Becoming a professional boxer, starting out at 22 12 November 2008 03:06 (permalink)
Do you think its possible? I've had my punchbag for 6 months now. I love punching the **** out of it, and defnitely have naturally fast hands, how fast im not sure... also naturally strong and fast..

Is it possible, at 22 with no boxing "technique" to learn it at that age, with the right mentality, fight professionally?
What advice would you have .. start boxing at my local club? that it?

hitting a bag has little to do with getting in a ring. you need to get to a boxing club. its very hard work to get to pro level.
joining a club is a very obvious start and then see if you are suited to it beyond "punching the ***out of it" on a punch bag.

anythings possible mate if you set ya mind to it.

but the gulf between punchin a bag and being pro is like playin 5  a side and playing in the premireship.  no comparison what so ever

get down to a club and give it a go for 6 months.  if you are  a natural you should then be able to spar effectively with everyone else.  id suggest if after this time your not pickin it up then its not for you.

i'd say your going to be swimming against the tide but if you commit 100% i dont see why not.

You'll be up against guys who have sparred and trained as kids so unless you have natural god given talent.

Get in there and give it a go.  Not too many people enjoy/like getting punched in the face and after a few head shots you'll know for sure if it's something you want to do or not

"Punching the sh1t" out your bag = doing keepy-upy's in the street
Fighting as Licensed Pro = Proffesional Footballer

Hope that analogy makes sense. With all due respect Im sure you feel fast, storng & powerful onur bag, but I reckon if you go to a club you will be brought down to earth with a bang!

Join a club asap (and dont metion you want to go pro or you will get laughed at lol), train there 5 nights a week, do running, condition work and weights outside the boxing gym, get a decenbt amateur record, and then maybe you will get somewhere, but it will take an insane amount of effort and you will have to have a decenbt amount of natural abilty as well

cucumba, with the right mentality? it doesnt sound lik u hav got the right mentality after readin that stupid post, i think its disrespectful to pro and amateur boxers as they know wot they hav 2 go through 2 try and mak it and all u hav done is beat up a bag and think u can b a pro boxer, are you serious? no amateur experience or nothin, jus keep bashin up that bag.

yes its a harsh response but boxing, especially pro boxing is a harsh business

At 22 you could make a pro boxer. I started thai boxing at 25 after doing a year of boxing when I waas 14ish. I done thai for 2 years and I have been boxing for about a year now, I will be 28 next month, I believe and my coach does to that I will turn pro. If I fight about 10 times a year, for the nxt couple of years I will have a respectable amatuer record and get experince. I want to turn pro in a couple of year even though I will b ehitting 30. I am heavyweight so age isnt such a big barrier. I aint going to be the next Ali but I will get a few pro fight under my belt.

Thats a bit like saying I want to drive formular one but should I apply for my provisional license, LOL
Although not always the case, most pro's have some amateur experience. But as Odog said anything is possible, just get yourself down to the local club and see what it feels like. It can be a real wakeup call taking your first punches in the face and body and will either make or break you. Perseverance is the key to success tho mate so give it a go and good luck.
If you only do what you've always done then you'll only get what you've always got!

If I was 22 and starting boxing I would be aiming to be pro a for 25/26, I dont think that is unachieveable if you are dedicated. Nobody says he wants to be a world champ but you could make a journeyman.

You could also fight unlicensed, which is Pro if by pro you mean you make money. Its quite well organised (nothing like unlicensed you see in films lol), some of my friends get a £500 purse, plus £5 for every ticket they sell.
Some come away with £1000-1500 for a fight. Theres not really any proper weight categories (my m8 at 9 stone fought a ladd at 11 and a half stone and spanked him lol)

Look up EBF boxing, Tim Witherspoon was 'fighting' (if you can call it that) on the last one I went to see. Unlicensed 'pro' is certainly acheivable in a few years tho. (Some people fight at these events every week for the purse and pretty much crumple/dive the 1st time they get hit, but its a living I suppose lol)

I don't think it as impossible as it was 10 or 20years ago as you see a lot more boxers peaking in their 30's.

Look at how many top professional boxers you see these days that are over 35.

Monte Barrett was on Setanta yesterday and he did not take up boxing until he was 21 or 22.

Another heavyweight prospect Joe Mesi was the same age when he started boxing.

A big shot is a little shot who kept shooting.

                                ditto the above.
its easy to talk about bullfighting with fighting bulls
get down a locla gym and get some sparring in see how it goes then

Most pro's have fought since school boy thats a lot of years getting the movements spot on and instinct,as said you can try unlicensed but then again you can go up against a total tool or a retired pro
Everyone has been in shape, but not everyone is IN shape, its about where your going not where you have been.

Fighters typically peak in their late 20's to early thirties, though life expectancy in the ring does look to be on the increase.

If you have the talent, you can do it, but you'd need more committment and dedication than talent. Most boxers your age will have had 10 years of training on you, instinctive skills, ring craft, sparring experience and a fantastic level of fitness. Heavy bags do not fight back, yet you can never beat one.

Have a go but be prepared for a very steep and gruelling learning curve.

But in reality mate, i decided i wanted to start training for mma at 18 and few people told me err impossible even at 18 , you left it a bit late, but i train like 3 times a week for 2 hours technique and 3 times a week in the gym, you got to be dedicated and but your absolute effort in.
