Prozac...... 06 September 2009 06:46 (permalink)
Hey guys, been prescribed prozac (took your advice kitty and finally went an saw a doc!), and need to take it but read up about it online and there's alot of statements saying tht it gains weight? ARGH as if my ass aint fat enough right now! lol Has anyone here ever taken prozac and had weight gain?
If it makes me better i'll of course take it regardless of weight gain, but it would be crap :(

thanks peeps xxxx

You have the knowledge to minimise any weight gain but you might just have to work a little harder at it whilst on medication. If you are really concerned then speak to your Doc to see if there's an alternative. I've read information on people taking prozac losing weight so you never know

Jessie, did you get any insights as to why prozac can lead to weight gain?
does it influence appettite so that people taking it are likely to eat more, or can it affect metabolism so that a person can gain weight more easily?

There could be a whole host of factors that may make a person taking prozac loose or gain weight, any of which may or may not apply to you.

Well i read different things really (i shouldnt have read personal oppinions on the internet as you end up thinking allsorts of things), but some say it slows down metabolism and it also makes you weak and sluggish, lethargic. So i guess not doing anything makes you gain weight, its just typical that its there to try and help depression and yet gaining weight isn't exactly a moral booster, im such a drama queen, sorry :) xxxx

jessie, ive been on prozac on and off for YEARS and never had an issue with weight gain. The opposite in fact, it stops me bingeing so my weight is more stable on it

Ditto Liz - I've been on Prozac recently and didn't have any issue with weight gain. I did however, have to come off because it made me sooooo tired I couldn't co-ordinate muself properly!!

Just been reading up and i seems that ppl that have a decreased appitite due to depression tend to eat more as the prozac helps their mood, but ppl that binge (ME) tend to lose weight as their mood becomes more stable, hate the tiredness but if diet and exercise is right i guess it shouldnt be a problem. Did the prozac help your situation??

i first went on prozac a few years ago to help with bulimia, and it stopped it just like a switch had been flicked.  I came off it when i was pregnant and was fine, but suffered from a degree of postnatal depression so went on setraline (as i was breastfeeding ) ...was ok but not back to my full self .  so i went back on prozac again about 6 weeks ago, have just upped it to my old dose, I'm REALLY tired ..i mean really really i could sleep forever.....I never had that from prozac before so i dont know if its that or other factors. Ive completely lost my need for a chocolate fix, i hadnt even realised it happening, so i'm actually looking alrighht even though im too tired to actually do any cardio LOL.

My doc put me pn Prozac for that reason linked to my mood as I said binging was really getting to me... To be honest, it still didn't help as when I am pre-menstrual the only cure for me seems to be to keep my fats higher which stops me craving sugary carbs...

So I've come off mine and am going to go back and see if they can prescribe a contraceptive pill that may help instead...

This is why that side effect is listed.  Its not an actual mechanistic side-effect of the drug, more a psychological one.

I was on prozac for years, and it did not alter my eating patterns to any noticable degree personally.  Although when I would get depressed I would binge/eat.  When I was really happy on the rare occasion I wouldn't care about physique as much and I would binge/eat.  Spot the flaw in my life?! LOL.

Prozac you really need to be on for 4-6 weeks minimum before you may see an effect.  Be careful in the first few weeks as can sometimes in some cases increase depressive thoughts initially (and absurdly)!  Minimum time on would be 6 months before you should come off if you decide you wouldn't want to be on it, unless it very badly affects you then you may want to come off sooner.

Bear in mind though, if you do come off do it under the advice of a Dr and taper the dose down.  Don't do what I did the first time I decided to come off and just not get any more prescriptions, come off cold turkey and a few days later feel like death and then pass out whilst using the toilet and banging your head on the sink, waking up 10 mins later on the floor with your trousers below your ankles....

Hey bernie, sorry for the late reply. been away.
The prozac did absolutely nothing for me, just made me tired and emotional. But one thing ive found is that everyone responds to these things differently so until u try for yourself you dont really know what the outcome is going to be. You ask though because you want someone to tell you the best course of action but im afraid its down to finding out how your body responds yourself. 6 months ago my doc prescribed citalopram, and it has worked fantastic for me, i have only make myself sick a few times in 6 months which is the longest i'be gone without doing it for 5 yrs, it is very mild and there arent alot of side effects......although everyone is different :)

the only thing i can say for definite is DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL whilst on any antidepressants, and that i do talk from experience, bad experience hahahahaha
other than this i dont think supplements for training effects it (dont take st johns wort though as its not recommended)

hope this is helpful if not a little long winded xxxx

Right - I came off Prozac, was sleeping for 3hours in the daytime everyday then unable to speak for an hour after waking it made me sooooo out of it!

Since then I've been put on a progesterone only contraceptive pill and now I only get 1 teary day a month (PHEW!) I'm on Cilest.

My local GP friend ;-) recommended Citalopraem, I just never got given it :-(
