Krav Maga, I have never done it but I have done wing chun, and to be honest I didn't really rate it.

I know people who do Krav Maga and they say it's probably the best self defence for street situations there is.

That said, ultimately it comes down to how well you are taught. Whilst Krav Maga would be my preferance, Learning Wing Chun from a really good instructor would be preferable to learning Krav Maga from a mediocre one, in my opinion.

But all things being equal, from what I've seen and heard, Krav Maga would be my choice.

ive heard good things of krav maga and not heard much of wing chun to be honest

in my line of work not having heard of a self defence art is usually a bad sign

you could try one of each or find someone who has done krav maga (maybe on here) and compare their comments to jango's

thats because in some ways they are similar as are a lot of martial arts in some way or another, at the end of the day my friend you should practice the art that suits you the best and you are able to use effectively if you need it, i have heard of both systems and have heard good things about both of them, wing chun is good because it is very direct and to the point, krav maga is more militaryu based but as opposed to things like trapping they are both similar in the way they go about things

I agree and disagree with Jango.
I have done a bit of both. I had a great wing chun teacher and an ok Krav maga teacher and I would err on the side of the good wing chun class. However KM does have some good exercises for getting out of a 'fracas' that I haven't seen elsewhere. The class I attanded didn't concentrate enough on the real combat techniques for my liking.
Finding the right class so that you can learn is much more important than chosing any one style.

ive been doing krav maga for 2 years now ...

trained with many forms of martial arts but this for me is the best and most effective,

you can apply it so easily, and used correctly can give you a serious edge !

the only bad thing is, some of the movements & grapples ect can be very easy too take to far.. theres a very fine line between reasonable and excessive force

for example in training last week a guy who had a varied background in martial arts got his leg broken when someone was fighting him, he didnt mean to do it !! it was purely the technique and the power behind it .....

so in conclusion, its the best form of self defence ive ever come accross... but too be used only when really reallly neccesary !

also ... anyone interested in ckm feel free too email me if you in or around the kent area and fancy giving it a go !!

krav is the best self defence art by far imo i mean its been pressure tested in real combat my the israeli's for 50 years. it is simple to learn as its based on your natural reactions where as wing chun has a reputation as taking a long time to learn.

    Wise words.

No matter how good the whole style, if you have a crap teacher you're going to find your progress limited.

I hear ya but slightly disagree about Wing Chun talking a long time to learn, longer i would suggest is a better word, Krav deffo is tested on the battlefield but what about the blatently vicious Wing Chun moves from the Bui Jee form, anyway anyone who has done both , like myself will notice many moves taken from Wing Chun, i mean the Wing Chun i was taught.

im not trying to say wing chun is useless, i would rather know wing chun then nothing but for instance chain punches and trapping hands are a big part of wing chun but dont really work in a streetfight.
you made a good point about the Bui Jee form, krav is pretty much just a mixture of the more vicious techniques from the martial arts, the techinques most arts dont teach anymore.

Have you been in many street fights, i have, and chain punches and deffo trapping hands have their place, ie, attacked in phone box i trapped hands and headbutted my way out, attacked by drunk traveler, after i put him down i chainpunched his face as when these guys get up again its usually bad news as his mates will be close by.Hopefully you never will have to use either but here are two examples.

I would say get a mobile as to avoid the phone box attacks and go with Krav Maga - if you had to chose.

My answer - why choose one art over another when you can cross train in several?

However if I had to recommend one single art for you to focus on, seeing that there's a high probability of a blade being involved in any live situation these days, I personally would be looking for a system that is based around bladed weapons, making the filipino art of kali / escrima / arnis (three different names for essentially the same system) the ideal starting point.

Research it, see if it rocks your boat
