who knows where the bottom is, considering we have more than retraced 50% of the stock gins since Black Monday back in the late 80's we are setting into new territory here, the only thing that can compare is the great depression and no one knows what happened there in any great detail. The difference now to then is technology. People are so highly plugged in across the world that any reaction to an event, headline, eco number or anything can set the market spinning. Today the S&P lost another 90 points, it's an incredible phenominon , but it's happening. I'm a prop trader so i can invest or day trade, but the movements in the market are so severe and there is no rhyme or reason to some of the moves really, so i feel like shutting down my book and sitting it all out until the market stabilises properly and trading normalises. any traders who work in the City on here?

I work for a German bank so i use firm money. It's very difficult at the moment. I trade credit, most credit derivatives and bonds. The liquidity in the market is very thin and bid offer spreads are so expensive at the moment that i makes it very difficult to cut positions that you know are money good in the long term...I seriously thought that post the capital injections and bailout packages the market would stabilise, guess not, it's seriously getting very critical now. It feels like we are standing on the edge of the obvilion and peering over the edge. A complete collapse of the financial system will send us back into the stone ages.

Early rally today folks. I was trying to call this yesterday evening and got caned. Had I used cmc for the trade I'd have been stopped out overnight but paddypower don't action stops out of hours so it ran to the tune of £3k paper loss at it's worst. Luckily the wave looks to be in place. £400 paper profit atm. Stop now set at b/e I learned another good lesson last night. Tighter stops required when you are trading against the general trend.
