Water, Why so much 05 March 2010 16:42 (permalink)
Hey yall!

Just wondering why it is important to drink loads of water. Ive been reading that some folks will drink 2 - 3 litres per day.

I dont drink anywhere near this but if it will help my progress then i will certainly make an effort to increase.

And wen we say water are we including any drink or just plain water? if you have a glass of orange squash for e.g. is that included?

sorry if this seems a very silly question.

thanks in advance

Keeping your wee diluted reduces the risk factor for kidney stones. Dare I ask what colour your wee is? It should be very pale in colour. If it's yellow or brown, you should drink more. Anything liquid will do, but bear in mind that juices & squashes are ~10% sugar and milk is ~7% protein. Too much caffeine will make you wee more. Sugar-free drinks are virtually all water.

      Thanks Nigeepoo

Are there any particular advantges in training terms for drinking lots of water? although preventing kidney stones is a good enough reason for me!!

Im pretty sure im not drinking enough anyway. Just wondering if it will help with training also.

      Thanks

Very important especially when looking to increase blood volume.  As stated above a very large percentage of the body is water.

Water also helps your muscles to look full.  Do not get confused with hydration and subcutaneous water.  The majority of subcutaneous water is down to sodium.

I up my water intake when dieting, it helps with condition. I wont mention the name but i know a competative natural bodybuilder who 2 days before competition drank 18 litres! and the night before the show 10 litres. Idea being your pissing out more than your taking it, thus improving condition.

/\ Drinking a lot of water pre contest is a good idea, as long as your sodium intake is in check (very low a couple of days out).  It keeps the muscles looking full.  18 litres though? overkill maybe!

Ok so what is subcataneous water? and why would one look to increase blood volume? very interesting this and know i need to educate myself on this but i like to hear other peoples experiences.

im going to have a couple of litres of water a day for a week or so and see if i feel a difference.

                      thanks again

Maybe, but he did win the show therefore id be willing to try it, just to see if it worked for me. Everyone has different ways of doing things and although it worked for him, it may not work for someone else,. All you can is try imo.

Water has many weight loss benefits besides health benefits. It speeds up metabolism so we burn more calories than normal. It is also a natural appetite suppressant. When we feel hungry, we should drink a glass of water to suppress hungry.
We should drink 8-10 glasses pure water. Other drinks such as orange squash can not be count as a water.

Other drinks can most certanly count. Plss unless you have a distill you won't be drinking pure water.

You need to be nicely hydrated. Nothing more. If your peeing all the time and your urine is totally clear your drinking to much. The amount we need will be dependent on lot of factors.

It dosn't speed up metabolism. If it dose then I'd like to see the data on that?

If it helps curb appetite then fair enough. I have never found this to be the case on low kcals.

About 6 months ago I tried drinking 2 litres of Evian water a day for about a month, The only change I noticed was I was going the toilet a lot more often. I can't imagine drinking like 5-7 litres a day.

Since I've gone back to drinking about 4-6 cups of green tea with the odd class of water. I sip water while I work out as well.

I drunk a lot of water yesterday, more than usual. I went to the toilet 3 times during the night time and took one of those looooooong pisses lol.

I probably wont be doing that again. I really annoys me having to get up out of bed to go to the toilet! You all know the feeling - you wake up from a deep sleep with a weak bladder, lying there for 5 mintues thinking to yourself "FFS I can't be arsed to get out of bed!" but you're left with no choice but to get up half a sleep, stumbling all over the place in the dark trying not to wake the family up!
What's the worst that could happen?

Since I've gone back to drinking about 4-6 cups of green tea with the odd class of water. I sip water while I work out as well.

You won't notice long term kidney problems in the short term.

Personally, my dad is prone to kidney stones (not sure why, maybe just cos he drinks no water or maybe he's just predisposed to them) but either way I make sure to drink buckets of the stuff. 5-6 litres a day at the very minimum. Usually I'm just constantly drinking water, when I'm at home I have a pint glass with me at all times and when it gets empty, I refill it. Frequent trips to the bathroom are a small price to pay for kidney health imo. Considering the amount of protein we all it, it just makes sense.

As mentioned a significant part of the human body is made from water and every physiological process in your body takes place in water or depends on water. Your performance will dramatically to be reduced if you are dehydrated. I always drink more during training and feel stronger between sets. With regards to water being in other drinks and foods this is true but it's always best to get water in it's raw form where possible imo
