Exertion headaches? - 29 August 2009 16:31
I've started to have a real problem with headaches since starting my new program at the gym a couple of weeks ago. It happened the first time doing chin-ups - my head just exploded into an instant REALLY painful pressure headache.

Now I find it's happening all the time whenever I exert myself a lot.  I find if I work through it it does subside after about 5-10 minutes but leaves a residual mild headache for the rest of the day. And it's really bad pain for those 5-10 minutes which is not good in the gym.

Has anyone ever experienced this before? Is it likely to pass as my body gets more used to lifting?

Is it general exercises or a specific exercise when you get the pain?

I had these or at least i thought i had. Got them from any exercise really could be cable xovers or bench whatever.

Went to docs and they were very condescending tbh

"are you a med student"
No
"how do you know its exertional headaches"
I just think it might be as I only get them when exerting
"Do you know what you're doing? (gym wise)"
"yes"
"its probably nothing"
Ok

that was how it went! I left and took a rest from training for about a week and focused on breathing etc in the gym and never had them since

Do you find you are holding your breath and/or tensing your jaw?

I used to have the same problem when doing chins, it turned out to be due to over tensing my jaw on the pull up section.

i had the same prob a while back, always when doing chins or chest press or heavy leg work. i found doing a bit of light cardio for 10-15 mins before training helped get the blood moving around before lifting anything. and dont forget to breathe properly, can be too easy to hold ur breath thru a set!
