The cut begins... Back to business. Returned to the gym today after exactly a 3 week hiatus and my god I have gotten weak. The numbers speak for themselves: Bench 20kg x 8 x 2 40kg x 5 60kg x 5 90kg x 4 (-1) 87.5kg x 5 (-2.5kg) 87.5kg x 5 87.5kg x 5 87.5kg x 4 (-1) Incline Bench 60kg x 8 60kg x 6 (-2) 60kg x 4 (-4) !!! Dips BW x 8 BW x 7 (-1) BW x 5 (-3) Skull Crushers 27.5kg x 8 27.5kg x 8 27.5kg x 5 (-3) FST-7 Cable Crossovers 14kg x 12 14kg x 12 14kg x 12 14kg x 10 14kg x 10 14kg x 9 14kg x 9 Just about the only enjoyable part of the session! In a way it's unfortunate that I am starting to cut now because ideally I'd like to have been at least back to my strength before I took this time off before I started trying to lose weight. But what can ya do, the belly has to go, there's no two ways about it. Having said that my diet was appalling for the last 3 weeks, so perhaps once I get back to eating a respectable amount of protein the strength will return shortly. Deadlifting and squatting should be interesting this week. Started a new diet today as well. Basically high protein, high fat and just cutting out carbs except for pre and post-workout, and even then I'll only be eating oats probably. So sort of a TKD sort of affair I suppose? I am sitting at around 100kg but I have realised more of that is probably fat than I thought, so currently the plan is to be eating around 2600-2800 kcals a day. It's gone well so far I must say, just had my third meal and it was just a chicken breast and a big pile o' broccoli and cauliflower, covered in olive oil. It was delish and filled me right up despite the lack of carbs. Plus my pre-workout meal was 6 eggs, followed by a big pile of oats with a banana chopped up mixed in a bowl with water and a tiny dash of sugar free cordial and it was bloody gorgeous. I know it's early days but I can see myself enjoying this low carb thing. God knows how my strength will fare though. Decided to keep using creatine though to help with the strength, and gonna order some BCAAs and Glutamine later on as well. Picking up an exercise bike off my mate tomorrow so AM unfuelled SSCV will begin the following day I guess. Bring it on!

Ballbag AKA onefatidiot Sorry if you have already said in previous posts But what cut diet(low carbs) did you go for in the end? Nothing specific really, just cut down carbs until I'm in a 500kcal or so deficit, leaving only carbs before and after training. Plus loads of protein and loads of fat. I'll monitor and adjust and see how I get on.

iaink Hope they turn out good. When does training re-commence at 100%? Now! What do you mean exactly? Like, not being in a deficit? The cut will last 12-14 weeks depending on how I get on, but I'm still gonna try and increase all my lifts during the cut as well, if I find I'm struggling to do that I'll add in a bit more carbs perhaps. But yeah, back training 100% now, exams are finito until September!

Mate im starting my cut on Monday (post excessive easter egg consumption!) too! I'm doing it a bit diff, will be having a small amount of carbs breakfast/lunch/pre/post but just protein/veg/fat for dinner. Did it before and works well. Good luck to both us chubbers!!

personally dont think you need a drastic cut mate, clean up the diet and add in some cardio and you will be able to put some size on and drop bf% aswell. i dont rate excercise bikes for cardio as its too easy to "potter" along lol, a brisk walk for 30-40 mins is much more effective as its load bearing. How are you finding DC training?

Cheers for the input J. Are you basing that opinion on the pic I put up on the previous page? If so, bear in mind I am considerably fatter now! I haven't gotten any more tired or lethargic than I normally am by cutting out the carbs so far, so I'm just gonna see how I get on. I'm still eating sh1t loads of food! Nah mate I never went for DC in the end, I was thinking about it for ages a while ago but then I decided to stick with a more traditional strength and mass routine. DC is something that I will hope to do some time soon though, perhaps some time this year, I really like the look of it and by all accounts it is great for strength as well as mass!

Based on the pic, the cardio will bump up metabolism quite a bit and if youre diet is controlled then you will add some lean mass and drop BF too... the holy grail... argh no carbs - me no likey lol, thankfully i have a fast metabolism and am dieting on 300g a day pmsl, keep an eye on youre strength so that you dont lose muscle. DC is great - i really rate it, made some awesome natural gains with it and really enjoyed doing it, biggest strenght increases ive ever had came from it too... i still follow a similar protocal but have adapted it to include slightly more volume - so 2-3 excercises instead of just the one and split into 3 days instead of 2.

Yep this is what I keep hearing! Dunno if you've read this far back in my journal but I said that I have intentions of possibly competing in powerlifting someday, but to be honest I think I have sort of jumped the gun a bit with that. I am still for all intents and purposes a beginner and getting into good shape is still a priority (obviously, hence why I'm cutting!), and I think for the time being the best thing to do would be to just build up a solid base of mass and strength, before ever thinking about powerlifting per se. DC sounds like so much fun but yeah like you said apparently you can get bloody strong on it too, so definitely going to try it out sooner rather than later!

Oh dear... 1/4/10 Deadlift 20kg x 8 x 2 60kg x 8 100kg x 5 140kg x 5 140kg x 5 140kg x 3 (-2) Simply couldn't do any more after this. WTF DB Rows 45kg x 8 45kg x 8 45kg x 8 Lat Pulldowns 90kg x 7 (-1) 90kg x 7 (-1) 80kg x 8 Cable Rows 60kg x 10 60kg x 10 60kg x 9 EZ Curls 30kg x 10 30kg x 9 30kg x 9 FST-7 Cable Curls 20kg x 12 20kg x 12 20kg x 12 20kg x 12 20kg x 10 20kg x 10 20kg x 9 40 mins on Crosstrainer So yeah, basically a terrible session. I'll put it down to the 3 weeks I took off. Thinking of doing a bit more direct volume for bi's as well. For basically a year I've just been doing 3-4 sets of curls at the end of my back workout, and my bi's seem to be the part of me that have grown the least since I started! So will prob add in another exercise or two. That FST-7 thing is bloody awesome but I doubt I'll do it every session, just seems like a bit of an overkill!

CK, your current journal title (for I know it changes from time to time) is: 'CK's Journal *Now with added no carbs* (Apologies for the double negative)' I don't pretend to be the worlds foremost expert on the English language, but that doesn't seem to be a double negative, just bad English

2/4/10 40 Mins on Bike (Unfuelled) It's a pretty old school spinning bike so it doesn't have any sort of built in heart rate monitor or anything, so I have no idea what kind of intensity I was going at, but in hindsight it was probably over 140bpm because I was pretty nackered after it. Will prob invest in some sort of heart rate monitor.

3/4/10 40 Mins on Bike (Unfuelled) Just off to make some food for the rest of the day. Going out on the piss later on so my diet will almost certainly suffer tonight and tomorrow, but I'll try to keep it acceptable. End of exams piss-up tonight so I can't really say no!

6/4/10 Bench 20kg x 8 x 2 40kg x 8 60kg x 5 87.5kg x 5 87.5kg x 5 87.5kg x 4 (-1) Ugh WTF? Incline Bench 60kg x 8 60kg x 8 (+2) 60kg x 7 (+3) Huh? Dips BW x 8 BW x 7 BW x 6 (+1) Skull Crushers 27.5kg x 8 27.5kg x 8 27.5kg x 8 (+3) Cable Crossovers 20kg x 9 20kg x 8 20kg x 7 Drop set -> 14kg x 8 (I think) 45 mins cardio + abs Session started off crap but then got better, was up in everything other than flat bench. Could potentially have been a set up issue for that. As for the diet, I weighed myself on Friday and it appears I had lost nearly a kilo (after 3 days of dieting!), which I'm guessing is almost all water, but then I weighed myself today and I'm back to exactly where I was when I started, which I put down to my excessive drinking and poor diet over the weekend! I'm actually enjoying this low carb thing, I've never slept better in my life and I'm still energetic throughout the day. Hopefully I'll get my lifts back to their former glory (LOL) by next week or so.

I actually couldn't deadlift today, simply because on Tuesday I for some stupid reason decided to do some ab work at the end of my session for the first time in months, and the DOMs in my abs yesterday and today are just silly. I can hardly sit down or stand up, so I tried deadlifting today and the pain was excruciating just on the warmup! So decided to give it a miss this week! That said, it was a great session. Felt energetic and strong, and it was a pretty high intensity session with not much hanging around between sets. Was dripping in sweat by the end of it. Replaced the Deads with Barbell Rows to start off with. 8/4/10 BB Rows 20kg x 8 40kg x 8 60kg x 8 70kg x 8 70kg x 8 70kg x 7 Up by 10kg on these since the last time I tried them a few months ago, so pretty happy with that. DB Rows 45kg x 8 45kg x 8 45kg x 8 Lat Pulldowns 90kg x 8 (+1) 90kg x 8 (+1) 90kg x 6 (+10kg) BB Shrugs 140kg x 8 140kg x 10 140kg x 9 EZ Curls 30kg x 10 30kg x 10 30kg x 7 Hammer Curls 15kg x 5 15kg x 5 15kg x 5 Arms in bits by this stage! 40 Mins SSCV Really enjoyed the session. Hadn't done Shrugs in a while, somehow I managed to add 40kg to them since the last time I tried them, and they still didn't feel heavy. The last time I tried Shrugs a few months ago I could only do 100kg for 8 reps or so, and I had been Deadlifting beforehand, so just goes to show how much your traps get obliterated by Deadlifting!

Re: CK's Journal

I've decided I'm going to add an extra day to my routine for OHP and various shoulder stuff. Whether OHP will assist my bench at all seems to be a contentious issue, but it's still something I wouldn't mind getting strong on nonetheless. Plus an extra day in the gym = more output, which is clearly beneficial while I'm dieting. So my routine will be something like: Tuesday - Bench/Chest + Tris Thursday - Deadlift/Back + Bi's Friday - OHP/Shoulders Sunday - Squat/Legs Basically a Wendler-esque split (but obviously the similarities between routines end there!) Here was the sesh today: 9/4/10 OHP 20kg x 10 x 2 30kg x 5 40kg x 5 52.5kg x 5 52.5kg x 5 50kg x 5 50kg x 4 50kg x 4 (Leg drive on last rep here) 55kg x 1 57.5kg x 1 60kg x 2 Decided to have a crack at some singles at the end, all of which used leg drive. Front Raise 12.5kg x 10 12.5kg x 10 12.5kg x 8 Lateral Raise 12.5kg x 8 12.5kg x 8 12.5kg x 6 FST-7 Seated Smith Press (LOL!) 50kg x 8 50kg x 7 40kg x 12 40kg x 12 40kg x 11 40kg x 10 40kg x 9 As I said above, LOL. Finished off with some HIIT. Did a Tabata barbell complex, horrific stuff but felt great after it. Gonna do one of these sessions once a week, or possibly twice. Today went something like: Front Squat x 20 secs Rest x 10 secs OHP x 20 secs Rest x 10 secs SLDL x 20 secs Rest x 10 secs Hang Clean x 20 secs Rest x 10 secs Front Squat x 20 secs Rest x 10 secs Bent Over Row x 20 secs Rest x 10 secs SLDL x 20 secs Rest x 10 secs Hang Clean x 20 secs Rest x 10 secs Oh also just got my delivery of BCAA powder and L-Glutamine, so going to be taking 5g BCAA pre and post workout (or with my shakes on non-workout days), and 15g L-Glutamine per day, split between 3 shakes. BCAAs taste like vomit.

Theres no need for 6/7 cardio sessions a week mate imo thats too much to start off with, i usually start with 3 sessions a week then add more if need be as i progress through my cut. You putting up before and after pics mate? What are you trying to lose each week, if there is an approx amount that is? You will defo look well after 12 weeks, if you got decent abs which im sure you do they should be out i would imagine. I think you could maintain strength (even that will be a challenge) but to add more isnt going to happen imo especially since your natty but remain positive and prove me wrong ;) How many days/weeks into your cut are you? Are you going to do weekly weigh in's? And last of all good luck!!!

Ah I'm not doing that many cardio sessions, the plan is to do 3-4 SSCV sessions unfuelled per week, and 1 session of HIIT per week, maybe 2. Well, I guess that's 5-6 sessions in total, but the point is although I've cut carbs right down, I'm still eating quite a lot, so I think increasing output rather than just decreasing cals makes sense. Also remember I'm actually carrying quite a lot of fat at the moment, a lot more than you are I think! So I have a good bit of body weight that isn't metabolically active (the chub), so there's no point in feeding it. Currently consuming about 2600 kcals, feeling full of energy in the gym and throughout the day, in fact there is a possibility that I have gone into ketosis, because I'm only getting less than 50-60g carbs a day. Em I suppose this is technically my second week cutting, but realistically it's my first because I started dieting for a few days last week but it kinda went to sh1t with a major blowout over easter weekend, LOL. So I'm just saying I have started on Tuesday, so I'm 3 days in now! I don't know if I'm going to be able to increase my lifts, but I'm certainly going to try! Definitely going to maintain them at the very least though, if my lifts start to drop then I will increase the kcals. Start weight was 101kg, gonna do weekly weigh-ins yep. I've taken before photos, but I'm prob only gonna put them up if I'm happy with the results at the end!

Well just had my weekend 'cheat' meal, which consisted of a chicken breast with veg, plus a bit of chilli mango sauce and coconut milk, so about 10g of sugary carbs. I'm so naughty. LOL

Ah i see were your coming from now fair play, id personally drop cal and just do 3 sessions or so a week. You couldnt be carrying more fat than me lol You only started your cut and your only consuming 50-60g carbs, i dont think thats wise, ive been told its best to gradually dropped carbs, as your cut will get tougher as you progress but up to you of course see what works. 101kg fook me mate thats 222lbs! whats your waist measurements, are you going to take before and after measurements? You could drop loads in 12 weeks mate, a good 16lbs - 24lbs depending on how you go about it. How much you planning to drop per week?

Nah haven't bothered to take any measurements, but I know my waist is around 35". The plan is to drop 1lb-2lb a week, but I just weighed myself and I have lost 2kg this week! But I am guessing this is almost all water weight from the drop in carbs. Yeah I had considered gradually reducing carbs, but decided to go for a TKD type diet instead and it made more sense to me to cut down carbs at the start because then it would only take a few days to go into ketosis and I would feel much better and energetic then (which I do now!), whereas if I gradually reduced carbs, I would probably feel less energetic for longer because my brain would be like 'eh where the hell are my carbs gone' rather than just switching to using fat as energy from the start (this is my grossly oversimplified synposis of ketogenesis - LOL)

Actually not missing carbs at all tbh, I was for the first few days but right now I'm feeling more energetic, in and out of the gym, than I ever did when I was bulking. Maybe this test booster product I'm trying out for Monster supps is having more of an effect than I had anticipated? The lifts are coming back up now so hopefully this will continue!
