What age did age become a hindrence? 20 July 2009 02:04 (permalink)
What age did you start to notice things change for the worse?  Gains slowing down, fat being easier to put on, injuries more prevelant, all that sort of thing?

How have you overcome it to persue your goals?

At 49 I've not noticed any hinderance!  Doing PB's through the year, 160kg atlas stone, 120kg without tacky, did 320kg deadlift in the racks last December, all drug free.
Perhaps a slight drop off in stamina but never was one for running!

What he said, although I'm more of a recreational (ie non-competitive) bodybuilder than a strongman.

Had injuries through the years but their frequency and severity hasn't particularly increased with age.

On a real good training run at the moment, closing in on PBs achieved more than ten years ago and on target to be in the best shape of my life by my 45th birthday next year.

Age will affect your performance in many sports but in the weights game gains can keep coming into your fifth and sixth decades and maybe beyond. Ask Fat Pete.

Never really noticed what age fat was easier to put on, sort of crept up on me during the years I wasn't training. Certainly feels harder to shift the flab, but apart from that and slightly less inclination to chase skirt haven't really noticed any difference

I did not do any bodybuilding at the time but at the age of 29 I suddenly found that if I ate all I wanted I started to get fat. Before that I often ate huge meals without any weight gain.

            Ask Fat Pete.

So far so good. I'm 53 now and still going strong. The real turning point for me came in my late 30s, this was the time I was forced to admit that I was not a young man any more and therefore could not continue training as though I was. Powers of recovery are the first thing to go, you take longer to get over things, whether it be training or injury or life in general.

You are as good as you ever were but not as often

That is what you have to learn and have to remember. Once you have accepted that fact you can modify your training accordingly you can soldier on for a surprising amount of time.  pb attempts get less and less frequent, but they are still there. It's a matter of acceptance of the way things are and not the way you wish they were.

Sooner or later there will come a point were things are going to start to go downhill, but I am not there yet. I will keep you posted on that one.

As far as I know, forgiveness is for the benefit of the person doing the forgiving, not the one being forgiven

My body went through some major wars in its teens and early 20's.  The effects of some of those injuries that I sustained from scrums, hard tackling, and pick & drive tactics has all meant that by 24 I was unable to play rugby again.  However, maybe that was a good thing because now that I'm in my 30's, I am in the shape of my life.  Its no wonder that Beckham is in top form at 34, Brian O'Driscoll is flying at 31, and Shane Mosley is on fire at 37.  Its because they recognised at the right time that they had to show respect to their bodies or their careers would be over much sooner.  I think the key is not giving your body blatent abuse and continuing to do it.  Keep that in mind and its no wonder Beckham thinks he can play until he's 38 at least.

                        Yeah.

Not entirely my experience though - although I was lifting more at 42 than at 22, fat gain when bulking has been more of a struggle since early 30's, and recovery times are longer in my 40s than 20s

Also have a number of aches, clicks and old injuries to work around, or that nag me on cold mornings (largely not injuries from training though, just they affect my training more than they once did)

I feel OK at 43, I get the odd injury that takes a few days longer to clear up but apart from that I'm OK.

I would say somewhere around 34. My body just can't handle the long working hours, travel and then training on top of it all. Growth and recovery times have had a marked impact.

I've not noticed a great deal in strength but then again I'm not particularly strong,[ well I don't think I am!] my recovery, I do allow longer ie I do a 4 way split over 3 days as opposed to 4 I find this helps, Injury wise I've picked up a few that have taken longer to heal but I expect this and workout accordingly, it's just a case of using yer nogging.

                                  Some lucky bastards on here!

My body first gave me pains and problems  from the age of 23.

Having trained off and on for years (mainly) I am giving it another go at age 37.

At 39 I could feel the aches and pains. If I don't warm up properly I can get injured easily. I also put on weight easier.

I think most of my aches and pains are from my roofing job.

I won't stop though, especially now I have read Fat Pete's and Mickey's posts!!
