is there a name for this fear I have - 13 November 2009 21:47
I have realised I have a phobia/fear. I thought it was ocd, but having thought about it I can be clearer about what it is.

I think I have a phobia of anything, no matter how small, going wrong...or anything unexpected happening.

Like I say I thought it was ocd.....double, triple, quadrouple checking everything, making meticulous plans if I ever have to be anywhere at any specific time....a fear of being even a minute late etc.

is there a name for it?
I wish I was more attractive like Dagless.

You have an anxiety disorder, which is what OCD is.

Anxiety is not OCD related as such....its can bt a symtom of OCD tho.

it's weird, most people would regard me as 'good in a crisis' and I would regard myself as so, but only when it is other people's, when it is mine, I'm not sure as nothing really ever goes wrong (sure I have jinxed that now) as I take such care for it not to go wrong

Yeah it sounds similar to something OCD related, i sometimes suffer from anxiety it can be really bad and it causes paranoia. Ive haven't been to bad lately.

Jango do you mind if i ask why you are scared of kissing? Its not bad for you.

Obsessions =  recurrent, intrusive thoughts (in yourself, eg fear you've left the door unlocked)

Compulsions = behaviours which aims to reduce anxiety from above but paradoxically increases it (eg, re-checking the door is locked a hundred times).

Don't mind you asking at all. I have no problem talking about it either, but I don't want to hijack Tucs' thread.

I have a great many mouth and throat related OCD disorders. Kissing however is just plain nasty mate. How anyone can get pleasure from letting someone spit in their mouths is beyond me.

hah, it's like you've been spying on me

going out of the house of to bed can turn into a right palava (sp?) for me, checking everything is off and secure, if I am feeling generally anxious for any reason it is much worse, sometimes it is ok, sometimes I have made improvments by exposing myself to my fears (ie. only allowing myself to check the back door once etc.) but then if something happens I go back to square one quickly

my gf is so casual as well, leving lights on overnight, candles burning, gas cooker dials barely turned off etc. and that makes me worse

Same here really, I think it's a sort of ocd?
I check everything before I leave my room...then check again...then down the stairs and sometimes I have to check again.  I have a problem with clocks as well as in timing everything. It's stressful.

Surely you wouldn't turn her down?

I use to have the same problem Tuc and understand what you're experiencing. I have always considered it just a bit of anxiety and OCD. The things I needed to check was making sure all main electric items were off, all appliances that will not be used often turned off at the socket, turning all lights off, checking the cooker and gas is off and also making sure all doors are locked. If I didn't do this I would feel incomplete and needed to do it to have peace of mind.

Eventually, over the past couple of years I have looked at what I did from a wider picture and tried to rationalise with myself what I was doing and why. To cut a long story short, nowadays before I go to bed I still check the lights, doors and gas/cooker once but it's alot more relaxed and normal instead obsessively checking everything.

The standard diagnostic test for OCD is the YBOCS, you can self-administer it, theres an online version here:

YBOCS

Try reading Brain Lock by Jeffrey Schawrtz (not sure of the spelling of the name).

Excellent book (by a Dr that is also an OCD sufferer), explains what goes on with OCD and gives a very straightforward 4 step programme (using cognitive-behavioural, relaxation and meditiation/awareness techniques) for dealing with it that can be used on a self-help basis

Re:is there a name for this fear I have - 14 November 2009 06:22
cheers for the replies everyone, I will do that test and have a look at that book tac

I was doing some reading about it on the net last night and it seems I have a classic checking compulsion, I have all the testbook things like checking oven is off, door and windows are shut etc.

One place, and I really agreed, said that it is down to not wanting anything bad to happen to other people or your property that is your fault and it is an exaggerated sense of responsibility, and that if you are staying at someone else's house you don't have to check anything as it is not your responsibilty. I really agreed with that and found it true.

Last night I did pretty well, normally at night my little routine of checking probably takes about 10-15 minutes, I cut it down to about 2-3 minutes last night, ie. checking the taps were off once and not 8, 16, 32, 64 times etc.

it's funny when you know something is unreasonable behaviour, but you still do it
I wish I was more attractive like Dagless.

OCD *is* an anxiety disorder, so it would stand to reason if you have OCD you'll experience high levels of anxiety

I totally understand you being one way with anyone other than yourself and yet completely different at other times.

This is absolutely how i am. Pushing myself outside of my comfot zone is almost impossibly hard. Not impossible, as i've recently done some things that were more than a little outside my comfort zone but worth the while Possibly more on those later!
Awesome pic, but Tony you're not doing yourself many favours posting up tips on preventing the gag reflex and then a picture of a guy touching his toes - Ak

Kissing is simply a sign of relaxed oral hygiene in my opinion. People just get caught up in the moment and don't think about all that saliva and food that they're consuming from someone elses' mouth. However, I cannot help but think that rimming indicates some form of mental illness.

I'm not a mental health professional so I may be wrong on that one. It's just my own opinion.

I have recently heard about something called velching. I sincerely hope it's an urban myth. If human beings actually get pleasure from such activities then I am truly lost for words. To even consider engaging in this repugnant pursuit, one must not only be mentally ill, but also under the influence of veterinary strength medication.
