Drab, or other clued up dog people 14 November 2009 16:58 (permalink)
My dad has just bought an Alsatian pup, lovely dog. This got us talking about the various different looking Alsatians...some have long, thick hair and are much bigger than others.

Are there various types? or is it just the dog's genetics?

Also, I am right in thinking 'Alsatian' and 'German Shepherd' are one and the same?

we've got 2 german shepards, a 6 year old and 13 months and they're both long haired.

You get two types - long haired and short haired. The long haired dogs generally appear to be bigger but thats mainly because of their fur.

and yes alsation and german shepard are the same breed.

My favourite breed of dog had them all my life, so loyal and affectionate.

        As above mate

There are basically two types of GSD, the long and short hair varieties, though in actuality if taking your dog to show they will all be judged together as one breed with no exact standard for length of hair

Almost any length of hair is technically acceptable on a GSD in Europe, but the shorter hair is favoured. In the US long hair is a fault and you won't really be able to show a long haired GSD in the big shows

As far as I know, the original GSDs of the early 1900s were all short haired, but the long hair gene was always present (it wasn't the result of deliberate cross breeding). The long haired gene is recessive I think which is why you tend to see more of the short haired variety aside from in lines which have been specifically bred for their long hair

It's weird drab about the long hair gene being recessive. We had the father of the 6 year old aswell and the bitch he mated with was short haired yet all her puppies were long haired.

The only Marathon I would expect you to be able to finish would be an old style Snickers (this is reverse psychology motivational tactics by the way)

Please Please Please stop referring to GSD's as Alsatians, that name was dropped some 32years ago! after we as a country stopped being so pathetic

a lot of true German bred dogs are what is referred to as Sable

26.2 miles with some serious inclines aswell. All the best mate for that looks an awesome thing to do. The weather could potentially be a major factor in the difficutly especially at that time of year.

The scenery is inspiring, seems to be a great run.

26.2 miles with some serious inclines aswell. All the best mate for that looks an awesome thing to do. The weather could potentially be a major factor in the difficutly especially at that time of year.

The weather has been horrific mate over the past few years, serious winds and heavy, icey rain.

I hope the sun shines LOL
