Dairy Intolerance 01 November 2009 16:37 (permalink)
Has anybody had to deal with being totally allergic to all dairy products, including whey, casein, milk, eggs, yogurt ect and have gone on to educate themselves to remain on a high protein, muscle building diet?

I am trying to imagine my current diet with no protein shakes, skimmed milk, egg whites ect and it doesn't half limit the already small list of foods that is on the muscle building list.

I currently have anal mucus discharge (enjoy your tea!), which I have been advised is probably due to a food allergy so I may have to avoid those foods, no more shakes or egg whites!!

Shouldn't spell disaster should it?

Please mull over the following points:

    1) Intolerance and allergy are two different things with different causes.
    2) Eggs though from the 'dairy' section aren't dairy - if you were allergic to cows milk protein you wouldn't normally have an issue with eggs, if you were lactose intolerant eggs would not be an issue.
    3) Before cutting foods from your diet you need a definitive diagnosis - preferably from an NHS allergy clinic or similar/specialist.

Cheers guys, I have made an appointment with a specialist and am currently doing the elimination process with eggs and skimmed milk, although i am still consuming shakes.

It has alleviated the symptoms a little only after 5 days with no egg whites or skimmed milk about 40% better.
I'm  also going to have a colonoscopy and see a dermatologist as I had developed a few weeks prior to the mucus problems and still have dark rashes around the ankles.

I shall no doubt over the next few months find out what not to eat!

Personally I would wait and see what the specialist says for a confirmed diagnosis

however, if you are eliminating a food then  you need to know what names it goes by - and that is a bit of google work for you (I havent got a definitive list - must make one!)

I am guessing it lactose - which if its severe means you need to look at the content of medications, and other products - also with severe lactose you need to avoid food products with whey - because the whey found in cheese, chocolate is not the high protein isolate in tubs but often 25% protein with a high lactose content.

And again with protein isolate you would be looking closely at the certificate of it to see that it had a very low lactose content - or maybe even switch to soy.

Thanks for the advice Les. Will let the professionals give me the diagnosis and have to deal with whatever the outcome is, if it means cutting out a lot foods then so be it.
