FAO UdosChoice/R33454/Nigeepoo/etc (RE spreads) - 15 September 2009 18:36
What are the views on the new generation of 'healthy' spreads?

Are they pure evil like margarine, or are they more acceptable?

I use pure butter myself, but everyone else I know uses low-fat spreads.

Are they filth or are they generally accepted now?

Getting better, but still far from ideal.

Butter is still a better choice, get essential fats elsewhere in diet

James

What sort of spreads do you mean by 'healthy spreads'?

The commonplace supermarket spreads, Utterly Butterly, Flora, Benecol, etc.  Vegetable oil based spreads, most claiming to be 'cholesterol reducing' etc.

No matter how much I push the 'butter is better' arguement onto my family, they insist it 'makes you fat'.

I prefer the taste of butter but my mrs preferes the 'spreadability' of marg like bertolli.... my compromise so far is anchor spreadable (anchor being my butter of choice). TBH tho, I only have a bit spread on a couple of rhyvita and that's about my lot

yes,,, but i often get away with it, but it is soooooooooooooooooooooooooo worth it.....in hindsight it is not very good for me, but as i eat mostly healthy foods    (cough cough) i allow myself these small pleasures....

lol - buy a butter dish, and leave you butter on the side - always spreadable that way

LOL at manuka and scruffy's domestic!

1MR - it really depends on what you want from your spread and whole diet.  A good quality natural butter is ok if the remainder of your diet has it's sat fats controlled.  Sometimes practicality has to come in; I want something spreadable from the fridge, so I use Bertoli.  Bertoli use olive oil and rapeseed oil as their sources with minimal trans fats.

Benacol and other 'cholesterol lowering spreads' have their place, but only in those with familial hypercholesterolaemia (genetically raised cholesterol), and then doctors probably put you on medication.  So, I'm not a huge fan of these; I'd prefer other diet manipulation.

LDL-reducing margarines won't reduce your risk factor for CHD if they increase ox-LDL (due to very high w-6 content).
