a very old method was to soak em in brine.
there was a world champ boxer who did it.
i could be wrong, but i think it was jack dempsey.
there is a downside to it,(nothing life threatening) but for the life of me i cannot remember what it was!
    hope that helps.

I used padded gloves now and they do help quite a lot, but lots of people dont like gloves, just dont rip my hands up nearly as much if i wear them so ill stick with them, worth a try tho maybe

keep going til you have some decent callusses, then soak them in hot water, dry, and file them down. sorted.

              http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/tm.aspx?m=3651886

since then i have started using chalk, and it has made a huge difference.

If your not using it then chalk will def help.

I know a guy that deadlifts most days and heavy often. He uses very thin glooves for a very good reason (he still chalks then up). If I wad to wear glooves I'd use thin gardening gloves. Weight training glooves are generall not fit for purpose.

If your only deadlifting once a week I am sure you'll just toughen up. I keep some athletic tape in my bag normally in case a callus gose. Worst in the heat as the sweat softens them up and makes em more prone to going.

trouble is, he asked about hardening his hands, not how to protect them.

Also gripping the bar properly will help.

Don;t grip with you palm, grip with the fingers, this means you won;t have a little flap of palm skin dragged and squashed down towards your fingers and the callus formed ripping off.

Put the bar in the dip between palm and fingers not higher up on the palm. The grip should be just as strong.

                          yeah im nailing chalk cheers.

Ive heard about white spirit thinking about it, though for feet, might look into that.

I really dont want to use gloves, it isnt my grip going, just that when i finish a set the bar has cheese gratered them to death haha.

Could be worse, the lad i train with has a weird gri, and he has alluses that are MASSIVE and look awfull halfway down his fingers!

Keeping your calluses under control helps too, i bite mine (horrible habit) but keeping them smallish stops them ripping.

The best thing to do is to carry on. If you use a good quality bar, that will speed the process. Your hands will get used to it. I have approximately nine callouses on each hand, all caused by deadlifting. They look unsightly but give no trouble and need no attention. Once you have them you will have no further problems.

You just have to let your skin harden and get used to it. If you get massive callouses file them down so they dont rip off.

In a happy or a homosexual way?

Seriously though, is there any call for comments like that?
I'd expect that from a 12yr old schoolboy who doesn't know better.

When I ditched the gloves, my hands too were left either bleeding or at best very sore.

Over time your hands harden and it doesnt hurt at all.

Make sure your hands are nice and warm, the colder your hands the more it will hurt.  Even now if my hands are cold its not comfortable deadlifting.

Progress from gloves to no gloves gradually, do a few sets without and as the weeks progress do more and more non-glove work.

I also used to deadlift with paper towels on the bar, it helped take the edge off.
