*** Members' Interview with Dick Dastardly *** - 12 November 2009 14:24
Pro-member Dick Dastardly is this weeks interviewee.

The usual things apply: please use this topic to ask him any questions about  lifestyle, training, diet and progress, or anything else.  Please, nothing too personal or invasive. Please bear with him and give him time to reply.

Mr. Dastardly, thanks for agreeing to take part in this interview.

1) Can you give us a brief rundown of how you got into working out and how long you've been training?

2) What are your short-term and long-term training goals?

3) What are the pros and cons of living in Dubai?

4) If you could choose anyone to train with, who would you choose?

Thanks!!

Nice choice!

1) Is there any difference in training (atmosphere, types of training etc, gyms) in Dubai and the UK?

2) post up some pics of that car and make me jealous!

Hi guys and gals, this interview will give me something to do seeing as i can't train at the moment. Fell over at work today and now have 6 stiches on my elbow, doc says not to train for at least ten days so as you can imagine i'm no a happy bunny!

1) Can you give us a brief rundown of how you got into working out and how long you've been training?

I guess I got into training by two streams, firstly being in the military environment there is alot of ephisis on physical fitness and core strength. Secondly my older brother is an avid weight trainer and seeing the results he got made me think about starting to train more.

I've been training for about 5 years  however i'd say only real training for around 3 as i had no idea about diet and nutrition until i found MT

2) What are your short-term and long-term training goals?

Short term goals are to cut away some of the fat from my cycle and get ready for the next bulk.

In the long term i'd like to be about 90kg with 10-15% bf with a 300kg+ deadlift.

3) What are the pros and cons of living in Dubai?

I love living in Dubai, the weather is fantastic (obviously) and the standard of living is much higher than in the UK and of course its tax free!!

Bad things, it can take alot of time to get stuff done when dealing with government agencies. If you try and order anything off a menu with a slight alteration the world comes to an end. I'm sat here trying to think of more negative points but i'm finding it hard, hmmmmm its too hot in the summer.

4) If you could choose anyone to train with, who would you choose?

Right now i'd have to say Tony or IB, both have been quite inspirational for me over the last year and have made me face a conundrum on which bodyshape i really want.

Thanks!!

John.

Have to say the gyms are alot busier here, obvisouly with the climate people tend to want to stay in shape more. However that means alot more posers and bicep boys. I to my knowledge am the only person that does heavy deads in the FF i use and very few people squat, its all about the isolations in FF lol. There are some good gyms i've heard about and one i've visited but they are a good drive away and with rush hr traffic its just a no no.

Always like an excuse to post a pic of the car up lol

What exactly do you do in Dubai?

Do you get homesick?

Do you have many Briitsh mates in Dubai?

How much does it cost to fill your tank in that Mean Machine in Dubai?

I'm part of an initiative to teach the local Emarati teenagers military skills in the latter years of their schooling. Teach them foot drill, fieldcraft and m16 training.

Don't tend to get homesick mate being ex mil, haven't been in the UK since last Dec and doubt i'll go back till Feb or summer next year.

Millions of expats out here mate and lots and lots are British. Most of my mates are Brits or Aussies but there's people from all over the world, its one of great things about living here.

The worst thing about that car photo is you manage to add in further 'insult to injury' from the scenary.

Too busy hating you right now to ask a question.

Have you solved the problem of chalk in your gym yet?

Say for instance you lived in the UK and a bird who lived in Dubai asked you to move out there and she'd pay for you what would you do?

Circumstances are : You have your own business here and a shared property portfolio, you live a pretty acceptable life but nothing extravagant, you have zero qualifications after gcse and no trade or actual job that you could say you specialise in.....
She picks up nearly 8k a month.

Tough one that mate as it would depend on how i felt about the girl. I woudn't like to be paid for either tbh, if i could have a revenue stream coming from the property that would enable me not to work and if the business could run itself for a month or two then i would do that. Come out for a couple of months see what you think of the place, see how you feel about her and also put feelers out for job prospects.

Alot of people come out here for say 2-3 week "holidays" and stay at a friends and while her try to see what the job market would be like for them, i know  a few people that have ended up staying.

Already made the choice to stay here mate. This was a while ago.
I just wondered what the opinion of someone who was already out there would say. I couldnt handle the thought of not being self sufficient and having no work. The hassle involved in leaving here would mean closing my business so its a one trick pony aswell. If it didnt work id be royally fooked!

Not really mate no, vast majority of the time your living in this expat bubble where its just like living in a western country. Only time that really changes is Ramadan as all the clubs are shut for a month, however this just means crazy house parties at the rich boys houses on the palm.

Oh i guess one thing is you can't really show much affection when your out with a girl, in theory your not ment to hold hands if your not married and if your kissing a girl in a bar or club or the ol bump and grind dancing is getting over the top the bouncers will tell you to calm it down.

The biggest problem arises if you accidentally end up outside the bubble i mentioned earlier, usually by getting into trouble with the Police. Then you know your not in Kansas anymore, heard some shocking stories of people being locked up for days before being told what they were officially arrested for stuff like that.

Good choice

Where abouts in the Mansfield area are you from?

Whats it like over there for supplements (protein/creatine) etc? Are they good quality?

DrgHulk- Used to live in Forest Town mate and when i'm back its near the big tesco's where Mansfield leisure center used to be.

The supplements out here are ok but there is little choice and its pretty expensive. There are very few supplement shops and most tend to be in pharmacies (spelling).

I've often toyed with the idea of starting an online supps company for Dubai but don't really have any idea how to go about doing it and don't really have the start up capital.

Thats about 10 mins from me mate.

I think if there is a lack of cheap quality supps there an online store could be a very good earner mate. I don't think setting up your own website would be that much of a task. As for the start up money start with a small budget and if you get sales then invest the money you make straight back into your site.

There where two shops I found when there.  Both very expensive for sure.

A small on-line operation would do well.  If you covered the whole gulf you'd get trade from the yank bases as well.

Where do you train?  I used The Big Apple mostly, assuming it's still there.

I train at a FF at a place called IBN Battuta Mall mate, its 5 mins drive from my apartment and the facilities are good as long as i train in the late afternoon. If i get in there gone half 5 then its a pain as it get very very busy always waiting for kit or even xtrainers and treadmills if doing cardio.

I'm hoping for a play off place mate although i don't think we'll go up and tbh i think we could do with another season in the Championship to build up a squad that would have a chance of surviving in the Premiership.

I'm pasty because i work here i'm not on holiday lol. I can't remember the last time i sunbathed must have been a few months ago, haven't been to the beach since about April. I do need to get a tan though i admit.

I'm not natural mate, just finished my first test-e cycle on PCT at the moment so obviously i have no problems with gear apart from when it is used by idiots that have no idea what they are injecting into themselves.

Cardifflad- Playoff place for both i think mate, top two spots out of reach for us this season. I think Cardiff should easily get in to the playoff's whereas Forest will struggle and maybe just nip in at the end of the season.
