Weak grip and small hands
05 February 2012 11:46
( permalink)
Like the title says i've got a pretty weak grip and my hands are a little smaller than average. The result is that its holding me back a little. I was doing walking lunges yesterday with 20kg in each hand. The weight felt ok mostly but my grip kept going. I know my grip will improve more in time but is there anything I can do to compensate for having small hands? I cant help feeling its holding me back from pushing harder in exercises where grip is important

I'd work at improving your grip. Barbell holds with a standard barbell or even better with fat grips on for time will help and you'll quickly improve. If in the mean time your grip is taking away the ability to target a muscle then use straps and work on building your grip seperately, eventually your grip will catch up. Grip strength can quickly be improved if trained regularly. If you have small hands you will always have that as a weakness but you can overcome alot if you train your grip hard and often.

Fat grips just make the holds harder, i have normal sized hands and use a 3" axle for holds occasionally, i can no way wrap my hands around it completely but it works the hell out of my grip! Start with a normal bar and as your grip improves up the weight first then maybe try some fat grip/axle holds. Farmers walks also work great for grip training, just use heavy dumbells if you don't have access to proper farmers.

As above really. Keep lifting and keep going nice and heavy on the pulling exercises. Your grip will improve. If it's very restrictive, use straps - but personally I'd only use them after grip failure, so start your heavy sets without straps, and just use them to finish when you're grip has gone - this way you will keep improving your grip without compromising the wider routine.

Your grip is just another 'muscle group' that gets hit when you do pulling movements. IIRC you said in another thread that your PT was getting you to use straps or gloves for deadlifting. My advice now as it was then is to ditch these and get some chalk, and focus on working your grip on your pulling/back day. I would use straps for DB lunges because I'm presuming you're doing these on Legs day and your grip is merely a hindrance rather than something you are targeting. I do similar on my Legs day, I use straps for RDL because the only reason I'm doing the lift is to work my posterior chain, unlike regular deadlifting which I do to work a lot more muscles, including my grip. I wouldn't necessarily say you need to do specific grip work though. If my memory serves me correctly and you have been using straps for things like deadlifting, this will be the likely cause of your weak grip more so than anything else.
JOURNAL I'm tougher than leather, I'm smoother than suede, Always never broke 'cos I'm usually paid.

Agree with above comment using chalk... My deadlifts are about 5-10kg better off when using chalk... I kid you not!!

Also, don't underestimate the grip growing quality of dead hangs. They really work to strengthen that grip.

I have liquid chalk, will go back to using that for most things. Thanks lads, am sure it'll all come together in time. I just disappoint myself a bit when i cant finish something
