Sat around but not static and without  significant hip flexion and shoulder protraction, but then the original arguments still remains.

Evlution is good but not complete and may not even fully apply
There's no reason not to.

Doh, was typing as you posted Drew!! I did say n=1 !!!

Funnily, last I heard living in a cave is better for health then living in a house - no build up of aerosols/mites/dust/etc - read an article on that years back

Agree, I guess we are pushing beyond our original training requirements. Hmmmmm. God, is it just me being a lazy cnut, not wanting to spend more time out of the house then I already am??I just don't see there being a rationale for the body responding better to a scenario it was never designed to have to deal/bother with? Sends gut feeling off into the corner, lol!

Glad you caveated with 'may' in the injury bit

like 3 sets of ten and push/pull/legs?

they would probably have had only a small chance of making it much past their 30's as well. and i remember being able to get away with pretty much anything when i was 20!

That perception is based on the earlier work on bone thicknesses etc comparing development to our skeletons now (19th&20thC) and is a little outdated. Life short and brutal, yes to a certain extent depending on where you lived, but observations now and also new ways of looking at the archaeological evidence kind of go against that idea. I'll dig some examples out if you;re interested.
dazc
and whos to say that they didnt suffer a multitude of health problems?  there is an assumption that the lifestyle was better and healthier, but i think there is a good case to be built for that not necissarily being the case!

I am sure they did but the problems you don;t see (either by looking at the remains which can tell you a LOT) or by observation of hunter-gatherer tribes are exactly the ones we face today.

Modern medicine is great att the acute stuff, crap with the chronic. It is the acute that seemed to have killed (I got run over by dinner, I am dinner, I fell out of a tree etc) and the chronic (NIDDM CVD etc) that seem to be very rare in HG's.

It's an interesting subject.

It is a very interesting subject, anything you have mate would make good reading im sure!

I think where we came from has some good relevance to today, although i think it can be overplayed a little in some sectors.  We have evolved quite quickly, and certainly that process is still taking place (though im not sure wether its any longer a positive thing...).  So while how our ancestors were holds some good keys to things, i dont think its the complete answer, because of the changes that have take place in the meantime.  I guess the bone thickness comparisons you mention would be just one example of changes in physicality taking place over a relatively short time.  A very recent example of another such change, and one still happening, would be height.

And i also think we are becoming much more 'fragile' as a species as well, because out perception of physical attraction has been changed through social development and interaction.

This would make a really good topic in its own right, might be worth starting one!

Bloody hell, you guys keep posting whilst I try to squeeze one in, lol!!!

Hah, yes, true about the sets Drew - though arguably a BBer physique can be gained by those doing explosive bodyweight movements, i.e. gymnasts, which is akin to what we would have done in the main.

Nice link, just from the abstract asks a lot of questions on the old nature/nurture issues - also with regard to phenotype, as fundamentally we're all pretty genetically similar, a little different here and there (if we were too different we couldn't breed), but the differences seen in life are profound.

Daz - iso stuff is intriguing, though its not good for gaining, is it? Thought only had strength implications? Man, this has actually highlighted just how out of touch I've let myself get with physiology over the years!!!

isokinetic, not isometric tony!  the isokinetic machines just measure force at a given constant angular velocity.

Forgot to update yesterday - weekly weigh in - 90.5kg - so lost a lb, lmao!

Saturdays training:
Barbell Deadlift                   140kg x 8, 140kg x 6, 140kg x 5
Chin-Up                               32
Cable Seated Row              52.5kg x 10, 52.5kg x 10, 52.5kg x 10
Reverse peck dec                60kg x 10, 60kg x 10, 60kg x 10
Seated pull down                100kg x 6, 80kg x 10, 80kg x 10
Barbell Bent Over Row        80kg x 10, 80kg x 10, 80kg x 4
Dumbbell Bicep Curl            17.5kg x 10, 17.5kg x 7, 15kg x 10
Dumbbell Bench Press        20kg x 43
Ergo                                   35 seconds - oops, 5 seconds down!

Barbell Deadlift - legs still weren't mega happy from squatting, and grip was lame! Felt like they should be fine going forwards

Chin-Up - fine, bit more tiring then they should have been

Cable Seated Row - did these slow, but not as slow as last time, last set was a muller

Reverse peck dec - these were fine, but I don't think more weight is appropriate yet, concentrate on movement

Seated pull down - poor... will be back next time!

Barbell Bent Over Row - 10kg up on last time, a LOT harder... some iffy reps, will improve next time also

Dumbbell Bicep Curl - arms were pumped beyond words so these were a bit fail ridden, but ok, good form throughout, and nice tempo

Dumbbell Bench Press - these felt good

Last nights training:
Barbell Squat            120kg x 8, 100kg x 10, 80kg x 12
Stiff Leg DL                80kg x 10, 80kg x 10, 80kg x 10
Lying Leg Curls          35kg x 5, 30kg x 9, 25kg x 10
Dumbbell Lunges       35kg x 8, 30kg x 10, 25kg x 12
Leg Extensions          75kg x 8, 67.5kg x 9, 60kg x 12
Calves                        James' 3 minute
Seated pull down       40kg x 45
Ergo                            42 seconeds - woot, an increase!

Barbell Squat - these felt good!!! Much easier than last week, and better quality to them, Legs burning afterwards

Stiff Leg DL - played around with ROM to try and keep the load on hammies, probably looked bad to bystanders..

Lying Leg Curls - better than last week, very tough front loading the weight on these

Dumbbell Lunges - miles better than last week, few dodgy reps on the 35s so won't be moving that up

Leg Extensions - ow, ow, ow, ow

Calves - fine this week

Seated pull down - pissed through these, all full reps with extra squeeze, got back hurting for a change!

Off down to London tomorrow for 5 days or something with work, will try to use the hotel gym as best I can. Diet will be all over the shop, that said, have eaten 4 pizzas in last 2 days here, so might be an improvement!!

Re:Tony on the road to NPA Mike Williams Classic 2012 2012/04/04 13:25:39 (permalink)
Ok, so did 1 x 20 minute session down in London, gym was ****e beyond words, basically a multigym and some DBs (all the way ip to 10kg...). Just did a full body to try and get some pump, but was uninspired, so only went once. Plus drank WAY too much to go more than once in the end, lol!

Since then... not great Was ill all last week, so only just got round to training again last night:

Barbell Squat*        130kg x 8, 110kg x 10, 90kg x 12
Stiff Leg DL*            90kg x 10, 90kg x 10, 90kg x 7
Lying Leg Curls*      35kg x 8, 30kg x 10, 25kg x 12
Leg Extensions*      82.5kg x 8, 75kg x 10, 67.5kg x 10
Calves                  James' 3 minutes
Ergo*                     47 seconds 'til failure, woop!

*PBs

Barbell Squat    - +10kg on last session all round, felt good. First heavy set was a little higher than it should have been, but was beaming sweat by the end of these! Left knee tendon wasn't happy by end, so skipped lunges (noted as PBs as though not 160kg as I have done, these were actually going near the floor, lol!)

Stiff Leg DL     - +10kg on last session, kept these focussed more on hammies/glutes - i.e. did not extend fully by a good margin. This felt great, really burned them out

Lying Leg Curls   - Haven't managed to hit that before, happy!

Leg Extensions   - +7.5kg all round, didn't fully hit the last set, but damn close. I'm shockingly near full rack on these now, and my form is in check - pad a bit over ankle on shin, arse pulled down tightly to the chair, no bouncing/dropping - all good

Calves - as normal

Ergo - felt good, only lasted a teeny bit longer, but felt a lot easier until I hit the wall!

Will hit chest tonight I think - off to wales tomorrow (!!) for a long weekend, so won't be training again until next monday, at which point I PROMISE consistency will return...

Re:Tony on the road to NPA Mike Williams Classic 2012 2012/04/17 09:50:39 (permalink)
Well consistency didn't return. Nope, instead my AS flared up a bit, regardless I did legs last week - squats went well, started on some SLDL - 3 rep it felt like I'd torn an errector or something... so back was ****ed all of last week, yey!!!

Got back there last night though, did chest as follows:

Dumbbell Bench Press                       27.5kg x 12, 32.5kg x 10, 37.5kg x 5
Dumbbell Fly                                      17.5kg x 12, 20kg x 10, 22.5kg x 7
Standing Military Press                      35kg x 12, 40kg x 8
Cable Standing Triceps Extension      45kg x 12, 52.5kg x 10, 60kg x 7
Seated Triceps Press                          20kg x 12, 25kg x 10, 30kg x 6
Dumbbell Incline Fly                           12.5kg x 12, 15kg x 10, 17.5kg x 5
Ergo                                                   46 second sub 1.30

Dumbbell Bench Press  - these were good, was trying to fix my shoulder blades as advised by someone on another forum, did focus things better on the pecs, so happy with that

Dumbbell Fly - good and strong, focussed more on opening up, again felt good

Standing Military Press  - back started to say no, so I ditched this quick smart!

Cable Standing Triceps Extension - thought I was going to coast through, but last couple of reps on 60 killed me, lol!

Seated Triceps Press - as above, sudden wall from no-where

Dumbbell Incline Fly - these felt better then usual - typically I'd do cable jungle before tricep work, but it was busy all night, so I think I just had more energy left in that movement then normal

All in all I was pretty happy with it, great to be in there again.

Have been thinking about what to do with my split going forwards, and I'm just going to adjust slightly, rather than have sat/sun off, the aim will be just train every other day, keeping rotation of bodyparts the same. Come start of June when I need to start dieting aim will be to keep kcal intake as high as poss, and just burn more through.

Oh, weight at the minute 90kg on the nose, will see if I can coak that up a bit over the next 6 weeks before hammering it down.... scary that the diet is now so close!

Re:Tony on the road to NPA Mike Williams Classic 2012 2012/04/19 10:48:23 (permalink)
Ok, some more training - decided to 'blend' back & bicep day with legs day, but eliminating any that put stress on my lower back (i.e. weight going on to spine) so that I wouldn't make it angry, the result:

Chin-Up                                       39
Lying Leg Curls                           35kg x 8, 30kg x 10, 25kg x 12
Seated pull down                       100kg x 10, 80kg x 10, 80kg x 7
Leg Extensions                           82.5kg x 8, 75kg x 10, 67.5kg x 11
Reverse peck dec                       67.5kg x 10, 67.5kg x 10, 60kg x 10
Seated calf raise                        James' 3 minute
Preacher bench machine curls    20.0kg x 10, 10.0kg x 10, 0.0kg x 10

Chin-Up - Really squeezed shoulder bladesin tight to load upper back as much as poss, worked well, will continue like that

Lying Leg Curls  - matched PB from last time, without the squats & SLDL prior these were kinda easy

Seated pull down - ok, but not great, kept pace slow

Leg Extensions - ouch, lol! Yeah, with no warm up these really got my quads sore quick!! Just didn't have last rep on 67.5, nothing in me...

Reverse peck dec - new PB +7.5kg, had to drop for last set, but felt good

Seated calf raise - mother of god seated hurts more than standing!!! Think I might swap, these were cramp city!

Preacher bench machine curls - these were fun, not done preacher bench in about a decade, was repping absurdly slow, about 3-4 seconds up & down, bi's were exploding by the end even with no weight on the thing

All in all felt like a nice workout, not as savage as either back or legs day normally is, as missing the big ass squats or deadlifts, but felt very effective with good pumps all round.

Nice protein shake + pizza & chips for tea, had carvery for lunch yesterday too, think I'll grab another one today
