The gym is at fault for allowing the teacher to deliver a hazardous training session within their facility.
I am not 100% sure of legalities but if the teacher isnt qualified to teach resistance exercises to a minor and there is an accident they gym should be liable.
But this is an interesting one Kitty as you often see un-trained people offering advice to others in gyms yet the gyms supposedly cover themselves with consent forms and parQ's BUT as far as I know the laws are pretty crap when it comes down to the finer print.
It is mainly about negligence, if it can be proven and if so by whom
In my gym even the qualified staff teach hazardous technique!!!!!!!!!!!!

hey bud, just get everything you can from them it all helps get a better idea of things. Ultimately you need a full assessment to find out why its a problem in the first place not just why it hurts

Cheers, been in pain with my right elbow since my birthday which was late sept, as I said not a normal tennis elbow feeling but a seized feeling, was taking a lot of arimidex at the time, strangely it sometimes feels better after weight lifting and don't feel too bad at the min but that was a long time for it to be hurting, when my elbows flair up they normal take 2 weeks to go away. Got a feeling I've got arthritis in my right elbow and the armidex made it worse, but what do I know just a guess really. Cheers any way m8

Having passed my B.A.W.L.A(British amateur weightlifting association)teachers certificate I can say that the correct way to teach a exercise is
              1,silent demonstration
              2,talk through demonstration
3,description of movement, muscles used, start position, breathing rhythm and queries from the students.
Absolutely no weight at all should be added to the bar until the instructor is 100% confident in the students grasp of the exercise and form is bang on.
4,correct mistakes in form, coach and encourage.
Anything less than this being taught by somebody in a responsible (supposedly qualified)position should of been told really politely to leave the gym immediately.
It sound's like a accident waiting to happen kitty???and exactly why instructors are taught to teach groups correctly before being given a certificate to teach.

Nigal, similar to how I was taught (and common sense really) although I don't follow it exactly, after practice you find your own version based on it. It's acronymed as NAMSET

Thanks for the link V interesting I think the problem is with a lot of the gyms they simply cannot afford to have qualified instructors on the premises throughout opening times and that's it far cheaper just to get somebody to man reception and fly post the walls with health & safety warnings reminding members they are responsible for themselves.
Our gym advocates a induction session for new members however in 18months I have not actually seen this policy in practice, add to that the use of the machines and a lot of gym owners think that the use is self explanatory and therefore induction is a waste of there and the instructors limited time,as they could be teaching clients and getting zyx money instead.
I believe the use of free weights should be taught as a priority to all new members however in practice I can see the problems arising from this as most members think they know everything when in fact there knowledge is pretty basic and mostly been gained by watching somebody else or reading magazines/Internet etc.
I still say the person on duty should of asked the teacher/student combo to leave or at least arrange a suitable induction for them kitty,it sounds like the blind leading the blind.

Nigal, sadly it's not that sort of gym. It's not exactly a spit and sawdust gym but it's a small independent place. Don't think they do inductions unless you ask and can't say I've really seen any myself. I don't know the dialogue that took place as the teacher came into the gym but if he's told the staff he's a PE teacher he may think that qualifies him to show the lad what to do!

I thought unless you were specifically employed by the gym or have your own proven liability insurance and contract in place you were not allowed to teach anyone?  Could be wrong though and probably am.
