Drab, or other clued up dog people
-
14 November 2009 16:58
My dad has just bought an Alsatian pup, lovely dog. This got us talking about the various different looking Alsatians...some have long, thick hair and are much bigger than others. Are there various types? or is it just the dog's genetics? Also, I am right in thinking 'Alsatian' and 'German Shepherd' are one and the same?

we've got 2 german shepards, a 6 year old and 13 months and they're both long haired. You get two types - long haired and short haired. The long haired dogs generally appear to be bigger but thats mainly because of their fur. and yes alsation and german shepard are the same breed. My favourite breed of dog had them all my life, so loyal and affectionate.

As above mate There are basically two types of GSD, the long and short hair varieties, though in actuality if taking your dog to show they will all be judged together as one breed with no exact standard for length of hair Almost any length of hair is technically acceptable on a GSD in Europe, but the shorter hair is favoured. In the US long hair is a fault and you won't really be able to show a long haired GSD in the big shows As far as I know, the original GSDs of the early 1900s were all short haired, but the long hair gene was always present (it wasn't the result of deliberate cross breeding). The long haired gene is recessive I think which is why you tend to see more of the short haired variety aside from in lines which have been specifically bred for their long hair

It's weird drab about the long hair gene being recessive. We had the father of the 6 year old aswell and the bitch he mated with was short haired yet all her puppies were long haired. LOL at neb, I knew as soon as I posted that my death would be involved in your reply.

The only Marathon I would expect you to be able to finish would be an old style Snickers (this is reverse psychology motivational tactics by the way)

The scenery is inspiring, seems to be a great run. 26.2 miles with some serious inclines aswell. All the best mate for that looks an awesome thing to do. The weather could potentially be a major factor in the difficutly especially at that time of year.

Interesting mate, there must be more to it than just one gene then I guess You'd expect at least half of the pups to be short haired if it was just a matter of dominant vs recessive Xx xx Xx Xx xx xx Those are not kisses in case anyone else was wondering lol

The dominant gene basically over-rules the recessive gene mate So the X's I put above are a simple example of how dominant and recessive genes work. The Xx and xx at the top represent the genes of the parents, and the X's underneath the genes of the pups X is the dominant gene, in this case short hair x is the recessive gene, in this case long hair If you have any of the dominant genes then you have short hair. XX or Xx will give you short hair as X over-rules x But you need both recessive genes to have long hair, xx So you can see that even if one of the parents has just one dominant short hair gene, you would expect half of the pups to have short hair. In a different case where the father was double dominant then you'd expect all of the pups to have short hair, even if the mother was long haired All this is assuming that hair length is controlled by one gene which is unlikely anyway given what Jackson said! There will be much better and more indepth explanations online if you're interested mate, but those are the basics
