gripping barbell when lifting heavy
-
21 October 2009 18:54
Really starting to get annoyed now Have gloves and they are shi'te , hate wearing them aswell as i prefer the feel of my hands on th ebar. Basically having trouble gripping th ebar , even though the weight is no problem too lift...single lifts are fine , its when i start doing reps at a weight , when the problems start. Anything iver 100kg and the grip starts slipping at around the 4th rep whats my best solution for grip?

Chalk, train your grip and time. Add in judicial use of straps too.

Straps- grip is always going to give before the back is exhausted otherwise

wolves1 Straps- grip is always going to give before the back is exhausted otherwise It won't if you a) have a well trained grip, and b) use appropriate grip and chalk. Still nothing wrong with straps if need be. I've never missed a deadlift due to a grip issue in a very long time. Mind you a set of 10 is CV but there you go.

jack5r Or if you like pain, thumb hook grip. :) Ouch! I did 150kg single handed for 5 reps not long back and made my thumb nail bleed, almost ripped it off!

You've got to work slowly into a hook grip. Take a long term to toughen up the area, and I hear that it's not worth going much over tripples

If you've never tried chalk then that's definately your main starting point, that will make a difference. I used to but haven't specifically trained grip for a few years now and can still comfortably hold on to my max DL weight double over hand (never used mixed as I don't get on with it, or my back doesn't). I often use a semi-hiooked grip. My index finger crosses over my thumb but not my middle finger, that really fcuking hurts.

I found that my grip got stronger by only using the straps at the point of failure. When I was using straps all the time my grip strength was really bad. Just to add I never use gloves anymore.

just t i just wear straps for reps. I would disagree with straps. My grip strength improved due to handling heavy dumbbells as well as from chinning/pullups. Through in some grip work at the end of the session to improve your grip strength.
