Train with injury or take a week off?

Hey all, sorry in advance as i often seem to come here for advice Ive been training now for around 6 months, time is limited but i do 4/5 sessions a week and although the sessions are short (7 or 8 sets per workout) they are always to failure and i focus on all the big exercises (squat, deadlift, bench, weighted chins, shoulder press etc) for efficiency. Things have gone great, ive gone from not being able to do a full bodyweight chin to doing 8 reps with 20kg in a backpack for example. I dont measure, but the mrs has noticed and commented on the size gains. However yesterday i stupidly bounced a dumbell off my ribs and bruised them quite badly. Now i have a choice of either dosing up on painkillers and training..or taking a week off completely. The question is, if i take a full week of no exercise, will i actually lose a signifigant amount of the gains i have made? I know i should avoid aggravating my ribs, but the idea of a whole week not exercising horrifies me ;) Thanks

I'd say if you've been training for 6 months without a week off, taking a short break could help you recharge everything, not just heal your ribs. Keep your diet good and do a bit of cardio if you feel fidgetty, you really shouldn;t lose anything in a week unless you stop eating.

A week off is fine I reckon... I had 2 weeks off over xmas and the compounds stayed the same!! Sometimes a short break is good to have every so often

Cheers guys, everything you say makes sense- im just aware my workouts are very short anyway compared to most the people at the gym who do hours of weights (im in and out within 45 mins most nights). I imagine its a psychological thing, ill keep the protein high and keep away from the gym this week. Thanks again.

You'll probably come back stronger. You can take a week off, or if you enjoy training for its own sake(like me), just do some different stuff. De-load and do some isolation work for big reps on really low weights or do a bit of steady cardio. A change is as good as a rest.

I personally would train around it, no need for a week off for bruised ribs... Come on.
Journal Squat: 200kg Deadlift: 250kg Bench: 150kg

Thanks all for the advice, as to the guy spending hours on his triceps.. the main thing i see is people who seem to think their only muscles are in their biceps and chest ;)
