After a layoff back down the gym, and aching ! Not going to bother with split for now as been told need to get my tendons stronger (which makes sense). At moment doing mon: chest, shoulders and tri.. tues: back, legs and bi, weds cardio repeat thurs and fri. Does this seem okay, eating like a horse ! Protien etc. Any supplements that might help me re-cover quicker, new year it gets serious !

Basically, back in training after long break, new what I was doing ! should I split bodyparts or train all untill I can get a bit more serious !
Are their on supplements that will assist in recovery?

Hi UKMAN, I did a similar thing nearly a year ago after a 15 year layoff!!!

I'd say you need to gauge your recovery from workouts and twice a week 2 day split is a bit too much. I started back with one exercise per bodypart for 3 sets of 10.  Did full body to begin with twice a week and after a few weeks went to 2 day split but 2 exercises per body part.  Now on a 3 day split with each body part trained once a week.  The main problem is holding back from what you used to train like so as to give ample recovery time and avoid injury. Listen to your body and go with it.  Once you've trained hard enough recovery/diet are more important.

Also ask yourself why you had a long layoff. For me it was because I was training 6 days a week previously and felt either do that or nothing since 2-3 days a week wasn't worth it. Now I'm older I've settled for the fewer training sessions a week ( three)  but without the long layoffs. Longevity is the key. As a result I train just as hard since I know I've got the recovery time and it fits in with other commitments/hobbies.  I also took the view to get into the gym, train hard and then get out, rest, eat and do other things. If I don't need to train a bodypart again for a week that's fine.

With regard to supplements I've found whey protein 3 times a day(in between meals with some fruit) helps with growth and recovery as does gettting ample sleep.

UKMAN - if you have come back after a lay off, ease yourself back into training slowly. Id still do a split, but maybe a 3 day eg mon, wed, fri. Once you've got back into it again, then u can advance your routine and excercises back to where you were.
