This bastard snow is beginning to get on my tits. Another day sans training and all the snowball throwing and digging has made my arm injury flare up again. I've been icing it on and off for the past 3 days but to no avail. I think another break might be on the cards.

I notice on the news that even though the gym was shut, they somehow managed to open it up as an emergency centre for stranded motorists:

Two rest centres have been opened in Petersfield - at the Taro Leisure Centre in Penns Place, Petersfield, and in the church opposite the Good Intent pub in College Street, Petersfield.

Awful. Just the same as when it was bad last time. It's quite painful now. It's definitely biceps tendonitis and it came about because I spent 2 days between Xmas and NY at work doing some drone-like data entry stuff which meant I was doing hundreds of repetitive movements with the mouse which gave my shoulder some major discomfort. A day later the biceps tendon was hurting.

Maybe it will go again like last time? Frigging hope so.

Shoddy lifting by all standards mate!! dead rep pr's are 190 x 10 and 200 x 7 to put that in context. I probably couldve done 10-15 today with 170.

My knees have been causing me problems for ages, always rugby related. Probably 2-3 years. The right one is worse than the left but basically i used to get ****ing bad patella pain, to the extent i couldnt walk down stairs, after i did any running for a week or so. Hence long periods of not being able to squat or deadlift as they hurt too much to do so. Had a roid jab in the right knee and I am not going to run anytime in the immediate future until i can sort the problem out, thus enabling me to lift!

Planning to reload the squat and dead fairly gently over a week or two, probably squatting x 2 a week. I ll take it gentle unitl i hit a 140 3 x 3 squat (end of next week maybe) and a 200 3 x 3 deadlift (week or two id imagine) then crack on as usual.

Lifting > running

Fair enough mate, ive had some bad knees too!
dislocated my left, and displaced my patella which in turn ground away my cartilidge for 2/3 years. All good now :) except they can ache when its cold, like now

couldnt agree more mate. running is for idiots. i squat in apt knee sleeves, i rate them a lot. might be worth you investing in a pair.

That was just for my left knee (cartilidge injured one)
Are "Apt" a brand?

I checked my sleeves, ive got a large and im 84-85kg at the moment, they fit fine.

Yeah knees feeling good FM, im a little unsure as to how hard to push after the shot though. I know steroids weaken the tendon and surrounding structures but Im not sure how much damage one shot will do and how long to pussy about for!

Im hoping that being able to squat and pull again will help me get up to my proper training/lifting weight. As the knee is okish again im going to start eating everything in sight as I can do some meaningful cardio again.

I know some people who have had it, and 2 weeks later lifted again. Probably depends how damaged the area is in the first place.

Repetitive motions tend to mess up things. Cycling or a massive amount of reps and / or frequency you'd probably want to avoid.

Remember when the cricket was on last year (ashes I think) and flintoff and the other one kept getting injuries. That had injections almost daily on ankles and knees and carried on limited training.

Yeah i left it 18 days after the shot before I trained today. The guy who did it said 2 weeks then you re fine. So i guess I ll do 1 or 2 more reload type sessions and then ****ing crack on. I cant be dealing with waiting a month to get back to training weights, it ll do my nut in.

This way it ll be a monthish before I hit anything like 80% on a squat, i reckon thats good enough for me.

So NE meets, but NE is always like fcking Newcastle. There must be about 3 powerlifters in the whole of this city, so no wonder there arent any comps anywhere nearby.

RE: Yeeeeeeaaah Buddy- dave's log - 09 January 2010 00:53

I need help, im getting a bit bored of this 5/3/1 lark after like 9 months on it. My squat has gone ???? (couldnt squat) - 170, bench 140-140, deadlift 230-245, so some progress and definitely lessons learnt, but I think I wanna do something closer to westside. What do u reckon?

I think it'd be a good move especially trying to keep the knee healthy (you can pick movements that don't aggrevate it instead of squatting every week putting it under strain).

That said, something I think that's very important for people around our strength levels that I didn't adhear to when I trained that way, was keeping the same assistance movements for a while. I think it's important for us non-elite lifters to keep consistant progress on atleast some lifts. I like switching the ME lift every week but I was switching damn near everything every week which I now think was a mistake.

If you do decide to follow a westside-esque program be sure to post it up

Cheers champ. Thats along the lines of what ive been thinking. If I am to make a change, it ll be along these lines:

ME Lower:

Squat/deadlift to a 5 or 3, single if its feeling good
deadlift/squat 3-5 x 5-10
GM 5 x 10
abs 5 x 10

(reasoning behind this- I ll squat for 2-3 weeks first and deadlift light second, then swap over. this way i ll always get to do both lifts but one will be easier/lighter and i ll be able to hammer the form and get the bar moving quickly).

DE Upper

Bench 5-8 x 1-3
military press 5 x 10
upper back stuff

Assistance lower?DE Lower?

not too sure about this. I could box squat a little wider than usual and go with something like 6-8 x 2-3, reasoning being i can use whatever stance i want as im not trying to mimic a squat here. Or I could do some RE type stuff. **** knows. I ll likely do some Oly stuff here too

ME Upper

bench/floor press/rev band/foam press 5 or a 3
assistance lift - extension, db press etc
upper back

This is roughly what I think id go after. This way I will still squat bench and dead every week. I may rotate deads with rack pulls occasionally if I feel like it. Id keep the main movement for more than a week initially I think, id judge it on whether I felt i could make progress on it the next week or not.

I see the advantages of this scheme being:

variety is the spice of life
I know how to get my bench stronger and 531 is not it
i think i have learnt from 531 what % i need to look at. i dont need to smash it up every week
i really feel id benefit from some DE work as i dont really lift anything fast at all, pretty slow on everything.

still thinking about it though...

Good to hear you were able to squat without knee pain. This bodes well for the comp in 5 weeks(?)
