Slower digestion as you age?
04 November 2009 18:12

As I get older I'm noticing that I have to leave a lot longer between eating a meal and then exercising. No longer can I eat a big meal then go and kick a football round the park, unless I leave a gap of at least 3 hours my energy levels really suffer during exercise. Is this due to taking longer to digest food and, if so, why does it take longer?

The 'energy levels' issue could be for a number of reasons, insulin metabolism, digestion and diverted blood flow etc. As you age a number of things happen to you gut, gut health, motility and appetite but usually become a bigger factor in your 60's onwards. There's a number of factors involved. I can't tell really from your post what is happening in your case though! My advice would be to include plenty of fibre, some pre biotics, good quality yogurt etc and try and keep your gut at healthy as possible.
