Weight training followed by cardio
-

Hi guys, I'm currently on a mission to get lean as is the guy I train with. I read in Muscular Development Magasine that doing cardio after weights is not effective because a different set of hormone resonses happens when you're doing weights to cardio (they have copies of MD at the gym, it's not with me so I haven't got a reference). So the theory is you should do them on separate days. Unfortunately he's absolutely insistant that we should do half an hours weights followed by half an hours cardio each session (3 times per week). So should we be doing 2 days of weights and a separate cardio day? or is it ok to do both on the same day? Anyone else do both and get good results? Any studies/articles you may have come across to prove/disprove the theory in MD? I'm keen to know your thoughts. CHeers, Mak.

when I cut I do 30 mins cardio after weights and I know some big guys who compete who do the same. I also know a guy however who just qualified for the IFBB finals in Qatar (this week) who never does cardio at all and just diets accordingly. This is the guy, pic from 2 weeks ago at the qualifications best try and see what suits you. this would be better in a different sub-forum btw.

i wouldnt ever do cardio before a weight session... the performance drop is crazy. in my younger days i was able to bench 60kg, fantastic i thought then. One day i decided to go for a run and then hit the weights after. I was stapled to the bench under 60kg and gasping out for help lol

Another perspective is to do your cardio unfueled - or first thing in the morning. I used to find this suited me, I can't lift for toffees in the morning yet could do low intensity cardio which was good on cutting for me. Switch it around, you'll have to see what works for you.
Doing better today than I did yesterday, but not as good as I'm gonna do tomorrow!

I know I can hardly talk, as I'm a fat ****e atm, but you're best not to get bogged down in some of the more minor details of training. Got your diet solid first and the fat/weight will come down. Northern Rocker has shown above what a good diet alone can achieve.

i do a lil bit cv after weights and do cv later on a night, that all depends how much time you have spare tho. i find cv later on a night better than the old n fueled am cv method
start weight 68kg best lifts bench: 170kg 3 reps cg 155kg single deadlift: 185kg 2 reps squat: 200 kg 2 reps clean and press 100kg 2 rep weight: 108kg bf 14% ish status:cutting

I'm a bit limited for time so can't train, eat, have a gap then train again. The diet is good, I just basically need to know if I should do a mixture of weights and cardio or separate them to different days. If that article in MD is to be believed I shouldn't mix the two.

When i did my gym instructors course in 2000 the senior lecturer said that doing weights first ( this speeds the metabolism up fivefold, Then a quick energy drink to replace glycogen stores then your cardio after.

I thought this would defeat the object, I was always under the impression you want glycogen levels to be depleated so when you commence cardio you start fat burning?

at the end of the day its cals in v cals out. all cardio does (besides health benefits) is burn more cals. as posted above you can cut down with or without cardio. ideally it would be best to do cardio and weights on sepperate days that way you can give 100% to both. but doing cardio after weights wont do you any harm you are only doing 30mins of each so 1hr total isnt much.

20 mins of moderatly challenging cardio after weights can be very effective. What they have there in MD I would assume is a theory based upon a few little bits of physiology. Results speak louder than theory. That said the best time to do cardio is when you are going to actually get it done most consistently.
