Re:Tooth Extraction or Root Canal?

Had that same option presented to me last week as I had an abscess. Got it pulled no question...I hate the idea of a root canal and a dead frankentooth in my mouth (root canals can cause their own problems just like extractions). I'd rather have it pulled then have a rock solid implant at a later date for any structural issues. That said it is obv best to keep as many teeth as possible due to the issues with facial structure and tooth support. Had a wisdom tooth out this morning and another one thurs. 3 teeth in 8 days lol

mickeysingha Tony Barnes Root canal every time. Removing a tooth should be an absolute last resort. This is true Jess works in dentistry, so I am pretty aware of the long term issues that come from tooth removal. Short term - yeah, great, tooth/pain is gone, all is dandy. Long term it weakens the neighbouring teeth/increases their likelihood to rot Not true, if fact by removing a decayed tooth it is easy to clean the remaining teeth , causes mobility issues in opposite teeth (again not the case , the teeth do not become mobile but opposing teeth can over-erupt , and also your jaw bone weakens. by losing the tooth and the ligaments there is some bone loss but it does not weaken the bone Heard some real horror stories over the years.... So just for the sake of repetition, root canal every time. Removing a tooth should be an absolute last resort. 1. Decay - the face proximal to the removed tooth will obviously be easier to clean, however the ones left will tend to start to tilt towards the gap that is left, closing off/changing the accessibility to their other faces - i.e. making harder to clean 2. That is what I meant, perhaps should have been clearer 3. Bone loss that doesn't weaken bone? Ok... The crux is your mouth is designed to have teeth in it. They are not individual in the way they work, they influence their neighbours, and their opposite teeth. The loss of a tooth is far less prefferable to the saving of a tooth.

lol - I'll still argue the toss with him Nah, if he is, and what he's saying is true, then fair does - I'm only going from what I've heard from folk in the field over the last 5 years. Though I'd have thought it is unlikely that they are wrong, it is not impossible. Personally I'd still keep my teeth!!

I had 5 root canals, none of them worked. was waste of money probably spent up to a grand. had both the teeth ripped out in the end. the last tim it happened the dentist tried to fuk with it when it wasnt numb, i took him this, whn he proded it i screaed and nearly bite his fingers off. the last one didnt work i went to hospital to get it ripped out. then i refused to pay .. now 800 down. he drinks with my ol man down the pub and my old man paid cos he said he was embarrased. its a fkin con they hardly ever work.

dementia I have had five root canals, and cant see what your worried about. No different to a conventional filling just takes longer. I'd agree I've had a few and not noticed any real difference I have the same problem at the moment, had an absess and got anti biotics, my dentist said as it was a molar it would be better to get root canal done by specialist as there is a risk it may not work if he did it, but didnt tell me the specialist obviously wanted a new penis extension sports car as he quoted £750!! I left it and a fortnight ago it flared up again, face swollen serious pain that kept me awake for two nights, so got more antibiotics from an emergency dentist, and will now be popping back to my dentist to have a go at him doing the root canal filling, if it doesnt work then I'll have it out I also have two broken teeth, both broke within the last week, infact one this afternoon so it may be a bit pricey this next visit, but I'd opt for root canal first on these two if required

Cheers for all your input, there was definitely a mixed bag. i am having it extracted and it is tomorrow at 3 - hopefully it will go smoothly. not looking forward to soup etc for the next couple of days. im aiming to ge tback in the gym on the saturday, but will only be doing light weights - i'll obviously check with the dentist first to see if this is ok

No soup! No hot liquids or food afterwards for a while, cold stuff is better. Hope it all goes well :)
