When moving house, do you take the curtains etc with you?

They aren't listed in the sale. The missus loves them and wants to take them with us - to a house where they possibly won't fit. What's the etiquette here? When I moved in, the vendors had left behind curtains, light fittings, carpets, etc and a broom.

Most dont but when we moved in they left carpets curtains ,blinds and some larger wardrobe that must have been too much too move, helped us out no end. Id prob take ours if we move as youd need something to tide us over while we got some new un's
Everyone has been in shape, but not everyone is IN shape, its about where your going not where you have been.

Are you saying you're supposed to take the curtains etc with you? What about the light shades?

Normally because they possibly won't fit the new place you leave them behind. There appears lately to be no proper etiquete these days though, I moved into a place a couple of years ago where I'd met the previous owners and they seemed ok when I first viewed the property, upon receipt of the keys and walking through the door all they had left was the walls the doors and the roof and some dog faeceas. Clearly I was mistaken and they were scum. Light bulbs, light fittings, light switches everything was taken, and guess what no proper forwarding address they had moved into rented and dissapeared from the new address soon after, after some hassle with their solicitors and the agents I gave up fighting as it would cost me more than the fittings were worth to get things sorted. Plus the missus wanted shiny new stuff anyway. Just leave what your contracted to leave, don't bother worrying otherwise, if the new owners loved your curtains so much it would be part of the agreement. Who knows they could in fact be terrible and your missus has no taste, horses for courses.

Essex aint that bad though with the hours I'm putting aint seen much of it yet! Definately a better breed of individual down there - bit more upmarket then 'boro....saw a bit in the Times though that 'boro was one of the top 8 places were house prices are expected to boom with millions being spent on getting blue chips to come and be based here...aint seen no evidence yet!

LMFAO Mellow. Every fourth city centre property is vacant and house prices are among the fastest depreciating in the country. PCC talks a good strategy but, cmon, even some of the councillors have been sent away for fraud. Give my reagrds to Mrs Mellow. See you at Muz's bash.

Who knows they could in fact be terrible and your missus has no taste, horses for courses. That is harsh. I notice in the small print of my estate agent contract it says not to leave anything not negotiated in the sale behind, including the cooker. I guess the argument from some pedantic ar5e would be that you hadn't vacated since some of your (helpful) sh1t was left behind.

Handed in a coursework covering this about a month or so ago. Everything in the house will be classed as either a fixture or chattel. There may be a list of fittings but these will legally be chattels and need to be contracted for if the buyer wants them left behind. Everything that is a fixture (so affixed to the land as to be immovable), you cannot take with you as it will be contracted for even if it isn't on the list; it is part of the land you are selling. Chattels must be contracted for. Curtains, light bulbs, switches carpets, tv, furniture etc are probably chattels. So, if they aren't on a list agreed between you and the buyers, you can take them with you, they're yours. You should be able to take the curtains and lampshades. In terms of etiquette, when my family moved into our house, they left curtains, light bulbs, carpets and even the fridge! But it's up to you. This did help us out for a week or two, but after that almost everything but the light bulbs were changed anyway. I'm guessing most people are like this? If you have to damage the house to remove the item, I wouldn't risk it. p.s. [disclaimer] I haven't had my coursework back yet. If I failed, the above is wrong, but I doubt it.
