Udo's oil 03 February 2012 21:17 (permalink)
Last time I tried to use this I didn't like the taste, it was a couple of years ago and I got through 1 bottle and sold the other.

Now I'm looking into it again so have a few questions:

1) Are the capsules as good value for money as the liquid?
2) The oil is listed as 16 servings approx and the capsules 45 servings - am I right in thinking 1 oil serving per day = 3 capsule servings?
3) If I go for the oil, what are the best ways of getting this into my diet, what foods does it best go with?

Thanks for any help - hope Tony stops by!

1 - Almost certainly not. Capping costs money, especially softgel type caps so the bottle will be a better buy.

3 - Some people drizzle it over salad, or in shakes. I only ever drizzle it over tuna, maybe a tablespoons worth. It actually makes the tuna taste much nicer; really brings the fish flavour out, and of course not as 'dry'.

it actually doesnt taste that bad at all mate - flax is a bit nutty but i find udo's not bad to just have a teaspoon of on its own.

But as above over salad is what i do mostly, sometimes on cold brown rice/pasta too so its nor as dry.

Nope - capsulse are only really recommended for when convenience is absolutely paramount. I'd be necking 50 a day!

        2) The oil is listed as 16 servings approx and the capsules 45 servings - am I right in thinking 1 oil serving per day = 3 capsule servings?

Serving size recomendations on food supplements are a legal requirement - so we have to put on a number that is useful for the consumer. As above, my serving size would be 50 capsules if I were to be using them as my sole source of EFAs, and I wasn't using them for convenient topping up/on holiday/etc. As we wouldn't intend someone to take 50% of a bottle in one sitting, we don't recommend that. Make sense?

        3) If I go for the oil, what are the best ways of getting this into my diet, what foods does it best go with?

Do you use protein shakes? I slap mine in there every night, and I don't taste it at all. My current shake is 60g whey mix (reflex vanilla microwhey, cocoa powder, cinammon), 50ml udos, 1 x probiotic, 1 x enzyme, 4-5 ice cubes, ~400ml water. Shake it up good and hard and it comes out like a cinammon & chocolate milkshake, lovely!!

Alternatively there's some recipes here - http://www.udoschoice.co.uk/recipes - and basically anythinh with a sauce aspect to it (chilli, pastra sauces, etc) will soak it up nicely.

          thanks for the input everyone

it doesn't taste that bad really, but the transformation of food to have a suddenly oily texture is what I don't like, I seem to prefer bland and dry food! - maybe like partyboy says a tablespoons worth only?

patternsco - can't be doing with a spoon on its own!! maybe once I get used to it!

thanks for the recipe link as well Tony - so I can't cook with it but I can add it hot cooked food before eating? got myself some oil over the weekend, managed to get 30mls down me throughout yesterday - good start! yes I can put it in my protein shakes, nice - it's mainly the cookies and cream blend from bulkpowders so will see how it mixes with that

Yep - mix it into anything you've cooked, just don't cook with it

Should go well in cookies/cream, makes chocolate flavours better I find

I just use tesco olive oil, add 1/2 tablespoons to my shakes, tasteless and a good way of getting in extra calories and healthy fats, and cheap!

Doesn't conrtibute much at all in the way of EFAs, but yes, easy calorie addition
