What meet is this in feb? Don't worry if it's bench only. You've qualifyed for Brits next sept so not to big deal if you don't do a full meet in feb.

I still reckon it would be good to do another full meet before the Brits. Just have to keep you ears peeled for a suitable one. All English is good but generally in august and probably too near to Brits to be worth it but???

Junior nationals in bournemouth I believe mate. The situation as far as I can see it now is, wait 2 weeks and see how the knee is. If 2 weeks of no squatting/pulling is worth the improvement I get, then do the other knee. If not, dont and crack on with 8 weeks of training before the Feb meet.

I dont think its worth ****ing myself up in order to try and get a decent total at this one meet. My knees have massively held back my squatting for over a year and a half now and are thus ****ing my total up. If I want to shoot for over 600 come next sept then I need to be healthy for that.

Main motivating factor in the Feb meet is to prove to the uni that im worth putting on the high performance program. A decent placing at national U23 would definitely help with that I feel. Then again, I could sack that meet off and try and find one around May kind of time.

RE: Yeeeeeeaaah Buddy- dave's log - 22 December 2009 21:58

Load of assessments of the past years training been going on willy nilly all over the place so I thought id smash one in here...

Just had a flick through my journal for the last year. Seems Ive made some decentish progress, but Id really like to see more this year.
Im basically binning rugby this year, potentially forever. My knees have taken the ****ing piss all year, wrecked squatting, hampered deadlifting and given me recurring hip and low back issues. Plan for next year is to focus completely on PL. I think im going to stick with 5/3/1 since ive got no reason to move away from it.

Id say the weaknesses of my training this year have been:

1) diet whilst at uni - this is something I really need to sort out. Right now im 84kg. At the Uni comp I was 87 after eating a load. I either need to lift at 82.5 or I need to knuckle down and become a proper 90kg. By knuckle down I mean stop eating ****loads of takeaways and only 1-2 times a day and actually get the calories I need into me. When Im at home my nutrition is so much better and theres no reason why I cant do the same at Uni.

2) playing rugby - this will not be repeated

3) not doing enough of the comp lifts. This has largely been due to knee issues which have prevented me from doing any squat downsets or from squatting completely. Ive also not done enough benching.

The strengths have been:

1) Barely missed a session

2) got prepared for and lifted alright at a competition, despite a few **** ups

3) got a much better feel for how hard to push and when to push. I dont feel like ive gone over the top once the second half of the year, wheras previously I used to **** myself up all the time doing this

So...aims for this year...

1) lift pain free

2) total 600kg at a comp

3) bench the 150kg u23 British record

4) be a solid 90kg

Pretty simple. 1) and 4) are all I can really focus on at this very second, as my knee has stiffened up something stupid and I can barely walk. I will attempt to train tomorrow with LMC.

Lots of thanks to everyone who reads this log and for their help - LMC, Iain, No. 13 Jack, Fun Meter, Cricket, Badboy/sheeps. All your help and comments have bee much appreciated. Here's to ****ing **** up in 2010!

Mate if you can sort out your diet you'll smash your pb's. For someone who admmittedly eats like crap, yet still shifts decent weights... something must be going right.

I'm about 8-10kg heavier than you, eat like a horse and try and teach myself as much about nutrition as possible. However you completely dick my lifts. I'm sure if get your eating sorted you'll make disgustingly good progress.

Keep up the good work champ

Cheers mate, I have a workable knowledge of nutrition but for some reason at Uni I just cant get it to stick. I reckon if I nail this I ll make some real gains. Ive realistically got 5kg I can put on and stay at 90 so hopefully that weight will make a big difference.

Your training has come on leaps and bounds this year, keep at it and you ll soon catch me.

Ive never really totally gone for this PL thing before. Now literally my only focus outside of PhD work is getting as strong as ****ing possible. Looking forward to it.

I've not played rugby at all this season and have found it so much easier to train/eat and put weight on. I was going to go back next season but debating this now, besides next year is my Masters so want to put 100% into that.

Cheers for the compliment mate. I've read your journal for a fair while now and learnt alot from it, so I'll allow you to indulge in some self-gratification

Last year I think my bench went from 70 > 110, this year I've now stalled at around 125, want to smash this next year.
1RM squat has increased 40kg since Jan, though squatting for reps is still poor. 170 aim for this time next year.
As for deadlifting, not much of that but can't wait to get started again in May/June.

I've also bought a pair of #2 bands, hopefully be able to use them to boost my bench a tad.

A 510 total for Dec 2010 and I'll be a happy chappy.

First effort at training post roid knee

bit of rolling, stretch, mobility - worried about the knee so left a lot of stuff out

bench (feet elevated)

bar x 10
60kg x 5
80kg x 3
100kg x 3
*add foam roller*
110kg x 4
*take roller*
60kg x 3

This felt ****. Combination of not being able to keep an arch and being worried about the knee. I think i might do some floor pressing next time so I can totally leave the knee out of it.

Single arm DB shoulder press

10kg x 20
10kg x 20
10kg x 20

Lat raise

5kg x 10
5kg x 10
5kg x 10

Mini band pull apart

x 20, 20, 20

Lat pull down

40kg x 20
40kg x 20
40kg x 20

Palm away DB curl

10kg x 10, 10, 8

Just did something really. Starting to foam roll a bit more now, will do some later. Wont be training until the weekend now, just focusing on eating and getting this knee better. It feels good today.

Trained at home with LMC today. Sweet ****ing christ there are some ****s in that place. This ****ing douchebag tall guy swanned in and ****ed about for about half an hour, shooting people disapproving looks and acting straight up GANGSTTAAAAARRR. He then proceeded to waddle over to the squat rack, smash on the pussy pad, 40kg and started being a general dickhead, squatting to a depth with is too high to call high.

The arsehat gym instructor then fagged over and started explaining the ins and outs of squatting with a 5ft bar, coming up with such great insights as:

'dont lean forward or your back will arch'

'try to keep it in your legs by pushing your knees forward'

'i keep these light and really go the feeling'

Honest to god im glad I cant squat or deadlift at the moment because doing either in that place is a total cluster****. Some of THE dodgiest wankers alive inhabit that place. ****s the bunch of them.

As Iain says mate, I suck way too much cock and its started to really **** me up recently

haha

the actual problem is in both knees. I get savage pain in both patella tendons. Had it on and off for 2 years plus. If youve noticed ive never been able to squat for more than 3-4 months in a row without my knees interfering in some way. Id go so far as to say I havent been able to squat as id like to since 2006-7 (I hit 160 squat at 72kg and a 140 front squat in the same period back then). The pain makes me squat funny, means I cant run at all, cant walk downstairs, cant lunge, etc etc. I really hope I can sort it out because I want to get back to some decent, pain free, squatting for the first time in literally years.

Just saw on sugden that the Feb meet wont have a seperate unequipped division but that its fine to lift unequipped if you want to. This is a little unfortunate for me as obviously I dont lift equipped.

If im fit I will try and lift anyway because im attempting to get onto the Uni's elite sport program and proving that I compete at a national level is pretty fundamental to the application. Although hopefully the fact ive qualified for the senior nationals in sept will be enough to get me on there. Ideally id make the U23 team for the 2011 champs, only problems being:

1) im not strong enough
2) i wont be u23 in 2011
3) i dont lift equipped
4) im not strong enough

Seems that being strong is important to powerlifting. Who wouldve thunk it.

ME Upper

Warm-up

hockey ball all over breifly, stretch rotators, dislocates

Training:

floor press

bar x 10
60kg x 8
80kg x 3
100kg x 3
120kg x 3 - PR + 2 reps
125kg x 2 - PR + rep and weight
130kg x 2 - PR + rep and weight, also equals bench PR with 130.
100kg x 8

Seated MP

40kg x 5
50kg x 5
60kg x 8

Didnt like these at all so binned it

Single arm DB press

16kg 3 x 10

Plank 5 x 30s

Lat raise

8kg x 10
9kg x 10
10kg x 10

Happy with the floor presses, 120 x 3 was hardish, 125 x 2 was easy, got that filmed. 130 x 2 was a grind and cameraman missed it. 130 x 2 is the most ive benched too so this was a good PR.
