deadlifts...hand positions.. 12 February 2010 07:51 (permalink)
When doing deadlifts....I saw on the internet that you can put both hands in the normal over the top way, or one hand over and one hand under...I've tried both ways and sometimes it seems easier with the over/under way...but does it actually make a difference to the deadlift itself? and should I do the normal hold?......I can't do much weight on these ones cos my hands give way a bit...I do 35kg at the moment, purely cos of the grip thing....I have bought one of those powerball things which are supposed to help your grip and wrists and all that...I do it for about 3/4 mins on a night whilst loafing on the sofa.......errrrm...it flashes a blue neon light and makes me wanna arrest myself!..haha...ya know...police light and all that...durrrr....ok...quit the crappy jokes..lol.......dunno if it's helping but I'm willing to try anything....a guy told me about some wrist straps you can buy but the bloke in the weights shop said they can weaken your wrists cos you rely on them rather than your own body to do the lifting......what does anyone think please?...ta....

Use what grip you find comfortable and what you lift best with, the only difference it will make to the lift is if you are struggling with your grip, you won't lift as well!

Wrist straps I found useful when I was lifting heavy weights, don't use heavy enough weights now to need them, use them if you feel it will help and you sound like you are trying to strengthen your wrists too so shouldn't affect them.

I use a normal grip when i'm lifting light for high reps as this grip improves my grip strength and works my forearms too. If i am going very heavy i will use a mixed grip my normal grip would fail too soon with heavy weights.

On different note, I have one of those powerball things too. They are fun to play with and will maybe help the average non-lifter improve their grip strength a little but they are pretty much useless for someone who lifts as they will get a better grip workout from lifting heavy

I use a over and under grip but found the use of chalk made a huge difference to my grip. Wasn't my grip that was too weak but more the bar slipping.

The easiest way is to have both hands over - knuckles pointing away. When the weight gets high enough the bar will bend when lifted causing it to roll out of the hands, the mixed grip prevents this. That is all.

I use a mixed grip but i swap it about sometimes left hand knuckles foward
then right hand knuckles foward, only ever use straps for my top weight lift, i think its worth gaining grip strength, at the cost of a max lift.
