The 40 Plus Journal Part 2 - The Search For Strength - 04 December 2008 23:54
Welcome to the new journal.
I'll be training for strength and hoping to enter a Power Lifting comp in 2009 whilst keeping my weight around 82 - 83 kg.
The British qualification for my age at that weight unequipped is 460 kg so that's the first big goal I'll be working towards, of course there will be several smaller goals along the way.
I stopped drinking alcohol on New Years Day and used the 2 MT Shape Up comps to sort out my diet, drop some weight and feel happier about the way I look.

November 2007 16 st 4 lb                                                            November 2008 12 st 6 lb

Tonights training

Squats 1 x 10 bar only, 1 x 5 60 kg, 1 x 5 80 kg, 5 x 5 100 kg
Hyper Extensions 5 x 8 BW only
Rope Crunches 1 x 12 12 plates, 1 x 12 13 plates, 1 x 12 14 plates, 1 x 12 15 plates, 1 x 7 15 plates

I'll be doing Hyper Extensions at least twice a week to strengthen my lower back, it's been my weakest link for far too long now.

No IB, thats at 82.5k, Masters1.

At your weight of 122k, it would be 630k to qualify.

Good luck with the goals 40+

Your progress in the last 3 months has been impressive mate. I'll be following this journal for sure!

So is 460kg the combined weight of squat, bench and deads?

I've been very impressed with your progress too mate.
I imagine it must be more difficult to gain weight when you're naturally slim built than it is to lose the lard when you're a fat fcuker like me, so well done.

That's right that's the combined weight.
A 'typical' 460 split would be something like 160/100/200 although it can vary.
I'm on my way with the other 2 but the squat holds me back, working on it though.

I think its hard where ever you're at. None of it comes easy as I'm sure you know.

160/100/200 is some heavy going especially if thats to qualify. What are your current PB's in those lifts then? It might be helpful to list them on your first post and then update when new ones are acquired. It'll make it nice and easy for people looking in to track your progress.

I'll certainly be logging weights but I think it will be a while before I see any PB's if I'm to stay at this weight.

For me it will be either BAWLA or GBPF Bill.
I've not gone as far as that yet but obviously I'll need to at some point soon.

Sorry i was looking at the link on OGs mail, the English Powerlifting fed, saw that the totals seemed a bit higher than you said. It was only after i posted that i went back and realised i was looking at the equipped section, while you were talking unequipped. Whoops! For me (at 95ish kg) the total would be 520kg, which would be bench 130kg, squat 180kg, deadlift 210kg. Not impossible but still well beyond my current 115/150/200

Cheers AK

I would say my dead and bench are ok compared to my squat, probably because my squat is sh1te
I benched 107.5 tonight and I could probably dead 170 but I really need improve on both of these.

I've had a few days off mate with lots of sh1te food, but went back to training last night.
I'm looking forward to training for strength, it will be different that's for sure, just need to keep the diet in check.

Nothing stopping you competing though Bill, I fully expect to be competing before I reach the 460.
I may look into equipped at some point down the line, see how we go.

Tonights training

Bench Press 1 x 10 bar only, 1 x 5 60 kg, 1 x 5 80 kg, 1 x 5 90 kg, 2 x 3 100 kg, 1 x 1 105 kg, 1 x 1 107.5 kg
Dips 5 x 5 BW + 60 lb

The lower volume and not being wet through at the end of the workout will take some getting used to.

Diet can be aloud to slip once in a while. We both know that the one thing that will hamper your progress the most is the booze but you have battered that aswell.

I hope to have made the same strides as you in a years time mate

If you can keep off the beer mate you'll find the other things in your life start to fall into place. If you look at your before pics from the shape up I'd say you were about where I was this time last year, if I can do it anyone can.

You too Malc.
I have to say I did agree with the announcers comments when he called you Cameron (now that I know what he meant), I think you've got a bit more in the tank yet. You made it look easy.

Tonights training

Leg Press 1 x 10 no weight, 1 x 5 40 kg, 1 x 5 80 kg, 1 x 5 120 kg, 1 x 5 160 kg, 1 x 5 200 kg, 5 x 5 240 kg
Hyper Extensions 1 x 10 BW only, 5 x 5 BW + 10 kg
Seated OH Press 1 x 10 bar only, 1 x 5 5,6, 7, 8, 9 plates, 1 x 3 10 plates
Deads 1 x 10 bar only, 1 x 5 60 kg, 1 x 5 100 kg, 1 x 5 140 kg, 2 x 3 140 kg

I had every intention of doing a FKAOG style workout tonight and doing 5 x 5 Squat, Bench and Deads but the gym was busy and I couldn't get on everything. Also my legs were like jelly when it came to doing the deads after having done leg press, I don't think it's for me.

Tonights training

Deads 1 x 10 bar only, 1 x 5 60 kg, 1 x 5 100 kg, 1 x 5 140 kg, 1 x 2 160 kg, 1 x 1 180 (f), 1 x 1 170 kg
DB Rows 5 x 5 100 lb
Hyper Extensions 5 x 5 15 kg
EZ Bar Curls 1 x 5 bar + 20 kg, 25 kg, 27.5 kg, 30 kg, 32.5 kg

Disappointed a little, I've eaten well lately (a little too well) and felt good warming up, I expected to get the 180 then move onto a PB next week. Maybe best to take it a bit slower and go for 175 next week. It was nice to see 4 plates a side though.

Good going on the deads mate especially if you've been ill. Don't under estimate how much a bout of illness can sap strength. Keep up the good diet and you'll hit the PB soon when your body is recovered fully.

Tonights training

Squats 1 x 10 bar only, 1 x 5 60 kg, 1 x 5 100 kg, 1 x 3 120 kg, 1 x 1 130 kg, 1 x 1 135 kg, 1 x 135 kg (f), 1 x 5 100 kg

I got to the gym at 6.35 not knowing they've decided to close at 7.00 for the next 2 weeks so had to cut it very short.
135 is the most I've squatted but I'm not having it as a PB because the form was so poor, it was deep enough but my lower back was terrible.
No time to do the hyper extensions or abdominal work I had planned.
