does sweating mean anything? - 17 November 2009 22:43
hi all, i know this may sound fairly strange but, i do 40 mins on exercise bike sun-fri, i stay between 80-95 rpm throughout on level 1 resistance, the thing is i sweat quite alot does that mean that im doing fine exercise-wise, i understand sweating does not equal fat loss but because im sweating alot does it mean im having a good work out?
also it seems fairly easy to do now, whats the benefit of putting the resistance up 1 notch, loool i tried it on level 3 the other day and could only do 10 mins cos my legs turned to jelly.
also 1 more thing if i were to put the resistance up 1 level, do i slow down on the rpm a little cos its gonna be tougher?
thanks everyone

It's not about sweat, it's about heart rate. Does your bike measure this?

Personally I would up the level by a notch. Yes you will pedal slower but the increased resistance will probably mean your heart rate is faster even at this slower rpm rate. Then see what distance you can cover in that 40 minutes. That will be your benchmark, and you can try to beat it each time. As this becomes too easy, you up the resistance level again and start over.

In my opinion, this is far better than pedalling like a maniac on a low resistance level.

Unless you are doing HIIT of course!!

Everyone is different when it comes to sweating!  I see it all the time in the gym, someone will be going hell for leather on some cardio kit and don't seem to break a sweat, while someone else will look like they're just have a casual stroll and be dripping in it.  I wouldn't let it worry you.

Like ian said your HR is more important. although when you sweat it is a good indication of how well your lymphatic system is running.

The more you sweat during exercise, generally the more efficient your lymph system (the system that eliminates toxins from the blood stream)

sweat is you body's natural way of cooling the body down. Some people suffer from a "condition" called hyperhidrosis, i personally suffered from this for a while it's nothing abnormal it's just the sweat glands producing more than needed to cool the body down.

As previously said, everyone is differant when it comes to sweating.
