I don't see what the issue is tbh. You can still sit down with her 3 times a day if needs be. Then in your own time supplement this with 3 more snacks in between no harm done.

It's abit of a running joke when I'm out with my parents that we need to stop every fews mins and crack a "feeding time" joke

Everyone you speak to is an expert on nutrition by the way. Especially the 'out of shape' ones. The only reason they havent got the body of a God(dess) is because of bad genes, or a dodgey knee etc etc etc etc

Yeah I said I'd sit with the family at dinner time and just eat my own meal, but then she started moaning saying like "oh so my food isn't good enough for you now" etc. LOL Ah you're right there's no issue really it just annoys me that everybody keeps pontificating to me about diet and nutrition when they don't have a clue. I've been bulking for nearly a year now and throughout that whole time my family (well particularly my mum and sister) have been preaching the obligatory "If you keep eating like that you're going to get fat" etc, well it's been nearly a year and I haven't gotten fat (in fact I've lost fat) so when, pray tell, do they anticipate this fatness to start I wonder??

You're dead right about everybody being an expert on nutrition, talking to one of the lads on a night out a few weeks ago who is in very mediocre shape and pretty weak, and he was preaching to me that "protein shakes just make you fat" and so on, does my head in sometimes!!

I know where you are coming from with your mother giving you grief.
My wife just does not get my training. She gets peed off that i eat "all the food, all the time" and that i eat before she is cooks dinner. I've even resorted to calling round my mothers house just to sneakily make myself something to eat without the wife knowing haha.

CK, what does your mum cook? My mum is the most picky eater ever so when I do occasionally see her nowadays I have something totally different anyway. When I lived at home I was on a diet of chips, kievs and beans most of the time. There's quite alot of history in my family with diabetes and heart disease so think she may even likes the fact I try to look after myself. My dad eats pretty well but drinks like a fish

Heh heh, my flatmate keeps insisting that I'm going to be fat in 5years time or whatever, as "all my muscle will just turn into fat". Coming from a guy who struggles to walk up a flight of stairs without losing breath.

I had another mate who suggested that excessive protein (i.e. more than 60g per day!) was a waste. And that you didnt need to do squats to get big legs.... jogging 20mins everyday will give you legs like Ronnie Coleman apparently. Bear in mind this guy was built like Peter Crouch.

Bah, each to their own, but quite happy with how I'm doing thankyou!

Oh don't get me wrong my mum and dad both cook great food, I absolutely love their cooking for the most part. It's just that they tend to use really heavy creamy sauces whenever they make curry type dishes which contain a lot of fat/salt/sodium/sugar. And also the meals they make rarely have enough protein in them for me, they usually use maybe 2/3 chicken breasts for a dinner that is split between 5 (sometimes 6) people. And I have my diet all planned out and I'm making all my meals in advance anyway so I want to stick to it.

TBH I do agree with 'each to their own', I would never criticise my dad's diet even though his diet is absolutely awful (whether you're into training or not!), but it should work both ways - just wish they wouldn't criticise!

Just ordered a pair of straps, my grip has definitely been failing me on Deads and Rows before anything else and it was pissing me off so I figured I'd get some straps. I bet some of the strength guys like Owen or IainK will give me some sh1t for this haha

It's because me and stephen fry are soul brothers. He can sense my thoughts... I even have him on twitter

And Krisby's right, straps are for girls! But then again I train at home so I dont mind every plate/barbell/dumbbell/inch of my bench covered in chalk.

I've used chalk before and I really didn't notice that much of a difference with it! The main reason I'm getting straps is because my grip was failing very early on heavy DB Rows and BB shrugs as well, and I've tried chalk with both of these exercises and found it didn't help much. I won't use straps much on Deads I'm sure, but maybe for max attempts..

Re:CK's Journal **Deadlift PB Page 14** (Pics Page 1,9,16) - 10 December 2009 01:28
Still been researching loads on DC training, decided I'm definitely going to give this a go, maybe in the new year perhaps. I know strictly speaking Dante and most of the DCers would say that I am not 'ready' to try DC training but I really think there is a lot of bullsh1t in that - there seems to be a lot of contempt towards "noobs" flying around Intensemuscle and in basically everything Dante has written about DC training and he just seems to assume that most people who have been training for less than 3 years are complete idiots who just want "big biceptz" and just want to try DC training because they heard about it as the next big thing on bodybuilding.com.

I can understand where Dante is coming from in this regard, and I'm sure the last thing he wants is morons injuring themselves doing his workout programme, and I can kind of understand his contempt as well: he doesn't want his programme to be reduced to some mere bandwagon and his training principles sullied by a mass influx of noobs.

All of this notwithstanding, we are after all only talking about a new routine here; it's not like I'm contemplating running an AAS cycle when it's questionable that I'm ready to or not. I realise this kind of training will incorporate periods of intensity the likes of which I haven't experienced in weights training before, but it's not like there is the potential of severely adverse side effects detrimental to long term health or anything! And besides I imagine I will only be doing this routine for no more than 8 weeks or so anyway.

Soooooo...with that in mind, I've been thinking about my choice of exercises for the programme. The idea is that you choose your favourite 3 exercises for each body part and alternate them in cycles split into two workouts, upper body and lower body (plus biceps and forearms). My exercises would probably be:

Chest
Incline Bench Press
Flat DB Press
Incline Bench Press (Smith)

Shoulders
Strict OH Press
Seated DB Press
Seated Behind-Neck Press (Smith); OR Arnold Press

Triceps
Skull Crushers
CGBP
Cable Pushdowns

Back Width
Wide-Grip Pulldowns
Behind-Neck Pulldowns
Chin Ups; OR Narrow-Grip Pulldowns

Back Thickness

Deadlift
DB Bent-Over Rows
BB Bent-Over Rows

Biceps
EZ Curls
Alternate DB Curls
Cable Curls; OR Incline DB Curls

Forearms
Hammer Curls
Reverse Curls
Pinwheel Curls

Calves
Standing Calf Raise (Smith)
Seated Calf Raise
Calf Raise on Leg Press

Hamstrings
SLDL
Seated Leg Curls
Good Mornings; OR SLDL (Smith)

Quads
Squat
Front Squat
Leg Press

So workout number 1 would look something like this:

*n1xn2xn3 denotes rest-pause set reps (15 deep breaths/~20 seconds)
**weights used are based on my current lifts

Incline Bench Press
20kg x 12
30kg x 8
40kg x 6
50kg x 4
62.5kg x 10 x 4 x 1
Chest Stretch

OH Press
20kg x 12
25kg x 8
30kg x 6
40kg x 4
52.5kg x 8 x 4 x 1
Delt Stretch

Skull Crushers
(Unsure whether to include any warmup here as triceps will be firing at this stage already, I've read conflicting opinions on this)
27kg x 10 x 4 x 1
Triceps Stretch

Wide-Grip Pulldowns

20kg x 12
30kg x 8
40kg x 6
50kg x 4
62.5kg x 10 x 4 x 1

Deadlift
40kg x 12
60kg x 8
80kg x 6
90kg x 4
100kg x 15-20
Back Stretch

And workout number 2 would look like:

EZ Curls
10kg x 12
15kg x 8
20kg x 6
25kg x 4
30kg x 8 x 4 x 1

Hammer Curls
(Again unsure as to whether a warmup would be necessary here)
15kg x 15
Bicep Stretch

Standing Calf Raise (Smith)

60kg x 12
70kg x 8
80kg x 6
90kg x 4
100kg x 10 (inc. 20 sec negative phase)

SLDL
30kg x 12
40kg x 8
50kg x 6
60kg x 4
70kg x 20

Squat

20kg x 12
40kg x 8
60kg x 6
80kg x 4
100kg x 4-6
Widowmaker (20 reps, no idea really what weight I'd use for this)
Quad and Hamstring Stretches
Crawl to the changing room and get sick

Workout 3 would be the same as workout 1 except using my second choice exercises (Flat DB Press instead of Incline Bench Press, Seated DB Press instead of OH Press, etc.) The warmup periods are preliminary, DC doesn't really have any warmup protocol set in stone or anything, it just requires that you do whatever warmup you feel you need, the warmup sets I listed above are based loosely on Dante's examples.

F.uck me that's a long post, LOL. Well that's about the long and short of it I guess. Looks like a lot of fun... For the time being I will be sticking to trusty P/P/L, but the more I think and read about DC the more tempted I am to try it, so I think I just might.

Pull - 10/12/09

Deadlift
60kg x 10
100kg x 6
122.5kg x 5 (+2.5kg)
122.5kg x 5
122.5kg x 4

BB Bent-Over Rows
(the 42kg DB's were being used by somebody else so decided to do this instead)
60kg x 10
60kg x 9
60kg x 9

Wide-Grip Pulldowns

14/20 x 10
14/20 x 10 (+1)
14/20 x 9 (+3)

Alternate DB Curls
16kg x 10
16kg x 8
16kg x 8

BB Shrugs (Smith)
100kg x 10
100kg x 10
100kg x 9

My straps should be arriving tomorrow so this will surely be my last pull session before I start using them, and I'm very much looking forward to it tbh, my hands are in absolute tatters right now, all the callouses I had have now swollen up and turned into blisters, curse my amazingly soft skin!

Hi mate,

I'm pretty new here and just been reading through the journal, impressive gaining!

I've only been training (properly with compounds) for 2 and a bit months now and stuff like this is always an inspiration so well played!

I was just wondering, how much is your diet costing you roughly per week? I'll be moving into my own flat in January (just graduated as well.. funny how that works huh? haha!) and I'll need to keep a much closer eye on the cost of what I'm getting in. Money isn't too much of an objective thankfully, but I'd rather it not spiral out of control :)

Cheers and keep up the good work!

Edit: Forgot to mention... a partial reason I got hooked to this thread was the Patrick Bateman appreciation. I've been obsessed by both book and movie for a few years now! though a fair chunk of the book is incredibly hard to read without getting nauteous :S!

It's funny as well reading stories about folk posing constantly in the gym... there's quite alot in the book where he's actually in his gym and resenting (in only a way Bateman could) the very sort! also for anyone whose read the book.. you all know what happens eventually in his gym! :D

Hey there,

Cheers for the comments, it's nice to know I've inspired somebody haha! And good to see another fellow Bateman head, there are a few of them around MT but we're pretty rare haha.

I actually worked out the cost of my diet the other day and it works out to just about 5 euro a day (not sure what that would be in pounds, 4 pounds maybe?), which is pretty damn cheap. The reason it's so cheap is because I shop in LIDL! Personally I think the food there is perfect and does the job perfectly!

You ever considered starting a journal? I reckon you should give it a go!

Oh BTW I'm not including supplements in the cost of that diet, so including whey and powdered carbs etc it is prob up around 6.50-7 euro a day, but not entirely sure on that.

You've caught me on a quiet day in work.. so the replies quick haha!

No worries at all mate, reading through that kind of progression just enforces that with the right diet and amount of determination, succeeding isn't as impossible as some may think (btw, by being at work I can't see the images.. so that's based on the writing along). It's also nice to know I'm not the only one having to deal with snipy diet comments, haha!

It's refreshing to see Bateman interest, as weird as that sounds haha! it grows on me more every time I watch it, perhaps it's the insanely catchy sound-track as well?! have you read the book?? it's far more detailed than the film is (i.e that opening sequence in the bathroom is about 6/7 pages long naming all the products/routines!)

Being perfectly honest, a journal is something I've thought about doing for quite some time and I do keep a record of what I've done etc in an Excel file. I've just recently changed my diet as well so perhaps I'll give it a month or 2 of keeping one to myself just to see how it goes, then maybe start a proper one on here in the new year! my lifts aren't too impressive as of yet (though I know it's about quality, not quantity), I'm making gains but with the diet sorted out I'm hoping I can start making some real gains!

Nice one about the cost of the diet, that's not too much at all! there's a Lidl 2 minutes away from me currently :D I got swayed off such a high protein diet when shopping at Tesco.. was costing an absolute fortune!

Edit: I'm only using Whey Protein just now.. which to be fair costs quite alot! but creatine could prove handy when trying to push through. At the moment it's quite difficult to keep energy up as I go after work (get there around 5pm) and have been up since 5.30am! creatine might do the trick though..

If you're feeling lethargic and tired after work before a workout you could always try a pre-workout pump supplement, I always liked VPX NO Shotgun and Muscletech NaNOVapor, but the two most highly recommended ones seem to be BSN's NO Xplode and Gaspari Superpump 250, neither of which I've tried because they don't sell them in Ireland! Basically they're just blends of caffeine plus things like arginine, tyrosine, taurine, creatine and sometimes beta alanine (which gives you a nice tingling sensation lol) and they give you a nice buzz that makes you just want to get into the gym and smash the place up.

Yep I've read American Psycho, many times, I way prefer it to the movie, despite the horrifically detailed descriptions of violence and rape, etc.
It's probably the most outrageous and shocking thing I've ever read tbh!

Re:CK's Journal **Deadlift PB Page 14** (Pics Page 1,9,16) - 11 December 2009 20:30
I just had an image of taking one just before I finished work and sitting tapping my feet at an alarming rate on my train into town hahaha! :D definitely sounds worth a shot though. If I lived closer I'd definitely go in the morning anyway as that's when I'm most raring to go, presently I'm not taking anything before heading there, a skimmed milk protein shake has been suggested but I'll be glad when I get rid of this disgusting strawberry EAS stuff! I've put some thought into the journal idea and I'm definitely gonna start one here at the turn of the new year, it seems a fantastic way to track progress beyond just a spreadsheet plus getting feedback etc.

Oh I'd have to agree with the book there definitely, eye gouging etc I could watch or read about quite happily (except that guy in the news recently who done it to his ex with a coathanger!!!) but when it comes to rape etc... I start getting queezy! the only disappointing thing about the film when I read the book was the lacking role of Timothy Price, or the scene where he beats up Lois at the department store haha! would've been good to see!

Agree with CK, theres been times when I'm knackered and thought sod it, couple of scoops of SP250 and I can't wait to start!

Never read the book but I'm a big fan of the film
, I love the obsession with the business cards lol

The book is in a different league, there are some bits that gave me nightmares. It's hard to imagine that a human being could think up some of the stuff that's in that book. I know people who loved the movie and tried to read the book but couldn't, they got to some of the more disturbing scenes and they just gave up. But it's a fantastic book all the same, one of the greats imo

Re:CK's Journal **Deadlift PB Page 14** (Pics Page 1,9,16) - 12 December 2009 17:21
It's becoming very very hard for me to not start cutting right now. I know for most people the answer to the question "when should I start cutting?" is "when you can't stand the look of your belly any more!" and this is certainly the case for me now, last night I was heading out on a big night with all the boys, kind of a dress up dinner affair and then hitting town after (just an excuse to dress like bateman really), and when I was getting ready I realised I couldn't fit into 3 out of my 4 suits. I don't mind not fitting into my jacket etc because this means my upper body has bulked up but I couldn't close the trousers which can only mean that I have put on fat.

But I know it's a game of patience now, because the longer I leave it to cut, the better I'll look when I eventually do cut. It's killing me though cos I met one of my mates last night in the club and he has apparently been in the gym a lot recently but he's a complete bench and bicep boy, and in fairness his biceps looked deadly (not sure if they were bigger than mine but they definitely looked bigger cos he is way leaner than me) and when I jokingly asked him if biceps were the only thing he trained, he pulled up his t-shirt to reveal a f.ucking six pack. And this guy knows nothing about nutrition or training at all, and he goes out on the piss 2-3 times a week. We were discussing our lifts and I am far stronger than him, but the sickening thing is he had all these birds coming up to him admiring him and calling him 'ripped' etc. and I know that it's ALL because of his low bf%.

On top of that one of my particularly obnoxious mates (more of an acquaintance really) kept giving me a hard time for the whole night about having put on a bit of fat, whereas most people compliment me on how much bigger I've gotten this guy goes "yeah but you've gotten f.ucking fat, ditch the protein shakes and hit the treadmill", etc. I know I shouldn't let this get to me because it's only banter really and not only is this guy in very mediocre shape himself (we compared arms and mine are far bigger, and he has apparently been doing weights for 7 years) but he is also kinda short and has an obvious napoleon complex, all the lads just say once you start taking him seriously then you just get pissed off so to just ignore him for the most part. So it's more just the cumulative effect of these couple of events last night and over the last few weeks, the reason I got into weight training was to get into shape and increase my confidence etc. but right now I'm feeling **** about myself again. I KNOW it will all be worth while when I eventually do cut, but I suppose it's just a matter of digging deep until then.

*Deck him

I had the same problem mate, my stomach muscles basically collapsed so when I relaxed I had this massive bulge, even now I walk around slightly tensing my abs.

Not sure what exercises you do for them but I've been doing crunches at least 3 times a week and its made a massive improvement. They won't make you loose weight but they pull your stomach in so you'll look a lot better.

LOL man I can tell you I was mighty tempted to deck him last night! But it wouldn't have been very diplomatic, we bothl have roughly all the same friends so it would've caused mayhem haha.

I do ab/core work after every weights session already mate. It's nothing really to do with my abs, because I know I have a fairly strong core already, I can actually feel a six pack with my fingers under the layer of fat.
I usually do combinations of Incline/Decline Sit Ups, Incline/Hanging/Roman Chair Leg Raises and Crunches/Serratus Crunches/Sicilian Crunches etc for my abs, usually 6-8 sets in total at low-ish reps. It's purely down to bf% at this stage I think!

Kane,

I can imagine how close you must've gotten to decking him.. but you'll be glad you didn't after you cut when you're about twice the size and twice as defined as him and he'll be miles off it. It's all about low body-fat with abs and partly genetic as well, one of my friends boyfriends doesn't hit the gym at all but he's a MAJOR ecto; eats like a horse but struggles to put weight on and the 8-pack on him is absolutely insane.

It's the same thing with his biceps really... bet he's useless at compounds! everyone would have deadly biceps if they spent 45 minutes 3 times a week doing preacher curls.

An extra thing to keep you going with the current routine is the fact it's winter and it's very, very cold! cutting just now would be painful. Save it for March/April then by the time the summer comes it'll be 2 tickets to the (well defined) gun-show!

Legs & Shoulders - 13/12/09

Squat
20kg x 10
60kg x 8
90kg x 8 (+1)
90kg x 7 (+1)
90kg x 6 (+1)

Front Squat
55kg x 8 (+2.5kg)
55kg x 8
Groin/Hips started to hurt here probably due to my hasty lack of stretching beforehand so I stopped

SLDL (Smith)
70kg x 10
70kg x 10
70kg x 8

Standing Calf Raise (Smith)

2 second negatives each rep
100kg x 14
102.5kg x 14 (+2.5kg)
105kg x 14 (+2.5kg)
105kg x 12

OH Press
52kg x 8
52kg x 7
52kg x 5

Arnold Press
20kg x 8 (+2kg)
20kg x 8
20kg x 8 (+1)

Good session, left rotator cuff hurting a bit now, again probably because I didn't warm up/stretch properly beforehand. I have really poor shoulder flexibility, my rotator cuff was hurting a bit even after just squatting.

Cheers dude! That post cheered me up a lot haha. Ah you're right, I'm being a right moan here feeling sorry for myself but I know I'm going to look miles better than basically all my mates when I do cut down. The plan is to cut at the start of April just after my exams. Can't wait! How's your training going mate?

Kane,

The training is going well mate cheers, home life is a bit hectic at the moment so there's been a few slips as far as diet goes.. but the training has been solid for the most part. I'm gonna start changing my split to Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday in due course, I went on Saturday there and it was brilliant! fantastic when there's nobody in the gym and it's easier for a banter with the cute receptionist :P

I'm gonna give the journal a trial run this week and if it's flowing like I want then I'll try get some pics and get it on here!

Some pics taken last night:

My lats seem to be my most developed muscle, but as you can see I'm carrying quite a bit of bf%, not to worry, my diet hasn't been great for the last couple of months but it's back on track now and it's clean eating for the most part from now on.

You should defo give a journal a go, it's helped me a lot. Sometimes I'd be knackered in the gym and I'd think about the fact that I have to write out my workouts here and it motivates me to squeeze out an extra rep! Be interesting to see what your physique is like too.

Day off today, just doing some shoulder rehab and a lot of eating, plus getting lots of green tea and salmon oils into me. Will prob get some ibuprofen when I'm out later on just to stop any remaining RC inflammation in its tracks before I train chest tomorrow.

Peace

But on a serious note why would you want to cut in winter?

All out bulk untill March/April then major cut, get the abs and guns out for the summer

Agreed with the comment about low BF, I bet your mate is only 11stone something but everyone thinks thats he's swole lol

Good progress lad, agreed with the above comment, you'll need serious insolation to keep you warm here in Ireland, its soo cold, so forget about a cut for a while!!

What do you buy in Lidl, i try shop there too, as im a student and the food is perfect, no issues there.

I buy tuna, cottage cheese, fruit + veg and milk. Anything else worth buying that I'm missing out on??
