Hatton v Marquez in talks..... - 17 November 2009 08:32

Oh dear.....

http://www.ringtv.com/blog/1322/marquez_hatton_in_talks/

Juan Manuel Marquez and Ricky Hatton have begun talks to fight in Manchester, England, promoter Richard Schaefer said.

No date has been discussed.

“That’s one of things we have to discuss,” Schaefer said. “I’m going to be talking to the Hattons. And Marquez wants to do it. We’ll see if we can get it done.”

Marquez is coming off a one-sided decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September, for which he went up two weight classes.

Hatton’s last fight was a one-punch, second-round knockout loss against Manny Pacquiao in May, after which the popular Briton hinted at retirement.

Marquez and Hatton would likely meet at 140 pounds.

X5, a natural super featherweight in Marquez will KO Hatton in 6 rounds. I honestly think Naz could come out of retirement, come down from 180lbs of flab to 140lbs and destroy Hatton. The guy has no defense or head movement, hitting Hatton is as easy as hitting a punch bag.

Doesnt anyone think that Hatton is putting himself in serious danger by carrying on though? He must have close to £50 million in the bank why continue

Is this the reason why so many people doubt him, or do people think he was overrated all along?

But do you accept that before the Mayweather fight he was (psychologically at least) a far more capable fighter than he is today?

I can't decide personally. I really rated him and I didn't stop rating him after the mayweather fight. It wasn't until he fought Lazcano/Malignaggi/Pacman that I started to see his limitations.

Perhaps those limitations were always there? Or perhaps the Mayweather fight damaged him psychologically to such an extent that he was never the same fighter he was previously?

Getting beaten is perfectly ok in my opinion. It's not being able to come back from defeat that I find hard to admire. Hatton never really came back.

Well, today he is pretty much done at world level so he was far more capable pre-Mayweather. Even then he was limited but the lack of quality in the 140 division let those limitations go unchecked. He never fought a genuine banger and when he did he was bumrushed inside 2 rounds.

This allowed the casual fan to massively overrate him up to the point of suggesting he would hammer Mayweather.

I would disagree with that, Hatton was a great fighter and only came unstuck against the pound for pound best in 47 fights.

Historical post war fighters who would have beaten a prime Hatton.

Pernell Whitaker
Ken Buchanan
Oscar De La Hoya
Hector Camacho
JC Chavez
Frankie Randall
Shane Mosley
Ike Quartey
Kostya Tszyu
Meldrick Taylor
Felix Trinidad
Buddy McGirt

and thats just off the top of my head, there will be plenty more.

Hatton was very good, but his iconic status was due to the british media, the fans and good matchmaking.

EDIT because i do not want to come across as a Hatton basher. I think he was a very good fighter indeed, but just not legendary.

Well Tszyu's in that list and he beat him in '05 but I agree with what you're saying. He's definitely not the best theres been but I still rate him as a fighter.

What he lacked in skill he made up in power and aggression but against the likes of Mayweather, Pacquiao etc just isn't enough.

What was disappointing about the Pacquiao fight was all the talk of the changes he'd made which never materialised.

Yes i know that, but you have to admit Tszyu was sliding when they met?

2001 / 2002 Tszyu different story.

Naturally he was always somewhat over-rated by British fans but the main point is that his chin seems to have gone which makes his style of fighting untenable. Hatton always fought with his face a bit which is why his peak was relatively short IMO

So I would say it's the fact that he's not the fighter he once was

The fact that Hatton was so popular in Britain tends to polarise some people against him to the extent that you have some people under-playing his talent whilst others over-play it!

The light welter devision is no easy weight IMO with Bradley and Alexander in the mix to name but two.

Its a big gamble for Hatton as Im sure most will agree, another bad loss and it could stink the place out bigtime.

Agree with odog,s last comments too.

Khan would be probably the best chance of success for Hatton IMO as he could KO him if he lands right and quickly IMO. Beyond 2 rounds and Khans got the advantages all round.

Dont do it Hatton, far more to lose than gain as far as the gamble goes!

i think khan wd be too quick for him now!!  hes got no head movement anymore just come plodding in.  wd be easy for khan to hit with his quick hands!!  saying that khan does have a v,weak jaw if he does manage to pin him to ropes he could be in trouble.  i just think khans knock out has done him world of good his defence is so much better now and he boxes lovely!!  instead of just 100% attack hes thinking about what hes doing and using some form of tactics which he never did in his earlier fights!!

i think hatton wd think he could blast khan easy so wdnt take it serious,  that wd be a mistake!

Interesting early betting odds on a Hatton Marquez matchup. Hatton 11/10 and Marquez 8/11.

I would guess that the Hatton fan base would soon reverse those odds.

Are you joking? Hatton couldnt beat marquez on points and hes got to the point, where I dont believe hatton has the speed/power to knock marquez out. Hes washed up and not because of pacquiao, mayweather jr finished hatton.

mayweather jr finished hatton.

Lifestyle finished Hatton.

You cant go 13st to 10st every time you fight and expect to have a long shelf life in boxing.

Fair play to you calling a Hatton win.

The only hope for Hatton is if JMM's age has hit him like a truck since the Mayweather fight.

It can be done, roberto duran did it his whole carrer.

Hatton was bloating up after everyone of his fights. He was at his peak when he fought mayweather and mayweather finished him.

So what are we putting Hattons capitulation down to then?

Had he been 26 or 27 i think he would have shook off the shot that Manny knocked him out with.

Tbh I dont think it would have mattered what age hatton was, with the speed manny threw the final punch, he didnt see it coming. Its the punches you dont see that do the damage.

In my opinion, hatton believed he was pound for pound best and when mayweather ko'ed him in vegas, it destroyed him.

I knew he was buggered after watching his entrance to the ring against manny pacquiao. He look terrified, blue moon didnt even come on until he was in the ring and was cut short. He was on edge and knew he was going to get K.Oed. I had a lot of respect for hatton until I heard an interview where he basically tried to blame mayweather snr for his loss against pacquiao.
