    They're fine.

Only problem could be over consumption of caffeine.  I drink Diet coke most days, but try to stick to soft drinks without caffeine such as sprite zero or 7up free, fanta zero etc.

But really, it's fine in realistic quantities.

I think most tend to say that there is too much in the way sweeteners etc!!

But to be honest I wouldn't unless that is all you are drinking

if you have to have soft fizzy drinks id go with coke zero or pepsi max and the like instead of the diet versions.

myself i stick to sugar free cordial and green tea.

i thought that the sweetner ( aspartane ? ) can play tricks with your system - mucking about with insulin , giving you crazings etc . Personally any think with Aspartame gives me the sh*ts so i avoid  !

The last three or four reps is what makes the muscle grow. This area of pain divides the champion from someone else who is not a champion.

                    caffeine's a bad thing?

                    Over consumption of it, yes.

With regards to causing cravings, I actually use it to do the opposite while cutting.  I take it instead of binging as it helps suppress appetite.

Does anyone have any empirical research regarding diet soft drinks being harmful is realistic quantities?
Or even Aspartame on it's own?

I'd say no, as no such research exists.

Diet Coke and Coke Zero are essentially the same thing. Coke zero was brought to the Market as Diet coke has an appeal to females more than males, think of their adverts. Coke Zero in a nice black can is seen more masculine. Same idea as pepsi max.
