another for car people

If you take your car to a garage when the engine warning light is on and they do a diagnostic check is there any form of print-out that the mahine gives you that you can have a copy of? The reason I ask is one garage did a check for me and after 12-15 phone calls from me to them have still not got back to me with a price for the work that needs doing, so I am going to take my custom elsewhere, but would have to pay for another diagnostic check at the new place, so really I want to save that money and get a copy of the old one. So is there any sort of print-out? and if so are you entitled to a copy of it one you have paid for the check? thanks

Depends where you took it. Most diagnostic machines in your back alley garages display a couple of codes on their LCD screen which are then recorded on paper. Main dealer garages are more likely to provide a printout. In any case, they should be able to provide you with the fault codes which you can then 'take with you' to another garage.

What vehicle is it? Vag group cars diagnostic faults are usually diagnosed with vagcom which does have the facility to print the fault codes. Imo if you are paying for a diagnostic check you are entitled to know the results.

I would ask them what fault codes were flagged. Your car uses an obd2 port and the codes are a letter followed by four numbers. Once you have the codes you can search them here to find the fault http://www.troublecodes.net/OBD2/ Hope this helps

isn't that generous of them - they've offered to plug in a laptop and press about five buttons, all for free!
