Who is the better fighter - floyd mayweather jr vs sugar ray leonard - educated discussion

Well guys, two great fighters but who was the best? Who had the better skills?

If they met today, could sugar ray beat mayweather?

Impossible to call IMO ..... but Mayweather's got tiny cahoonas compared to Sugar Ray.

Mayweather has his tricky defence, but other than that I'd give Sugar Ray the edge in every department

TBH I think SRL would take Mayweather apart

As an attacking force, Sugar Ray at his best, was in a different league to Mayweather. Mayweather at his best could only have beaten Sugar Ray at his very worst in my opinion.

Mayweather is the stronger, sugar ray is the classier, suagr ray is busier where mayweather is lazier.

Mayweather has a greater defence, sugar ray I doubt could deal with it.

Mayweather would win an ugly fight.

Leonard beat Benitez, Duran, Hearns and Hagler.

He ducked no one and fought the best that boxing could offer at the time.

Mayweather while ultra class and i believe the best fighter on the planet today, i just do not feel he has achieved as much as Leonard.

I do not think May would have beat Benitez, Hearns, Hagler and Duran.

Leonard was also the better as an amateur.

Totally agree with Kinglean, although I thought Hagler was very unlucky against Sugar ray...but that's another story!

Sugar Ray imo was far more impressive to watch and again imo would beat Mayweather

They both definetly have some for and against points, but given Maywesther's lacklustre performance on dancing with the stars I have to give the edge to Leonard as ive heard he does a mean foxtrot.

Depends on the weight. People are quick to forget that Mayweather was an outstanding Super Featherweight and Lightweight where he spent most of his career.
Would never write off anyone with the defensive savvy of Mayweather.

Hearns was HUGE at welter. Over 6 feet tall and with a devastating dig.

Yes Hearns by big KO. Just a matter of time for Hearns lands the bomb IMO.

I suppose a better question would be prime Roberto Duran at lightweight vs prime Floyd Mayweather Jnr at lightweight. Both the same height (give or take a smidge) and same weight.

I would add mosley to the mix at lightweight. Difficult to choose between the three.

I believe Whitaker in his prime could have beat leonard, he certainly had power behind his punches and a defensive skills to match.

Whitaker vs mayweather is close to call as well, but I think mayweather would get brutally ko'd. Until mayweather proves himself by fighting mosley, cotto, clottey, pacquiao etc I am not sure i can back him up.

Whitaker was not known for his power at Welter, remember he started at lightweight.

May vs Whitaker for me goes to the cards every time, given their respective styles. (would probably be boring to watch TBH)
