My best tips ermm.....

Dont expect to much too soon.
Be Consistent.
Set short and long term goals.
Dont let the odd slip up signal a complete relapse.
When tempted to eat something dodgy ask yourself do I really want this?
Aim for a steady sensible rate of loss rather than a crash loss
Dont pursue chemical help to start with its a waste of time it does come down to CV (and lots of it) and diet ending up in calorie deficit its the only way!

Life is a journey, travel it well....

That's me in 2004. I weighed about 265lbs at the time. I've been racing BMX since I was 14 years old. After High school I progressively gained more and more weight. I'm now at 301lbs. Over the past few years I've started to have back and knee problems. About a week and a half ago I could barely get out of bed. I sat there in pain and asked myself "why am I doing this to myself?" I decided then that I needed to act now or else. If I'm in this much pain at 29 whats it going to be like at 40, 50? Will I live till 50? I had to do something. Now is the time to get on the road to success.

Re:What's your weight loss story? - 15 November 2009 01:14
geesjourney, you have taken the biggest step in making the decision to do something.

I have dropped from 273 lbs to 203 lbs and aim to lose another 14 to 21 lbs to be where I want to be. This has been done through weights, cardio and sensible eating. If I can do it, anyone can, and we all have our different triggers that set us off on the successful journey.

Both me and my wife were (still are, but less!) overweight. My wife had a routine check at the docs and they told her she was borderline diabetes and should lose weight. I figured if she had problems, I might well have them too. So we decided to lose weight, together.

I have lost 70 lbs and she has lost 60 lbs, and whilst we are still not quite where we want to be, the difference in our health and overall feeling of well being is incredible.

I would pretty much echo the tips given above, especially about losing in a steady way and not being put off by the odd setback. Unless you are superhuman, these will happen.

It is great when people comment on your weight loss, but for me the biggest revelation has been in shopping for clothes. Previously this was a case of looking around for whatever they had in my size. Now I can choose anything in the store and they have it. I am buying things in a medium, when before was often Extra Extra Large. These things will be your motivation to continue.

Another thing I have found useful is that when your clothes become too big, get rid of them. Give them to a charity or whatever, but don't keep them. That way they can't become a safety net for bad habits to creep back in and for your weight to creep back up.

I am 40 years old and have tried all sorts over the years, and have never been successful like this. So like I say, if I can do it, anyone can!

Re:What's your weight loss story? - 15 November 2009 20:22
on my 18th birthday i was 18 stone fat, never trained a day in my life.  My partner then (Started going out with her when i was 15) ridiculed/tormented me and put me down every day for being fat, she basically stopped being affectionate towards me and pretty much made me think i was a total faliure in life... after that i lost weight to 11 stone the total wrong way.. starvation, never ate anything, took hoodia to suppress my appetite, (my body ate all my muscle/and most of fat... in the end i was taken to hospital as i was fainting all the time and allmost died.  Since then i got rid of that bitch...(Cutting Story short) bulked for about 2/3 years (Dirty bulking) gained knowledge in training and dieting correctly, bulked to 16stone 3. now currently cutting and am going to be cutting untill 13 stone 5 = -86kg which is what weight i would like to fight muay thai

Currently - training hard - have a new partner (fiancee) a little girl who is 8 months... running parts of the family business - hopeing to have my first muay thai fight within 12 months... VERY happy now.

all i have to say to people is, it takes time, Will power will help, but most of all the only person who can really help you and guide you, is yourself!
Age : 25

Hi there, Im a new user :).

Thought id comment on this thread

About a year and a half ago, i was trying for the army. I was 15stone7lbs and my height on 5ft 8. Im naturally well built, But back then i was huge, immensley overweight.

And i also smoked alot of dope. But after laying off it i found motivation, My goal was getting in the army.
I started to attend a martial arts class 2-3days a week and jogged between the other days in the week.

After a couple of months i started to shed the weight. andafter about 4months of training i found myself going from 15st7lbs to a 11st11lbs. I could jog for at least 2miles without stopping for a breather, and could do 72 pressups in a 2minute non-stop session.

I dont really remember what my diet plan was. But i know it involved alot of tuna.

Due to personal reasons, The army wouldent accept me :( . I got with my ex-fiancee who after a year and a half it ended horribly. I stopped jogging, stopped martial arts and find myself overweight again. same weight as last time, But less Fat as the 1st time. I suffer from depression which i find affects my motivation.

Ive decided to take up martial arts again, as i found attending a gym didnt help. (i wasent working out as much as i should have been). And it guts me a little, as im trying to remember my original diet plan, but cant remember for the life of me.

Could someone pass some ideas please!!! Thanks

hi there guys thought this would be a good place to start with using the forum with my weight loss story.

ive never really been a thin guy well untill now that is, id always hovered around the 18 19 stone mark with size 42 jeans and xxl tops i was FAT and when my missis was pregnant with our daughter my weight shot up to the point were i wouldnt get on the scales as i was to embarassed of the result, then 1 day i saw a picture of myself with my dogs and it made me feel ill so i decided to drop a bit of weight.
i tried everything for the quick fix from most etherda weight loss pills to a clen cycle and still i just got minor losses so i changed my whole life style i went out brought a punch bag and some kettle bells and have worked my ass off both mentally and phyically for the past 18 months and gave my self a goal that if i could get a flat stomach then id get my daughters name tattooed on my abs.
as i said its taken 18 months but now im weighing in a 12st 5, size 32 jeans and medium tops
yes i do watch everything i eat and i eat as clean a possible apart from saturday when i have my well done meal lol
anyway thats my story just thought id share it with you all

Hi there. Brand spanking new to this site. Wanted to just post my story and get involved really. I am 18, 6'1, currently 18st 8lbs.

I turned 18 having pretty much never burned off a calorie in my life. My brother has been a serious lifter all his life and decided he was gonna show me how. I was 23 stone and obese class 3 (the highest level of obese you can get!). I decided to get in the gym, my first day in was 24th June 2009. 6 days after my birthday.

My brother started me off lifting weights and not doing any cardio in the slightest. The weight started melting off.

Eventually I had read hundreds of books and subscribe to all the magazines and I have lost tons of weight. I went onto running outside, and built it up with a solid diet. And after 5 months I had lost 4 and a half stone. I put a little on over christmas so i havnt lost any more, just worked off what i put on, but 7 months in, 23stone down to 18stone 8lbs, and i am on target to make 18stone in 4 weeks.

Just wanted to get my own little story up.

p.s I managed to run 10k on wednesday, in a time of 56minutes.

Re:What's your weight loss story? - 15 February 2010 19:54
Last March i finally decided enough was enough, my weight was 105k (16.5 stone) totally out of shape, mentally i felt tired and my self confidence at an all time low. Over the years i have made many attempts at loosing weight and went to the gym or went out for a run but never stuck at anything for a length of time to see results.

Anyway last March i went to my local boxing gym and had a couple of pay as you go sessions. Straight away i noticed a difference in my mental shape. I had more energy and was generally happier in myself. All this from a couple of sessions so i decided at the beggining of April to join the gym for a month up front, this encouraged me to go to the gym to make sure i got my moneys worth.

After a week or so and training hard by my standards i felt great but my weight was still the same, so after searching online for some diet advice decided if i was going to do this i would do it right, i found a personal trainer in my area who was a thai boxer so i signed up for a few sessions with him, he gave me nutrition advice put me on a 6 meals a day plan and i worked out with him for 1 hour per week, he also recorded my weight and body fat. The sessions i was doing with PT i was able to do on my own at the gym. After only a couple of weeks training wasnt a chore anymore and i was actually eating a hell of a lot more than i ever did before. I was struggling to fit the 6 meals in ant 1st.

As the weeks and months went past i was adding more and more to my training schedule, instead of going on the treadmill at the gym i started to go out for a run in the morning and then go to the gym in the afternoon concentrating more on resistance work and getting my cardio from the boxing workouts i was following. As soon as i started this the weight was basically falling off me. Each week i noticed a difference but the main boost was when the people close to me started to notice aswell, nothing gives you a boost like someone telling you that you look great or that youve lost weight.

In the last couple of months i have changed gym from a boxing gym to a normal fitness suite so i now get my cardio from running, cycling and cross training, I have also started to add kettlebells into my workout. Along with resistance and weights i am in the shape of my life. My weight has dropped from 16.5 stone to just under 14st at the moment. My waist size from 36/38 to 34 (32 at a push).

Most importantly i feel great and have the motivation to continue my training to push myself as much as i can and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Re:What's your weight loss story? - 19 May 2010 10:49
My story began back in 1999, up till then I had always had active jobs which basically alowed me free reign to eat & drink what I like. My weight was approx 17st and height 6ft 3, due to me having a large frame I carried it well and had only had the slightest beer belly.

In 2000 I started a new job, but it was soley office work, mostly nights and long weekends. This were the trouble started with my eating habits. For whatever reason(boredoom probably) I started to eat rubbish, and in huge quantities, when on nights I would eat a large meal before leaving home and during the night I would also order a takeaway, all this along with a bag full of crisps, chocolate bars etc. This carried on for a few years and I slowly noticed the weight start to pile on, clothes started to get smaller, my skin would hurt as I suppose it was stretching, and before long my weight had balooned to what we think was between 28 & 30 stone

At this time I noticed my whole demeaner had changed, I was sluggish, food was always on my mind, I would worry about not having enough food during the day to get by, I wore the same clothes because they were the only ones to fit and hid the mess I had become.

It was back in 2008 when my daughter was born that I finally realised what I'd become and then decided to do something about it. I started to eat alot more healthy and a few stone came off, but I seemed to platau and the weight refused to budge....Until last year when a mate invited me along to the Local Gym, I then had a ureka moment and had finally found a place where I loved to be.

I started on a Weight Training program last October and have loved it from day 1, & train 3 mornings a week, this along with a high protein diet, including protein shakes has seen my progress finally starting to see results, my weight has come down to 21 stone, this along with building noticable muscle mass, and I've never been fitter. I am aiming for 17 to 18 stone and hope to be as big as I can get.

I'm not confident enough to post a picture just yet, but will do when my shape gets a bit better.

It's been a right struggle to be honest and the fight isn't over yet, but my advice to anyone who wants to lose weight is to have self discipline, set goals, join your local gym & more importantly have belief in yourself that you can do it.

Thanks for reading.

I first posted in this thread a year and a month ago (page 2) when I had lost a load of fat.

A year on, I haven't made great progress in growing much, but here is the current pic.  I have really struggled to keep the fat off, but doing okay.

Age: 36
Height: 6ft 2in

At my heaviest, I was 24.5 stone (around 3-4 years ago) and started to have the usual health problems like high blood pressure, blood sugar etc.

I've been overweight for as long as I can remember, so I suppose it was easier not to do anything about it and carry on the same way that I always had.

I won't say that I had a 'seen the light' moment, but one day I did realize that if I continued this way, I might not be around into my old age.
I started to eat better and exercise, which was quite a shock at first considering that I would get out of breath walking up a flight of stairs!

I now cycle every day, play basketball, squash etc and it has been a revelation!  It's true what they say, that exercise is addictive especially as you start to see results.

As of now, I'm 17.5 stone and my first target is 16 stone.  When I get there, I'll re-assess things.

A big thanks to friends and family for their encouragement...you've been an important part in all of this...you know who you are.

My advice to anyone wanting to lose weight is simple....GO FOR IT!!!
By making some sensible choices and sticking with it, you will become more and more motivated.  You WILL see results and this will spur you on even more!
Remember this....there may be people in your life that discourage you from your goals.  Give them two fingers and show them what you're capable of....you will not regret it!  Value the people who are on your side as they will help you to your goals.

Good luck!

Dear All

Although its nothing to0 amazing or miraculous, I thought I would tell my little story of dieting progress for what its worth.

Im 5ft 10 and just coming up towards 38 years old. Just over 3 years ago I was 16st 7 and suddenly realised I was much too heavy, leading up to this I had the misconception that I was just broad, strong etc anything but just fat. After we had our first baby I decided I wanted to do something about it and after trying various fad diets that I could never stick to. I embarked on the Lipotrim program and manged to lost around 2 and half stone in 14 weeks. However it stripped away fat and muscle and left me with a funny shape, i continued just eating more healthily then I had done before the Lipotrim and evertually touched just under 13 stone. The picture on the left was taken in July 2008 before I started to eat more in the philosphy of Bill Philips Body for life and started to weight train more seriously. The Body for life promises amazing results in 12 weeks and shows the kind of photos that just look unbelievable almost like it cant be the same person.

I didnt get the same amazing result after 12 weeks but stuck with the principal anyway. At Xmas I was looking much more muscualr but had increased weight to around 13st 10 and didnt want to head back to where I was so started to count calories. I worked out my daily allowance for active W/O days and in active days and tried to come in under by around 400/500 calories.

I gradually got down to around 12st 12 at the lowest but after any good meals over the weekend would always start a few pounds up and then just keep going around in circles.

4 weeks ago I read Papa s Dave palumbo keto diet and have done this just finishing my 2nd fortnights cheat meal last night and had dropped to 11 st 10 at the lowest point last week. I now plan to keep going on the cycle until i get down to 10 or 12% body fat and then try to bulk but very gradually and as lean as possible just to try and get more muscular as I have lost soem since Xmas (not neccesarily on the keto diet) however this could have just been fat around the same muscles I have now.

I have no idea what BF% i am now and if anybodys good at estimating, please let me know however harsh. My stomach muscles are coming out, they dont show it the best in these pics but i am struggling around the very bottom, and have got a fat ridge over my belly button which im hoping i can tighten it up and dreading any folds of loose skin.

I will post back on whenever I finally get to a BF% im happy with or at leat look like a good BF%. It may take some time as we had another little girl two weeks ago so I'm not doing my usual training and just having to grab it where I can for now.

Thanks for now.

John

I had serious head injury during workout at gymnastics school back in 1997, was forced to a hospital and spent there round 6 months, on the bed all the time-no walking no sitting etc., gained more than 40 kg. Doc told me I won't be able to do any sort of sports and should be happy I am alive (very pessimistic doctor lol)

after rehab went to gym to loose weight cause hated myself and my new size. well, that was very slow, raw and simple exercising but good begin with. lost my first 20 kg in 8 months. rest 15 kg in next 5-7. still carrying those 5 kg lol :D

invited my Doctor (the pessimistic one lol) to my competition, I was placed 3rd in aerobic fitness and proved my point-nothing is impossible if you really want that. pretty amazing :)

Well DONE!!  woof'd those abs are amazing, looked at your other pics, great results -- what kinda diet/training did you follow once you had achieved the initial weight loss (i.e your contest prep) as I think a lot of ladies who perhaps are not members (I know a few who browse here) are maybe only 12-18lbs overweight which isn't a helluva lot for some, and they might be interested in how you did it.

Regardless of that you look great

usually I weight more offseason, round 10 kg difference but now trying to keep eye on my food and have less lol
I am sensitive to carbs so trying to avoid them, no pasta or white bread in my meals :) do not use sugar at all, sweeteners only. eat only chicken/salmon/tuna with salads (mostly cucumber, ice lettuce), no dairy products; lean protein.
offseason usually I go to the gym 3 times a week or go to aerobics instead of gym.
on prep, I go 3 times to dance (aerobics), 4 times gym, last 2 weeks before comps, I train twice a day-morning cardio, evening gym.
bit short description lol

Ok ladies and gents my turn,

Age 23
Height 6 1"

Weight
Heaviest: 16st 10lbs
Lightest: 12st 8lbs
Current 13st 4lbs

Story

I woke up one morning stepped on the scales and i was 16st 10lbs, shocked and in disbelief i knew i had to do something.

Luckily i had just started a new job (office based however) flexible working hours and a manager who's a marathon runner so obviously into her fitness.
With the job allowing me to finish work and get to the gym and a boss who encouraged me couple with info from various forums (including this one!) i managed to go from a whoping 16 st 10lbs to 12st 8lbs.

I then got some bad info from forums and members at my gym which led me to a dirty bulk (no steroids if thats what your thinking) i also bought my first house which needed a **** load of work doing to it and i could slowly feel my diet/exercise regime slipping away. To top this off i was involved in a car crash, a month of work and 2 months without trainning......

Since then and up till now i have hovered around the 13st 4lbs mark. So the reasan for this post, i want to cut again and regain the look i had this time last year.

This forum i believe will help me over the next couple of months, i will add pictures tonight.

thanks to all who have already posted thier stories, very inspirational. Keep it up.

Bowen. out.

I piled on 2 stone a few years ago when I stopped smoking and got content in my relationship with Desmo.

I went from being a very slim 7 stone to a podgy 9 stone .. and I didn't even notice it ! I thought I could feel myself getting more curves but it wasn't until I went on a camping holiday and looked at the pictures afterwards and I was disgusted with myself.

It took me a little while to do anything about it because ( and this sounds terrible ) but I didn't want to lose my new found puppies ! I was getting really upset with the way that I looked though and started to notice every lump and bump. I would get ready to go out and then catch sight of myself in the mirror and break down in tears.

I totally lost my self esteem, I went into my shell and was worried Desmo would feel short changed and stop liking me

Enough was enough.... I started going to classes in the gym ( Body Pump, Body Combat, Body Attack ) and cleaned up my diet.

I started taking progress pictures ( I hope nobody is eating lunch ! )

Pretty revolting huh...

I faffed about with the classes for about a year or so, I made some progress but not as much as I would have liked.

I changed gyms, I left my ' Health Club ' type place and joined a gym with a mahooosive free weights room. One of the instructors also did PT sessions. So I joined up and got some sessions with him with a proper 2 day weights split and upped the cardio. He was brilliant, he was an ex paratrooper and did lots of shouting ! He also instructed the Boxercise class and I had some private boxing done with him.

I made more progress with him in the 6 months I was going to him than I did in the last year. He left the gym but he had shown me the ropes and I also started doing Muay Thai.

So here's where I am today ...

Actual weight loss between the before and after pics is only about 4 lbs but i've lost about 3/4" off my waist and hips and dropped 2 dress sizes.

I'm still not 100% happy and I have lost my way a few times, lost motivation at times but I've decided to compete next year !

My self esteem has come back and I'm a much more happier and confident person. Desmo has been my rock throughout and supported me and kicked me to the gym on the days I didn't feel like doing anything. My journal on here has been a massive help. I've got a lot to thank MT for

I would never have guessed I would be aiming to compete next year. The weigh lifting has done me the world of good and the Muay Thai has made me a more confident person.

Whenever anyone asks my advice about weight loss I ALWAYS advise doing weights.

/ends oscar speech

And here I am... 5 weeks out from my first competition

Re:What's your weight loss story? - 20 June 2010 08:55
My story is similar to so many people here on this forum it seems.

I've always been relatively lean as a kid - never thin and certainly not fat as i's always lead a very active lifestyle. Always running around outside always doing something outside. My metabolism was always strong and although i ate whatever i wanted, which wasn't particularly bad, i had the body to cope with it.

In my mid 20's - with two great sons - i found myself stuck in a relationship with a real no-hoper of a woman, someone with awful food habits and a sedentary lifestyle (she was an is well over 18 stone i am sure) which began slowly and insidiously infecting my own lifestyle and eating habits. Before i knew it i was eating takeaways at least every weekend - drinking 2 litres of coke a day - eating chocolate - binge eating, snacking left right and centre. Something had to change as i was dramatically overweight.

About 5-6 years ago i gave the Atkins diet a crack and, admittedly, lost a lot of weight and even managed to run a 10k marathon thanks to jogging during my lunch hour 2-3 times a week. However i lost my job and this completely destroyed my routine and i fell back into the rut very, very quickly. The Atkins diet really is not a good diet - because it is impossible to maintain it effectively and for the long term in my opinion. Sure you can blast through the early phases but the maintenance phase is just a total joke. Its a not a lifestyle change which was the problem. A diet needs to be flexible and it needs to work for you - not just starve you to death slowly.

So i was out of work for nearly a year - managed to get a new job but still the same overweight and poor eater i was before the Atkins. If anything i am sure i was worse! I reached a real low point at the beginning of 2009 when i saw three stretch marks on my stomach. I was so devastated by this. I'd reached a staggering 16 stone - had no energy, was lethargic all the time, and was living a joke of a lifestyle. Domestic problems with my soon to be ex wife only served to exacerbate things. A visit to my doctor confirmed i had an inflamed liver (the same as a heavy alcohol drinker). This was a massive warning shot to me and i was horrified.

Admittedly what i did next was wrong but it fixed things. I didn't diet per se - but cut out everything that was bad for me. No snacks, no chocolate, no sweets, no sugar, no caffeine, no soft drinks and regular breakfast, lunch and dinners. In the space of 4-5 months i lost 3 stone. As my marital problems increased, i effectively completely lost my appetite, and was slowly starving myself. I lost even more weight and ultimately plumetted down to 11 stone by the end of 2009. I separated from my wife and began properly examining my situation as a result of this.

Separation was the best thing that ever happened to me! This leech in my life was finally burned off of my body and i could live again. I started exercising at the very beginning of 2010 and met an amazing and wonderful new woman who is supportive, caring and equally very healthy! My weight has normalised at 12 stone and my body is gaining definition from the introduction of weights 2-3 months ago. I am still learning what the best things to do are, all the time in fact, but am taking a strong positive mental attitude with some sound advice and support and building for my goal. A defined and lean body and that all elusive six pack - which i know i can achieve! Every time i lack the willpower, or falter, i just look at the stretch marks on my stomach - retch - and carry on.

Hi Welshy,

brilliant story and you do look AMAZING now. but need your advice - i want to get to your 'after pictures' I don't want to compete just want a figure my bikini would be chuffed with.

I am alot bigger than you in the fact that I am 5ft8 and weigh about 12.5 stone (but I am heavier in general - my mum and me wear the same size clothes and she weighs 2 stone less-go figure), and am a comfortable size 14 would just like to get to 11 stone - have hit a brick wall with cardio - what weights worked for you??

Any advice from anyone else would be great too!!!!

For me, well been big most of my life, when 27 i did drop down to 80kg with a friend called eca, anyway soon as i stopped that it piled on.

Nine years later and getting towards 18 stone i was fedup of being large, i've always wanted to be lean only this time i REALLY wanted it.

I radically changed my diet, strict on carbs and most carbs would be wholemeal or slow release low gi carbs, throw in lots of fruit and veg and plenty of good fats, pb flax and rice bran oil for cooking.

Im now around 82 kg and feeling better for it, i now find myself having having to tweak my eating habits, i've introduced more protein to try and lean out a bit.

The downside is i have a bit of soft skin in places, i guess because im 36 and combined with years of being bulky it's taking a while.

I do cardio fairly regularly say 1-2 times pw for at least 2-3 hours per session, i can't honestly manage any more as my job is very physical so wipes me out if i overdo things.

Anyway i now fit into 32" jeans very nicely, hopefully i can lose the final bit of fat i have around my belly, it's proving troublesome but with thr right changes i 'should' be able to manage it.

Oh i meant to add im now around 80-82kg i don't honestly weigh myself because i don't have a scale, plus i know very quickly if i've done wrong.

My story is pretty boring and typical... been heavy all my life. Childhood was pretty stressing being fat. Then went into adulthood the same, except that it was getting continually worse with each year. I now have three children (ages 5, 10, 15) and with all the stuff that's part of raising 3 kids, all the activities, PLUS a really stressful and demanding corporate job (60+ hour weeks), the pounds just kept adding up year after year. Life was misery.

Starting Stats
Date: September 2009
Weight: 225 lbs (16 st)
Height: 5' 5"
Body Fat: 34%
Waist: 43 inches

Ending Stats
Date: March 2010
Weight: 155 lbs (11 st)
Height: 5' 5"  (<---- not sure why list this one twice  heheheh)
Body Fat: 10%
Waist: 29 inches

Before/After Pics

I've added muscle along the way, but the focus was really fat loss for me. Now I'm starting to focus on adding muscle now that I can actually see them. :-)
