I've been "working out" for 10 yrs now, not building or cutting per se, just lifting weights and doing cardio.. am quite happy with my build (5,7" and 170 lbs @ about 10 percent bf)... anyway as part of a work "challenge" the "fit" people are going to run a 25K... I have no doubt i can do it, i just need some advice to train for long distance, but not lose ALL the muscle i've worked so hard to build... i know i will lose some, but any help would be appreciated, or similar stories shared would be great!

25k thats a weird distance, just over 15 miles. the best way is to just get out and get the miles behind you. supposedly whatever you run 3x a wk you should manage in one go,so if you do three 5 milers that should cover it,IMO adding a longer distance once a wk is going to help more.

I used to run in events like this before I started just on the weights. One of my aims that I wanted to do was lose weight and try and become skinny. Needless to say I never dropped below 103kg and was massive compared to the other runners. I just used to eat pasta until it came out of my ears and generally tried to eat fairly healthier. I also used to do a lot of spinning and did that more than going for runs.

You could try a google earch of half marathon training programmes and follow one of those (I think Runners World offer a couple of choices). If you can do a HM, the extra couple of miles will be easy enough on the day Best of luck!

I did a marathon in 2008 when i was 19. Its not too bad, its more psychological. Just start making your runs longer and longer. You could start by doing a few 5 milers a week then on a Sunday do a 10 miler, then the next week do a few 6 milers and then a 11 miler on Sunday. Find your pace, stick to it, work to your own ability, and ensure you stretch and rest right and it'll be fine! To keep your muscle it is all about your diet, you'll have to eat big to maintain the muscle. You won't realise yourself as much that your getting smaller but others will. Get an mp3 player + Arm strap if you don't have one. I found that i always had to have a form of juice when i was running over water but that was for the higher sugar levels.
