Will a seated barbell OH press help my military press? 14 March 2010 23:19 (permalink)
I am having great difficulty getting any heavier than the 25's on dumbell military press, so I have moved onto the smith machine and using the bar to do a seated press, so I can try and go heavier with the thought that i will be s afe lifting it.

Will this help my military press if I keep at it?

    i really dont like the smith machine, i think as it locks you into one plane of motion it places strain on your shoulders.

    if i was you i would swap to free bar seated or standing presses.

    but in answer to your question, yes, i would think it would help you with dumbell military presses.

      thanks for the reply.

      I will consider that. Yeh I see what you mean it places strain due to the fixed movement.

        yes it will help IME

        i used to use the smith for seated military presses and it allowed me to load a greater weight on the bar (after setting up a good mechanical position for your shoulders).

        It also allows you to work in a range you are often failing on.

        1st half = delts...only lift to just past the top of the head

        2nd half = triceps....only lift from just past the top of the head to lockout.

        I have done this in a power cage but the bar can freely move in the Z-axis (back n forth) and X-axis (side to side) which can take away the full emphasis of up and down (Y-Axis).

        i'm a mech engineer...geek speak sorry

        People shun the smith unneccesarily as when you just want to concentrate on explosive movements without fearing for energy spent balancing, it can help move past sticking points.
