Tightness behind knee/swelling HELP NEEDED!!

I'm hoping someone maybe able to help me or at least point me in the right direction of someone who can: About 3/4 years ago I started to feel some tightness behind my left knee, some swelling then followed around the knee. Once this went down the other knee would do the same thing and so on and so on! Basically this went on for a good 9 months when it just stopped happening. I had no prior impact or injury to explain it. During this time I had an mri scan which revealed no problems (by then the problem had near enough disappeared though) I visited a physio on the NHS who just gave me some stretching exercises etc, the usual, no one could give me an explanation resulting in my doctor saying, and I quote "sometimes in medical we don't have the answers"!! Anyhow, roll on 3 to 4 years and suddenly out of nowhere the problem is back! Tightness in the back of the left knee followed by swelling (to the point sometimes where I can't bend the knee down fully). Now my right knee has started up again, it's all very strange and I'm not doing ANYTHING any different. There is no pain with it (apart frrom the tightness) or strength loss. Now, stretching the hamstring of the left knee relieves the tightness behind the knee but after sitting for a while it comes back. Stretching of the right hamstring doesn't seem to do much but as I've discovered today, giving it a good rub at the back of my knee relieves it. But again after sitting the problem comes back, I'm now getting some swelling on my right knee. If I kneel down far I have real trouble straightening my leg out again. At a bit of a loss with it, obviously the GP can't do nothing for me so I was wondering if anyone on here as any advice? Training: I do squats and deadlifts every Sunday, 3 x 6 of each (with 2 warm up sets each). When I first had this problem I stopped doing the squats and deads, but I've found that training actually makes them feel better! in fact, if I miss a Sunday session it seems the problem gets worse. Any ideas? I'm thinking tight hamstrings but why would it disappear for 3/4 years and suddenly come back as quick as it went, also I can't find anything linking tight hamstrings with swelling. Cheers
