cardio advice when bulking 11 November 2009 21:18 (permalink)
Hi just after some advice on a cardio routine while i am bulking. Basically i want to lean bulk and try and get fiiter at the same time. The cardio routine i was thinking of following is below.

Tuesday
5 min warm up on runner
15 to 20 mins hiit
5 min cool down

Thursday
3km run as quick as possible

Saturday
same as tuesday

Im going to alternate between each different type of cardio. Is this ok? I dont want to over do the cardio incase it ruins my bulk but i really want to get fitter and keep fat to a minimum.

Cardio is a beneficial thing whilst on a bulk, you just have to be aware of two factors

      1) Eating for it, so that you remain in a hyper calorific state and
      2) Allowing yourself the time to recover so that you can train with the desired intensity when you hit the weights.

Get those two covered and you're smiling.

@ddp08 im wanting to do something similar. @ Drew price and everybody else reading, by your 2nd point do you meanl ike  Is 15-20 min run/cardio is good for warming up before doing weight training session or should cardio be kept for days with non weight training.

        Thanks

          Guidelines for cardio whilst bulking:

          Duration: 20 - 45mins
          Intensity: 60 - 85%
          Frequency: No more than 2/week

If you think about how your body is trying to adapt when bulking; attempting to maintain more muscle mass than it is used to. This is exactly the opposite to what cardio will make your body adapt to; attempting to get rid of extra fat and muscle mass that is not required. Above is, as I have experienced (and research has shown), the best compromise.

Eating correctly, I was still able to put on some size whilst maintaining my CV fitness. I followed a similar thing for a few months, and still passed Parachute Regiment selection having only been running once or twice a week for the few months leading up.

          Hope this helps!
