Training for CV, Advice please... 20 November 2009 22:00 (permalink)
 Hi  Guys

Some advice please...

Ive been strength training for a while now, however ive noticed my stamina/endurance has got terribly poor recently, also higher blood pressure as a side effect of the heavy weight training.

Im wanting to get upto a reasonable fitness and would like to start mountain biking but i want to get my fitness upto a decent level first, i also dont want to lose the muscle ive gained since training.

Has anyone been through this change? is there any bodybuilders out there who have a very active cardio lifestyle? any bodybuilding mountainbikers?

any hints/tips advice would be great, cheers!

    Hi moxy and welcome

It may be an idea to introduce a bit of cardio.  Even just to x HIIT sessions a week will help.

There are lots of bodybuilders who have an active cardio lifestyle

mmm i disagree with starting off with HIIT. think this would be too much as a beginner even if its only once a week. HIIT can be pretty intense.i would start off with basic preffered exertion, working at roughly 80% MHR upto 40mins constantly.think this would be better for working up to going out on the mountain bike.

Clearly something like metcon/HIIT gives the best CV adaption response but as with all exercise you have to start at a reasonable levels befitting fitness levels.

Cardio for 10 mins after weight training using a variety of modes (rowing machine, cycle, X trainer) then working up from there may be the way to go.

Start light and steady and increase the pace/resistance.

IMPE the rower/ergo gives the best results but it is also the one you will find the hardest.

High BP is not a fixed outcome of weight training by the way, if this is the explanation given by a doctor I would want justification at least.

HIIT routines don'e have to be 30 sec on 30 secs off.  They can be 30 secs on, 2 mins off.
