When i get time i'll try go through it and run a few updates, i'm sure products have no doubt risen (and perhaps even fallen) since i put it together but hopefully inflation just put it all evenly up but i doubt it.

m&s..yes m&s are doing half price on tinned chilli con carne its low fat and abour 35g protein for 1.30 or so. and its beaut too.  you may need a well ventilated work area and house after eating the stuff..plays havoc!

Great info RichINS!! My best protein buy is Cottage cheese from Lidl for a 250 gr pot £0.49, excellent value and a nice taste too, I can't bear the Tesco version!

I like the Linessa cottage cheese in Lidl, cheap too.

the only prob im guessing its them mince with 22g or so of fat :(,
why is lean mince never cheep lol.

I've done a little price research looking at some common protein sources (Quark, meats, Soya mince) and graphed them. This graph was mainly for my use, but thought sharing it will help you guys save some cash and help vary your protein intake. Protein prices have increased significantly since i made my last graph, suprised by some items! Soya mince & Tuna being the cheapest, forgot about eggs & cottage cheese. ASDA Smartprice Natural Low Fat Cottage Cheese (200g) = 77p/50g protein serving. Flavours will increase price significantly!  i dont know, i am trying to find ways i can keep a good diet and cut down costs, as im a poor student.
cant seem to do it enough while maintaining good meals that are also good nutrictionaly.
i think im goign to have to eather lose out on cals, make the cals more dirty or eat realy plane food :(

while i dont like tuna that much (have it now and again) i am making use of sainburys basics eggs, they are suprisingly good seem very fresh and are a good size (£1.85 for 18 eggs)
chicken i cant seem to find anyware that dose it cheep enough, some places you can get it at just under £4 a kilo but not much better than that.
while you can get some quite cheep beef mince, its aways full of fat.

i wonder what soy mince tasts like? dose it taste like meet? will it replace beef mince in normal meals?

Plus anything else that you use like carb sources, nuts etc on top of that. It isnt as hard as a lot of people make out.

Also TVP is cheap from tesco which can also add bulk to your protein intake.

Ive seen that. Barely any protein in it though and extremely high in fat. I prefer Sainsburys Basics mince, you get more bang for your buck.

what sort of carbs you having with you meal

Usually something like Lentils which are very high in protein. Or some other bean.

I use cornmeal a lot as well and make polenta.

they are very good prices, i do eat alot of eggs, but surly the mince and corned beef is very fatty.
can you give the values per 100g please.

i have shoped in sainburys and havent seen this mince, might be because the sainburys near me is quite small or is it in the frozen section?

just looked myself online and the values for the basics mince are:
per 100g
cals: 228cals
protein:18g, Fat:17.3g(7.4g saturated)

just wondering with the high level of fat will it not be unhealthy? i gues it will be fine aslong as you balance the rest of your diet about it but its still quite high in sat fats.

I dont see anything wrong with sat fats in people who train with weights.

Mix it with 100g of soya mince and an egg and you have a pretty decent meatloaf.

Went to farmfoods at the weekend - some good prices on meats and fish.

8 pork chops ~1.1kg, ~£5
Turkey crown ~2kg, ~£8

Can't remember the tuna/prawn prices, but they seemed good. Will see what quality is like

Avoided the "chicken breast" - 80% meat.. lol!

Try going to makro, you can buy 5kg of chicken breasts for £17.00. For eggs go to eggnation from google and buy 6 litres of egg whites for £20.00 - (thats 33 egg whites per litre x 6 = 188 egg whites for £20 - bargin.

The packs aren't cheap but a seafood selection from Tesco has about 50g protein in each with pretty much nothing else. IIRC all the major supermarkets do a similar deal.

The ones with prawns, mussels and squid. They're £5 for 2 or £3 each.

Added mine into 1/2 pack of stirfry mix (~£1 .: 50p portion) with some seasoning. plenty of protein and no more than 400 cals.

Hey all, some fantastic ideas and advice in this thread :) going to look into buying some TVP myself, but also wondered - where do you guys bulk buy your chicken? I can currently get 1.1kg of skinless, boneless chicken breast for about a fiver, and i buy packs of white fish at around 750g for 3 quid - does the job. This is from Iceland by the way. Is this any good in comparison to the prices you guys buy it at?

I bulk buy my chicken from Makro. 5kg chicken breast fillets for £16.89 Theres usually about 21-22 filets in a pack averaging 210-250g per fillet, most are abot 225g.

I did an experement a while back to compare cooked weight with prepacked weight and IIRC a 230g fillet cooked down to about 200g - so although theres obvious water content its only about 10-15%

I also get my eggs from makro, 60 medium eggs for £4.75 or when they have the large in theyre £5.25 for 60. Bargain!!! I usually get 3 boxes to last me a month.

Lastly they do 1.5kg boxes of salmon fillets for £13. Boneless, skinless, individually wrapped and taste great.

They have loads of other stuff and I could keep buying and buying but Ive got to draw the line somewhere..... Oh they do 1kg tubs of cottage cheese for a couple of quid which is good value too.

Birds eye 100% chicken chargrills - £1 for a 2 pack.
I find these handy to have in the freezer for a quick meal. They cook in 25 mins from frozen and I usually throw them in a salad or have them with rice / pasta & veg.

9g fat
19g protein
carbs are low.

Birds eye 2 fish fillers for £1.24.
Havent had them before but I reckon stats will be similar to the above. Again handy for quick protein.
