SOME HEALTH GUIDELINES FOR RAMADAN

This article provides useful advice on how to avoid some common problems encountered in Ramadan. If followed, it would enable one to fast comfortably and enjoy fully the spiritual benefits of Ramadan.

During the holy month of Ramadan, our diet should not differ very much from our normal diet and should be as simple as possible. The diet should be such that we maintain our normal weight, neither losing nor gaining. However, if one is over-weight, Ramadan is an ideal time to normalise one's weight.

In view of the long hours of fasting, we should consume slow digesting foods including fibre containing-foods rather than fast-digesting foods. Slow digesting foods last up to 8 hours, while fast-digesting foods last for only 3 to 4 hours.

Slow-digesting foods are foods that contain grains and seeds like barley, wheat, oats, millet, semolina, beans, lentils, wholemeal flour, unpolished rice, etc. (called complex carbohydrates).
Fast-burning foods are foods that contain sugar, white flour, etc. (called refined carbohydrates).
Fibre-containing foods are bran-containing foods, whole wheat, grains and seeds, vegetables like green beans, peas, sem (papry), marrow, mealies, spinach, and other herbs like methie, the leaves of beetroot (iron-rich), fruit with skin, dried fruit especially dried apricots, figs and prunes, almonds, etc.

The foods eaten should be well-balanced, containing foods from each food group, i.e. fruits, vegetables, meat/chicken/fish, bread/cereals and dairy products. Fried foods are unhealthy and should be limited. They cause indigestion, heart-burn, and weight problems.

AVOID

Fried and fatty foods.
Foods containing too much sugar.
Over-eating especially at sunrise.
Too much tea at sunrise. Tea makes you pass more urine taking with it valuable mineral salts that your body would need during the day.
Smoking cigarettes. If you cannot give up smoking, cut down gradually starting a few weeks before Ramadan. Smoking is unhealthy and one should stop completely.

EAT

Complex carbohydrates at sunrise so that the food lasts longer making you less hungry.
Haleem is an excellent source of protein and is a slow-burning food.
Dates are excellent source of sugar, fibre, carbohydrates, potassium and magnesium.
Almonds are rich in protein and fibre with less fat.
Bananas are a good source of potassium, magnesium and carbohydrates.

DRINK

As much water or fruit juices as possible between sunset and bedtime so that your body may adjust fluid levels in time.

CONSTIPATION

Constipation can cause piles (haemorroids), fissures (painful cracks in anal canal) and indigestion with a bloated feeling.

Causes: Too much refined foods, too little water and not enough fibre in the diet.

Remedy: Avoid excessive refined foods, increase water intake, use bran in baking, brown flour when making roti.

INDIGESTION AND WIND

Causes: Over-eating. Too much fried and fatty foods, spicy foods, and foods that produce wind e.g. eggs, cabbage, lentils, carbonated drinks like Cola also produce gas.

Remedy: Do not over-eat, drink fruit juices or better still drink water. Avoid fried foods, add ajmor to wind-producing foods.

LETHARGY ('low blood pressure')

Excessive sweating, weakness, tiredness, lack of energy, dizziness, especially on getting up from sitting position, pale appearance and feeling faint are symptoms associated with "low blood pressure". This tends to occur towards the afternoon.

Causes: Too little fluid intake, decreased salt intake.

Remedy: Keep cool, increase fluid and salt intake.

Caution: Low blood pressure should be confirmed by taking a blood pressure reading when symptoms are present. Persons with high blood pressure may need their medication adjusted during Ramadhan. They should consult their doctor.

HEADACHE

Causes: Caffeine and tobacco-withdrawal, doing too much in one day, lack of sleep, hunger usually occur as the day goes by and worsens at the end of the day. When associated with "low blood pressure", the headache can be quite severe and can also cause nausea before Iftar.

Remedy: Cut down caffeine and tobacco slowly starting a week or two before Ramadan. Herbal and caffeine-free teas may be substituted. Reorganise your schedule during the Ramadan so as to have adequate sleep.

LOW BLOOD SUGAR

Weakness, dizziness, tiredness, poor concentration, perspiring easily, feeling shaky (tremor), unable to perform physical activities, headache, palpitations are symptoms of low blood sugar.

Causes in non-diabetics: Having too much sugar i.e. refined carbohydrates especially at suhur (sunrise). The body produces too much insulin causing the blood glucose to drop.

Remedy: Eat something at sunrise and limit sugar-containing foods and drinks.

Caution: Diabetics may need to adjust their medication in Ramadan, consult your doctor.

MUSCLE CRAMPS

Causes: Inadequate intake of calcium, magnesium and potassium foods.

Remedy: Eat foods rich in the above minerals e.g. vegetables, fruit, dairy products, meat and dates.

Caution: Those on high blood pressure medication and with kidney stone problems should consult their doctor.

PEPTIC ULCERS, HEART BURN, GASTRITIS AND HIATUS HERNIA

Increased acid levels in the empty stomach in Ramadhan aggravate the above conditions. It presents as a burning feeling in the stomach area under the ribs and can extend upto the throat. Spicy foods, coffee, and Cola drinks worsen these conditions.

Medications are available to control acid levels in the stomach. People with proven peptic ulcers and hiatus hernia should consult their doctor well before Ramadhan.

KIDNEY STONES

Kidney stones may occur in people who have less liquids to drink. Therefore, it is essential to drink extra liquids so as to prevent stone formation.

JOINT PAINS

Causes: During Ramadan, when extra salah are performed the pressure on the knee joints increases. In the elderly and those with arthritis this may result in pain, stiffness, swelling and discomfort.

Remedy: Lose weight so that the knees do not have to carry any extra load. Exercise the lower limbs before Ramadan so that they can be prepared for the additional strain. Being physically fit allows greater fulfilment, thus enabling one to be able to perform salah with ease.

good read, i take my hat off to people who can combine training with diet changes such as this - i have added a link to a site that IMO is going to be the new atkins/GI fad etc amongst the slimming masses (ie general public rather than BBs) i think it has some place in such 'diets' althoug im sure it has some flaws somewhere!!

thx for the post but I got a few q's.

Why shouldn't we over eat at sunrise ? Since we're gonna be fasting all day long then we might as well just eat as much as possible so we don't shift to a catabolic state that fast.

What do you think would be best right before sunrise ? Beans, Milk, eggs and yogurt ?

Why isn't it possible to gain in ramadan ?

Why is it best to lose fat in ramadan and how do you do that ? I got 4kg fat I'd like to lose, is it possible ?

thought i might just jump in and impart my limited knowledge to migs' questions

from what i understand a persons body can only digest a certain amount at one time - eating too much at sunrise doesnt mean your body will spread the food over the course of the day - it will start digesting there and then and any excess that you dont use will probably be stored as fat - anyone who disagrees feel free to correct me

so basically with a twelve hour fast your body will probably turn catabolic at some point of the day anyways

also, from what i understand, in order to gain you have to be eating regularly so your body has the energy and protein stores to continually rebuild. twelve hours without any protein is half a waking day. its probably like building a house without any bricks, it cant be done!!!

because its nigh on impossible to gain in this month it probably would be best to focus on the cutting up side instead. thats what i will be doing - and will probably gain it all back on eid - lol

newest, I'd still try to grow though and If I couldnt then it wouldn't be that much of a problem. Ive already been away for a really long time and I need to get my weights back to what they were. I don't care how much I do put on but Im just hoping that I just do something instead of watching myself get smaller.

Eating too much in any sitting would cause that cuz theres a limit, I was just curious if there was something special about sunrise or so. Maybe having a bad impact on fasting. I limit my protein consumption in a single sitting to 60-70g protein then eat again after 2-3hrs. My plan for sunrise is to eat the things that last the most: Fava beans and dairy products. I might up the protein to 80 or 90 at sunrise and hope that my body will be able to use the long lasting ones and if it doesnt then that wont be a problem. If you can cut the 12 hrs down to 6hr of catabolism then that shouldnt be bad, you'ev got the rest of the day to stay in anabolism which theoretically sounds logic to me.

Hi Guys,

I was wondering what some of you's eat before sunrise (to start your fast)?

I have cooked myself chicken breasts, Beef mince kebabs, but cannot bring myself to eat much at that time.

I have therefore ordered some Reflex Progen as i was thinking that it would be MUCH easier to drink a meal replacement in milk so that it is digested slower, plus it has oats.

And i could maybe have a bowl of Muesli as well.

What do you guys think?

Upon breaking my fast i would have a protein shake in water followed by 200ml of water mixed with 1 and half scoops of Reflex instant mass (also containing oats, as i would be on the train my way home from work) and then when i get home i would have 2 chicken breasts or beef mince kebabs with some complex carbs.

Any help and suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

Ramadam mobarak to all, i'm fasting and i'm quite worried about losing muscles part of it is because i don’t have a lot of it :)
can someone recommend a good protein supplement, i'm quite reluctant on having anything "artificial" but i really dont
have a choice as i do not have enough protein in my diat. and how about glutamine does it prevent or at least help decrease the effect of a catabolic state, is it a stariod?. if yes does anyone know of any good brands and when to take them.

Wen i wake up at sehri (sunrise) i have 3 scoops of Reflex Instant Whey and casein in water and a massive bowl (approx 120g) of Redy Brek cereal, it so liquidy that i actually just drink it out the bowl. It helps prevent the hunger pangs durin fastin hours... Had a paratha yesterday and i was absoultely starving the whole day, oats r a good idea for sunrise definately.

BTW reflex instant whey (good value for money) and no i dont work for em lol.

Firstly-Thankyou to the mods in regards to making this a sticky.

When i wake up for sehri (mon-fri) i drink/eat:

700ml Water with 10g glutamine
100g Bran flakes +extra sultanas with an extra scoop of whey in the milk
450ml milk+40g MPC+20g Whey
2.5 egg ommlette(sp?)
Around 800ml-1L of water with glucosamine+vit C tabs


On the weekends i go to sleep for another 4-5 hours after sehri so i drink/eat:

700ml Water with 10g glutamine
Protoplex/Met-rx with extra 20g whey+20g MPC
2.5 egg ommlette
around 700-800ml water with glucosamine+vit C tabs

Oh yeh forgot to ask. I know the basic restrictions/laws but can someone please tell me if it is permissable to have an ephedrine pill at sehri? As toxins should not be in the body, but unsure as to an E/C/A is a toxin. Jazza-akh-allah-khairh

Good question adil, I do not think there would be a problem with it although I am no sheikh but its just like taking a prescription drug ie if ur a hypertensive patient you would take your drugs at sunrise and try to fast. You might wanna ask the council or the mosque near you.

i bought glutamine from H&B its 500mg and it says take one a day and do not exceed dosage, but it seems to me that 500mg is not much i would prefer to take on at sehri and after workout (an hour and half after iftar)....... i'm going to GNC today see if i can get my hands on some whey protien, is that enough, i workout 3 times a day with 2 day split routien (dont know if it is correct though)
day 1: chest, triccept, back, bicepts
day2: shoulder, legs, ABS

knigh7, they say that he recommended dose for glutamine is 10-15g so thats 20tabs of ur glutamine a day. Check the supplements area, theres a thread about glutamine.

i am flopping because when i dont eat all day the metabolism slows and then when i eat at aftari i feel bloated

i was losing more weight when i was eating regularly before ramadhan

oh well - never mind

can always resume training after this month

It should be a bit easier to train from Sunday onwards.I dont end up getting home to about 7;30 or so.I have another meal at about 8pm or so.I have just been doing chins and other bodyweight exercises.

This is a really good post and I didnt know it was on this board.

Every year I put on some muscle and lose a quarter stone during Ramadan (NEVER more than that) and thats always pure muscle. I think the reason most of us faster's dont lose fat is that the increased catabolic state (whilst being awake for long hours and not feeding as per regular feeds) causes a sort of 'fat conservation' process, ie. the body starts to scream for every calorie it can lay it's hands on!

I've found that eating very moderate carbs but high 'good' protein such as grilled chicken or red meat is excellent for pre-fast meal in morning, wont add fat and will aid recuperation from the workouts as per normal. I've also learnt eating tons of food (to sickness levels,lol!) at the 'break-fast' in the evening also is quite fattening. So I've decided;

a) eat same amounts of meals as you normally would-refraining from the same evils i.e fatty fried foods sugars etc. (except fruits)

b) EXPECT to lose 'some' muscle but mainly concentrate on not getting any fatter and not over eating.

c) Your body WILL adjust to the new routine so stick it out, you will be shocked at how well it preserves muscle-when you consider how scared you are that you'll lose more than half etc.

Nice thread.

i usually just have one bowl of Warm milk and 100g of oats.

I train 2-3 hours after fast breaks. Strength has totally dissappeared(not that I had much to begin with ).
On sat/sun i train 90 mins before fast breaks and try not to sweat much. been doing alot of ab work. defitely working, i can actually see a six pack behind the fat. Arms and shoulders are defintely looking more ripped too.

It's actually obligatory to awake just before dawn for the niyat (making the formal intention to fast), no 2 ways about it.

Us BBuilders can use that to our advantage, i.e. make a quick protein shake, drink it up, brush your teeth and back to bed after niyat. 5mins tops, so why not?
