When Your Owed Money, and Being Messed Around With......

What would you do?
 
Myself and my best mate were offered a days work labouring for $250 each, cash by this guy who my best mate knows of. We were told be ready for 8 and he'd pick us up at a pickup point. We waited there till closer to 10 am, he told us he was delayed etc all kinds of sh1t.
 
We done the work we were asked, at 3pm there was no more to be done as this guy hadn't the materials sorted out for us to do any more. He dropped us back and actually asked my mate for a lend of $100 as he said he'd forgot his bank card and would pay us tomorrow. 
 
This has gone on for two weeks, my mate has been trying to arrange to get our money, this guy makes excuses etc.... we all agreed to meet yesterday, he kept us waiting over an hour, told us how he'd won $1000 in the casino, we asked for our money, he gave my mate back the $100 he'd lent him and said he didnt have the rest as he'd taken out his limit that day. My mate verbally tore into him, fcuked him outta it, and said he better have the cash today, I stayed quiet.
 
Today I sent him a text told him to man up and pay what he agreed to pay, I was calm in the text, he didn't reply. Nothing like this ever happened before to me. We dont know exactly where he lives but he's thick enough to tag himself somewhere on facebook.
 
At what point do we accept our losses and track this guy down and let loose? We've played Mr.Nice guy too long now.

for $250, you dont let loose, easier said than done i know but its one day, you did 5 hours graft and i wouldnt think that time is worth any hassle you could get back. Just keep on at him about the money, tell him you wont forget and he has to find a way to pay you.
 
you wont get your money if you do let loose on him, probably just more hassle. That said a few years ago i'd have acted very differently. Problem is these things have a tendancy to take over ad you do things you wouldnt normally do. "feck dat"

You're right there, and its not even the amount, it the fact that you know in your head that he is trying to mug you off!!
I must admit, I have a tendancy to see red when I feel like someones mugging me off to my face like this.
 
Like the man says, keep your cool and just keep on at him for a while

give him another week if he still making excuses go round his house and take his tv xbox etc say he can have them back once the debt has been repaid.
i wonder how many other people he has done this to its just not on i hate people who make crap excuses just be straight with them

You can't just go down to someones house, walk in and take their stuff. If he calls the police, your in the ****. You have to be smart about how you do this and never threaten anybody via a text or phone call.
 
Keep pestering, if you dont get it, wait until you both cross paths and break his ribs.

Aren't you in Oz?  So this was a cash in hand job - I suspect he will continue to mug you off because at the end of the day what are you going to do?  You complain, you could have your working Visa revoked for cash in hand.  Good luck though, keep on it.

one of my 'mates' owed me a grand i went through all the different options, but in the end i let it go..  its only money in one hand out the other.  when i was younger i wd have gone mental but now fk it.
 
cut your losses 5 hours work is nothing and u know if u belt him you ll be nicked and up sh1t street and still 250 down

Aren't you in Oz?  So this was a cash in hand job - I suspect he will continue to mug you off because at the end of the day what are you going to do?  You complain, you could have your working Visa revoked for cash in hand.  Good luck though, keep on it.

 
That's right here in Oz, so within a few days of us landing we're offered cash in hand work for the day by this guy who's from a town 30 minutes away back in Ireland, obviously he saw an opportunity to take advantage. The visa thing does scare me alright.

Not exactly, we've an idea of the area but that's it. 
 
He's a builder, we were thinking of leaving it a few days then getting someone to ring him up and get him to come out and price a job. I want to take his phone and car keys and tell him he'll get them back when he pays what we agreed.
 
The other way of catching him is he's dumb enough to tag himself somewhere on facebook, last night he tagged himself at a bar across town, it was too far away for us to head in and confront him, but soon enough he'll be tagged somewhere close by.

is there a way of finding out when hes on a job somewhere? if so then you could turn up while hes working, make a scene, show him up in front of clients and people working for him. he may pay the money to get rid of you or he may not but it will prob damage his credibility and lose him both workers and clients

Thats what Id be inclined to do - for a couple of hundred quid its not worth risking getting arrested for, but if I could create a situation that would be awkward and embarrassing for him then Id do it. Cant be nicked for 'showing someone up as a cnut' can you?
