The Potential Benefits of Ursolic Acid 

There's been a lot of press coverage recently of a natural substance called Ursolic Acid - and the potential health and fitness benefits it may hold.

A number of studies have been done on this compound, and the list of positive effects are impressive.



Ursolic Acid is believed to:

Reduce fat storage and increase fat burning, through inhibition of pancreatic lipase and enhanced lipolysis in fat cells. [1]

Reduce the conversion of blood sugar to fat, through inhibition of fatty acid synthase. [2]

Increase energy reserves in muscles by enhancing glycogen storage. [3]

Reduce abdominal (visceral) fat through the inhibition of 11bHSD1. [4]

Be anti-carcinogenic through inhibition of the STAT3 activation pathway. [5]

Lower cholesterol through the activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-α. [6]

Reduce estrogen levels through aromatase inhibition. [7]

Strengthen bones by enhancing differentiation and mineralization of osteoblasts. [8]

Increase lean muscle mass through enhanced sensitivity to IGF-1 and insulin and inhibition of atrogin-1 and MuRF1. [9]

We will post up an interview we ran with Patrick Arnold where he went into some detail on its mode of action. Just waiting for him to sign off on it at present.

Ursolic acid is present in many plants, including apples, basil, bilberries, cranberries, elder flower, peppermint, rosemary, lavender, oregano, thyme, hawthorn, prunes. Apple peels contain large quantities of ursolic acid and related compounds.[5]
Ursolic acid can serve as a starting material for synthesis of more potent bioactive derivatives, such as anti-tumor agents.[6] It has been found to reduce muscle atrophy and to stimulate muscle growth in mice.[7][8]
Usolic acid was found to be a potent aromatase inhibitor in numerous studies which may partly explain it's anti-cancerous activity.[9] [10]

Other names for ursolic acid include, 3-beta-3-hydroxy-urs-12-ene-28-oic-acid, 3-β-hydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid, urson, prunol, and malol.

Is it going to be an extract from sage, or a synthetic Ursolic acid?

It's a herbal extract, yes. 25% ursolic acid, and around 15-20% oleanolic acid.
I don't know of any reason to cycle off it.

PA lost fat and retained muscle while slacking off, with no change to his diet. By his own admission he "spent most of the summer pretty drunk" but says he "hasn't been this ripped since i was a young guy".
Logs will be springing up over the next few weeks as the product becomes more widely available. There's one on AM that's just started.

What are your views on Ursolic Acid's effects on your sperm? 
 
Would vitamin C and NAC counter act the toxicity show towards sperm in rats? if so, has this been shown in lab work by Patrick Arnold?

If you're trying to conceive, maybe give it a miss until you've knocked her up.

I dunno, maybe. Toxic is a very unpleasant and emotive word. It doesn't mutate or kill sperm, it just reduces motility (in some rat studies).
 
As I mentioned earlier, our product is part ursolic acid and part oleanolic acid. They are very similar compounds with very similar effects.
Have a look at this study:
The effect of oleanolic acid on sperm motion characteristics and fertility of male Wistar rats
In the study, the rats that received oleanolic acid were unable to impregnate the lady rats during the time they were taking the OA, but as soon as the OA was removed, they all knocked up their rat girlfriends.

Treated males failed to impregnate females, whereas control and oleanolic acid withdrawn males achieved 100% pregnancies.

That suggests that OA, and perhaps by extension UA, could function as reversible oral contraceptives. Obviously I'm not going to suggest you throw away your condoms and flush the GF's pills down the sink just yet, I'm just suggesting it's not necessarily a negative thing to reversibly reduce fertility. Unless you're catholic.

Slightly off topic but I wanted to thank you for the information you've provided to me so far on pro hormones, I've read a lot of your posts and threads on various forums and have always found them useful and to the point.

I'm not aware of any studies on the long term effects.
 
You're welcome. It's a subject that fascinates me. Repping for PA is good too because I learn a lot of sciency stuff studying the ingredients in his product range, like ursolic acid.

Interested to try this, but a little concerned about the fertility side effect is this a definate side with using UAcid or is it from OAcid or actually both?
