Which eCommerce software and hosting?
17 March 2010 17:26
( permalink)
As I know a lot of MTers either run online shops or are involved in the design of such websites, thought I'd glean some information from you. This is for a small website, all the design done "in-house", I need some good, cheap eCommerce software and domain/host options please.

lol! How cheap? How many products do you have? How much bandwidth are you looking at? How many monthly sales are you expecting? What payment gateway are you planning to use? Do you want a full cart or a bolt on to a design? etc!

Most hosts have a cart that is easily set up can be modified to suit your own design. Zen cart seems to be the norm as it is reliable and easily modified. As for recommendations, I currently use in motion hosting and they have been OK to date with quick responses to my queries. Not the absolute cheapest, but not the most expensive either. I have tried the cheap end of the scale and have had many reliability problems so will do it any more :)

Do you want a full cart or a bolt on to a design? etc! £200 setup & ~£50pcm running costs. Bandwidth not too important to begin with. Monthly sales = ~20-40 in 6-12 months time. Not decided yet, ideally a proper bank one though, rather than PayPal crap. Full cart I think, but it needs to feel quite "British", so no use of the word "cart" haha.

I want cheapest of the cheap (I think) for now as this will be a second income and start of slow and small.

Sure am, Hull to precise (hey someone has to lol) TBH the cost difference is usually fairly small these days. When you get as far as a final decisions I would post your choice. There may be others here who have used it and are able to verify their reliability. Bear in mind that with a shop it can be a pain to move between hosts...

Rob me? He keeps knocking on my door with flowers & chocolates. I knew he was up to something LMAO. Mate if you are going to be doing some testing i have a reseller hosting package and can easily give you an account to test it all out with and save yourself any cash. PM me if you're interested and i'll sort you out with a login and one of my standard hosting accounts.
Awesome pic, but Tony you're not doing yourself many favours posting up tips on preventing the gag reflex and then a picture of a guy touching his toes - Ak

Fogot to add - it's a standard Cpanel Accelerated setup, with AgoraCart & OSCommerce plus Fantastico for other options. All you need is to buy a domain, but you can test it all out with just the hosting account.

essex_chris Re-add me? You deleted me Why i outta! I added you when you started that thread a while back, but I have a clean up every so often! I presume you host then and can offer me a package if I go ahead with it? A mate in the industry has recommended Magento as an eCommerce package.
