You cant really compare treamill / road and track runs. Even road v road is going to depend on the individual course.

On a 400m track I'd say sub 8 mins was decent.
No biggie like, there are a lot worse things for you than using steroids, I mean I probably shouldn't have been smoking crack or getting into bar fights at your age TBH  - drab4

So I'd extrapolate(sp) that to about 8mins 30 for 1.5miles which I reckon is good on the road.

Totally agree.  You cannot compare treadmill to proper running.

As said 10.30 is the slowest army time allowed for standard troops.  Take longer than 10.30 and you fail, simple as.  It certainly wont guarantee you a job in the SAS, maybe the SEALS though haha

Yeah ok fair point with the SEAL debate.  Ill try and give them an argument they can actually win :)

I can run amazing times and distances on a tread mill compared to what I can really run in reality.  Think tread mills are great for returning after injury and def better than doing nothing.  But real running is far far harder even if it is flat.

How long you been running mate to get a 10 min time?  Can I ask your height and weight and age also? Interested for uni assignment I am doing.

Sorry i think people misunderstood, my aim is to get below 10 mins....ive not timed myself yet....but i reckon im at around 12-13 mins at the moment. Ive only just started running again recently as ive had pluerisy since october and only just got rid of it at the end of december. Im also losing weight aswell as i have alot of work to do hence my name onefatidiot, my journal is in my sig.

27 , 5ft 11 and coming in at 17 stone at the mo , looking to get down to 14 stone i reckon and get sub 10 mins on the 1.5 and good times on the 3 mile aswell.

Re:1.5 mile run challenge - 15 January 2009 19:13
British forces are better but then we have to be.  We are a very large world power with a super small population and armed force.  Our standards therefore have to be extremely high as we cant waste one person.  America on the other hand have a huge population.  Its a quality v quantity thing I think.  Anyhow, dont want to side track your thread.

If you can get your time down to sub 10.30 then you can boast your Army fit.  This could be a great goal for you dont you think.  Also 30 seconds easier to achieve than your current goal.

Think you should change your name to onefat determined to get fit person. This would suit you better!

Any naturally fit person can be fit.  It takes balls however to run your life around and these are the people I respect most of all.  PM me when you reach 10.30

to be better than you have to be is always the best way ,thats the way i want it

I will reach sub 10 , dont know when but it will happen

americans are always the same , everything has to be bigger and better and definetly quantity over quality. However their narrowminded mentalily doesnt usually stretch beyond the boundries of their own country. Nothing exists to them beyond america...well not all of them just a majority :-)

11.15 minutes with shin splints, was not fun at all!

Btw 10.30 minutes is only required for infantry in the British Army, for corps it is 11.30 minutes.

And 10 minutes is definately not good enough for SAS selection.

@ Makenzi

Cant believe how much the standard has dropped since I left in the 1999.

You had to run 3 miles then.  First 1.5 mile out as a squad and then straight after 1.5 mile back in best effort but anything over 10.30 was a fail.  And that was for everyone, chefs, postmen, clerks ect ect

Now just 10 years later you get an extra minute to do  half the distance!!!

Yeah this was always the case with age and rightfully so.

U29 then 30-34 then 35-19 then 40+

Times didn't vary than much though. You got around an extra 30 secs each bracket approx.

12.5 minutes for the first 1.5 mile of a 3 mile run is good enough for sas selection.

If your talking about getting onto selection that is open to the whole British army probablies.  However, if that is your best time you will fail miserably very quickly.  Even a PTI needs to have a far better time than this.

The SAS take on a lot from the parachute reg much like the SBS take on much from the marines.  There standards is way higher than 1.5 mile in 12.5 mins. EG one of the Royal Marines end tests is in full kit 9 miles in 90 minutes. That is ten minute miles in boots, fully loaded burgan, gat, webbing etc etc. This is what your up against for SAS selection and they only take the very best.  12.5 mins I could do now as a civvy and I am not a good runner by any means!

So the SAS get 12.30 to run 1.5 miles and the RLC chefs as previously mentioned get 11.30??  Somethings wrong here as the chefs get 1 min less than the SAS.

The physical tests for our royal marines are far harder than the US seals.

I always wonder why the americans dont just use Jack Bauer (from 24) for every situation and disband the whole US forces saving their ecconemy trillions a year.
He can single handedly do anything without breaking a sweat or getting dirty even.

Royal Marines are awesome fella.

The last 4 tests they have to do cannot be passed unless your super human!!

A ridiculously high up assault course. Fall off and risk being maimed! that simple.
Next day they crawl through tunnels and nearly drowned in a set time.
Next day they yomp over tough terrain with a small Volkswagen on there back in full kit 9 miles in 90 mins.  Thats a piss take of a pace even bollock naked never mind in boots, helmet, gat, burgen etc etc
Then the next day (keep in mind thare already worn down and blistered up from the former three days) they have to yomp 30 miles in 8 hours over very challenging terrain in Dartmoor I believe.

I bow down to anyone who has passed this course.  I shake hands and give respect to anyone who has a good crack at it yet fails

This is what I mean when people mention SAS or SBS.  They are light years ahead of the Marines of Paras who are allready super human and damn right awsome!!

Im ex UK forces and know only to well the standards of the SAS having many extremely fit mates fail selection within the frst week.

If 12.5 mins was the standard I could pass.

Anyhow, I know your only joking around mate.

Thanks for the respect for our armed forces.  Its appreciated.

When you say Trooper do you mean a SAS/SBS trooper?
Or is it just an American word for general squadie?

Its not just the extreme fitness to get in the SAS/SBS mate. They actually get physical and mental torture during selection to see if they break easy.
Lets just say this part of selection more than breaks most human rights legislation.
So as well as being uber fit, your mental fitness has to be even greater.
Of course you have to be part of the British forces for two years before you can even apply

Im just not that super human.

I HATE this forum software!! The old one was miles better!!  Even my spell checker wont work on this!!

As a punishment, you will all have to put up with my pants spelling as I refuse to keep cutting and pasting to MS word and back.
